Day 1 Thursday 1st October

We all arrived on time and with no problems at Lima. After a brief stop to drop bags and collect lunch from our hotel we were off to the south of Lima to get our first good . We stopped at Pucusana, a lovely fishing village, and whilst having lunch at the lookout we were rewarded with a group of playing Humboldt Penguins. Peruvian Diving Petrels were sitting and flying very close by, a definite bonus! Peruvian Boobies, Humboldt Penguin, the well dressed and gaudy Red legged Cormorant, and Inca Terns seen nesting at close range, were a plus.

Further on, a stop in the wetlands at Puerto Viejo yielded a different and well enjoyed set of birds including an aptly named pair of Many-colored Rush Tyrants which were tending a nest, an elegant pair of Great Grebes calling, Wren-like Rushbird nesting as well, and Chilean Flamingo. Yet another stop combined coastal desert scrub and rocky beaches, where we found another interesting array of birds such as Surf Cinclodes, Black Oystercatcher, Semipalmated Plover, Peruvian Thick-Knee, Puna Ibis, and a very unexpected Virginia Rail!

It was a good day to start our trip, with an upcoming and exhilarating set of special birds waiting for us in the following days. We had a welcome dinner and discussed our itinerary and then went early to bed as we were eager to start our next day.

Day 2 Friday 2nd October

We started enthusiastically on this Amazonian component of the journey. Once in Iquitos we were met with the staff of Muyuna Lodge, and were transported across this interesting city (previous rubber capital of the country). At the port of Bellavista we embarked on our vessel and accessed the mighty Amazon River via Nanay (a northern tributary). For the next 4hrs we birded from the boat and saw some of the typical Amazonian River- edge species, including Yellow headed and Black Caracara, Pied Lapwing, Large billed Tern, and Yellow billed Tern. Once in the Yanayacu creek we birded as we headed towards the lodge.

DAYS 3 - 5 Saturday 3rd - Monday 5th October

We had a good set of different habitats to explore at this time of the year given that the water level is low and therefore it is easier to access the varzea (seasonally flooded) forest, oxbow lakes, river islands, terra firme, swamps, etc. On our first morning we looked for the very scarce and mythical Wattled Currasow, which we were lucky to see rushing through the canopy 30 or so meters up, a bit odd to see a Currasow so high in the tree tops!

Northern Peru Tour Report

We had very good weather and saw a good array of Amazonian birds including Chestnut-eared Aracari, Black- fronted Nunbird, Hoatzin, Cocoi Heron, many colourful tanagers, Red-bellied and Blue-and-yellow Macaws, Black-collared and Slate-colored Hawks, Amazonian Violaceous Trogon, Scarlet-crowned and Lemon-throated Barbets, many flycatchers, Golden-green Woodpecker, Long-billed Woodcreeper, Barred Antshrike, and Amazonian Streak Antwren, amongst many others. On the morning of our last day in the Yanayacu, we were wisely directed towards the confluence with the amazon, where after having set up our picnic breakfast we could all enjoy Pink River Dolphins swimming by!

After our return to Iquitos we got installed in our hotel and soon after decided to walk along the “malecón” for our last minutes of sunset and we added Short-billed Elaenia and Common Nighthawk to the list.

Day 6 Tuesday 6th October

Today we had the regular early start to be picked up by our local guide and driver, and had a full day to explore one of the most fascinating of Amazonian habitats, the enigmatic “white sand forest”. At Allpahuayo Mishana reserve we had a good start with large flocks of White-winged Parakeets by the gate, and once on foot we found a pair of Golden-collared Toucanet and Gilded Barbets sharing a fruiting Cecropia tree. Although diversity is great here, it is quality that really counted today. Very poor soils make densities particularly low so every find makes for great comfort…our specials included Ancient Antwren, Brown-banded Puffbird, Pompadour Cotinga, Orange-crested Manakin, Saffron-crested Tyrant-Manakin, and the aptly named Paradise Jacamar.

At the end of the day we had time to refresh in the hotel and soon after we reached the airport for our short domestic flight to our next destination, Tarapoto.

Day 7 Wednesday 7th October

Today we first visited Juan Guerra, and in the mid morning Upaquiua. At these sites we encounter a very peculiar type of Amazonian forest, under the influence of the Huallaga drainage, a rather unique dry sort of forest. With little effort we found the Huallaga race of Western Slaty Antshrike (Huallaga Antshrike), and Bluish- fronted Jacamar behaved obligingly as predicted here. Further on we made a quick and unexpected stop for a trio of Peruvian (Marañon) Pigeons, ahead and along the quebrada we had good luck with Rufous-winged, Yellow-breasted and Stripe-chested Antwrens, and Sulphur-bellied Tyrant-Manakin and Mishana Tyrannulet posed very well, while yet further ahead we enjoyed a very jumpy Gray .

