MEDIN Northwestern University A Cross-cultural approach to moral psychology starts from researchers withholding judgments about universal right and wrong and instead exploring community members’ values and what they subjeCtively perCeive to be moral or immoral in their loCal Context. This study seeks to identify the moral ConCerns that are most relevant to listeners of hip- hop music. We use validated psyChologiCal surveys inCluding the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (Graham, Haidt, & Nosek 2009) to assess whiCh moral ConCerns are most central to hip-hop listeners. Results show that hip-hop listeners prioritize concerns of justiCe and authentiCity more than non-listeners and deprioritize ConCerns about respeCting authority. These results show that the ConCept of the “good person” within the hip-hop subculture is fundamentally a person that is oriented towards soCial justiCe, rebellion against the status quo, and a deep devotion to keeping it real. Results are followed by a disCussion of the role that youth subCultures have in soCializing young people to prioritize Certain virtues over others as they develop their moral identity. 1. Introduction Many AmeriCan rappers inCluding KendriCk Lamar (2010), Snoop Dogg (2015), and Busta Rhymes (2006) have delivered the following CatCh phrase in their lyriCs: “You Can take me out the hood, but you Can’t take the hood out of me.” They proClaim that there are Certain aspeCts of the “hood” lifestyle and value system that, onCe they are part of you, direCt how you perCeive the world and behave in it.

There has been experimental use of turntables as musical instruments since their invention, but the use is now mainly ascribed to the musical genre hip-hop and the playing style known as scratching. Scratching has developed to become a skillful instrument-playing practice with complex musical output performed by DJs. The impact on popular music culture has been significant, and for many, the DJ set-up of turntables and a mixer is now a natural instru- ment choice for undertaking a creative music activity. Six papers are included in this thesis, where the first three approach the acoustics and performance of scratching, and the second three approach scratch modeling and the DJ interface. Additional studies included here expand on the scope of the papers. For the acoustics and performance studies, DJs were recorded playing both demonstrations of standard performance techniques, and expressive perfor- mances on sensor-equipped instruments.

142ND ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT DECEMBER 15, 2018 CEREMONIAL MACE The ceremonial mace, a decorated staff carried in the commencement procession, is a symbol within a symbol. It denotes the right of the university administration to confer degrees on its graduates. The presence of a mace in ceremonial processions dates to the Middle Ages. The earliest maces were practical items, carried by sergeants-at-arms as part of the royal bodyguards’ means of protecting the king and as a symbol of his authority. In time, the mace was adapted to civic use and represented leadership. No longer a weapon, the mace became a work of art, decorated with precious metals and often bearing the seal of the city or university it represented. Universities began incorporating a mace into their ceremonies as early as the 15th century. In the United States, most universities continue the tradition and incorporate a ceremonial mace into commencement exercises. At SIU, the mace is very much a product of the university as well as representative of it. Professor Richard Smith, blacksmith and faculty member in the School of Art and Design, was commissioned to create a mace to debut in 2013. He turned to professor emeritus Richard Mawdsley, silversmith, to complete the project. He also enlisted the assistance of alumna Erin Dixon; assistant professor Sun Kyoung Kim; graduate student Patrick Quinn; and undergraduate students Timothy Schaeffer and Daniel Widolff – all from the School of Art and Design. The mace, constructed of Damascus steel and silver, is 42 inches tall and 1¼ inches wide at its widest point. Design elements incorporate architectural references to Old Main – a campus building when SIU was the brand-new Southern Illinois Normal University, a teachers college, in 1874.

The astonishing number of people I would like to acknowledge shows how numerous were the dark alleys and obstacles I had to transpose during this last year. Firstly, to my father and mother for outstanding support, not only through this work but for the two decades before. To my advisor and co-advisor, Prof. Jo~aoMadeiras Pereira and Prof. Alfredo Ferreira Jr., for strong belief on Mt-Djing from square one. Moreover I kindly acknowledge the contribution of my colleague Diogo Mariano, whom I thank for all the support given, endless brainstorming sessions and late work nights. A word of appreciation to Ricardo Jota and Bruno de Ara´ujo, for the interest and support to this work, shown in the form of the many conversations exchanged upon this subject. Other colleagues have their place within this thank-you note, namely Tiago Ribeiro and Guilherme Fernandes, for their help in reviewing and discussing the contents. And at last, but (definitely) not least, to all DJs and accompanying group, that took the time and effort to contribute so much to this work - that ultimately is theirs more than it is mine - specially: Pedro Farinha, Pedro Sousa (aka Alfredo Carajillo), Jo~aoGomes (aka Mush Von Namek), Igor Sousa and Nuno Moita.
