sat earain SUGGESTIONS FOR ENRICHING THE READINGPROGRAM
Uay Hill Arbuthnot in Childrenand Books says:
"Books are not substitutes forLiving but they can add immeasurably to its richness. When life is absorbing, books canenhance our sense of its significance. When life is difficult, they cangive us momentary release from troubles or a newinsight into our problems, orprovide the rest and refreshment we need.Books have always been a sourceof information, comfort and pleasure forpeople who know how to use them. This is true for children as foradults."
This bibliography of children'sbooks for various gradelevels has been prepared from the suggestedlists of the Ginn, BoughtonMifflin, Lippincott and Scott, Foresman reading series. It is hoped that this list will also be of great help toteachers who use reading series other than those named.
Most of the books, filmsand records suggested will befound in the Educational Media Center of the JointCounty System of Cedar,Johnson, Linn and Washington Counties. If the teacher as a user checksthe catalogues and library card filescarefully, she should be able tolocate most of these materials. The filmstrips suggested maybe in the local district curriculum library; ctherwise, the local district budget may need to provide for these materials.
Unless teachers make reading more thanjust a routine teacher- directed activity, children will notenjoy reading. It is the responsibility of educators of the!960's tc make reading aliveand important to children. nis can be done by manyactivities. Some of of the the most important are readingaloud to children and using many modern media suggested here. The importance of the teacher'sreading aloud to 311 of the children cannotbe overemphasized. Some time each day should be provided for thisactivity.
These lists have been rrovidedfor teachers of Area X. Bow they are used will depend onthe teacher's creativity andresourcefulness.