After lunch we checked out, and then headed for the Cerro La Escalera protected area. Although we had a windy afternoon we still got two important birds of this spectacular scenery site, Dotted Tanager (sunbathing!), and a flashy group of Brown-mandibled Aracari (a race of Ivory billed by some). At night time we checked in at Puerto Mirador in Moyobamba.

Day 8 Thursday 8th October

We started with pre-breakfast birding around the grounds of the lodge where we easily found a Pale-breasted Thrush (local in Peru, later found to be nesting!), Huallaga Tanager (also known as Black-bellied), and some others as Rufous-fronted Thornbird, Turquoise Tanager, and a race of Mouse-colored Tyrannulet.

Northern Peru Tour Report

As the day progressed we birded the nearby Quebrada Mishkiyaquillo where we were lucky to find some colourful tanagers at a grove of fruiting trees, among these Paradise, Green-and-gold, Bay-headed, Spotted, Yellow-bellied and Golden. We found ourselves enjoying lunch by the Aguas Verdes River, a mighty one in the foothills of the eastern Andes.

After we headed on, with several birding stops, finding White-capped Dipper, another impressive array of tanagers, the endemic Speckle-chested Piculet and interesting tyrannids like Ecuadorian Tyrannulet, Slaty-capped Flycatcher, and Sierran Elaenia, with a pair of loudly singing Black-mandibled Toucans. As we approached the famous Abra Patricia Pass we saw a pair of spectacular Torrent Ducks in the middle of an Andean rushing stream, and with that we finished the day and headed to our Lodge for the night.

Day 9 Friday 9th October

Although we had a morning of rain it today, very early on we came across one of our favourite birds of the trip, and enjoyed close-up views of the minute Ochre-fronted Antpitta (an endemic which is usually one of the hardest to see)! We also saw a mixed flock of tanagers and allies, with 14 species in that family alone!!! Our night birds here included a very nice White-throated Screech-Owl, a Band-winged Nightjar that flew over, and a distant singing Rufous-banded Owl and Cinnamon Screech-Owl.

Later we birded the area around Afluentes and found a lek of the fabulous Cock-of-the-Rock just by the roadside. By the pass we had many birds, amongst these were Drab Hemispingus, White-capped, Rufous-crested, Flame-faced, Orange-eared, Grass-green Tanagers, and a flycatcher assembly had the Spectacled and Marble- faced Bristle Tyrant, Golden-faced (Sn Martín) and Mottle-cheeked Tyrannulets. along the altitudinal gradient included Blue-tailed Emerald, Ecuadorian Piedtail, Green Hermit, the humble Royal Sunangel (this is no longer a Peruvian endemic, it is now known to be from southern Ecuador!), Collared Inca, Fawn- breasted Brilliant and the well dressed Long-tailed Sylph.

Day 10 Saturday 10th October

After several hours at a communal land chasing very hectic birds, we decided to go to an Interpretative Center of the Marvelous Spatuletail. Once on the site we were granted with the good news that a full adult male was showing sporadically around a patch of hummingbird feeders by a dry quebrada. After seeing Andean Emerald, Sparkling and Green Violetears, White-bellied Woodstar and a White-bellied Hummingbird, we soon were shocked by the beauty of the Marvelous Spatuletail, surely one of the most spectacular species of hummingbirds! After a little extra birding in Abra Patricia, yielding Sickle-winged Guan, Yellow-billed Cacique, Cloud-forest Brush-finch, Spectacled Whitestar, Gray-hooded Bush-Tanager, Lacrimose Mountain-Tanager, Green-and-black Fruiteater and Barred Becard, we went to our hotel nearby and checked in for the night.

Day 11 Sunday 11th October

This day was full of activity as we birded en route towards the very impressive archaeological sites on our program. The pre-incan Chachapoyans lived in the surroundings of the Utcubamba watershed and given that the valley is parallel to the Marañon River, a fairly good number of the middle Marañon endemics were on our scope for the day.

Northern Peru Tour Report

With a fairly numerous group of Peruvian (Marañon) Pigeon, several Marañon Streak Saltator, a cooperating pair of Marañon Wren, and a couple of Marañon Thrushes we had a great morning, and we also enjoyed more widespread species such as Scarlet-fronted Parakeets, Long-billed Starthroat, Long-tailed Tyrant, and Golden Olive Woodpecker.

Once we accessed the middle Utcubamba we started our accession to the Fortress of Kuelap, where we had a pair of Mountain Caracara very close. We enjoyed these extraordinary ruins (considered more surprising by archaeologists than the famous Machu Picchu!), and then in the late afternoon we headed down to the farm style accommodation we had for the night, El Chillo. Once we had finished the species list, and while still enjoying dessert, a Koepcke´s Screech Owl called, our attention re-focussed and we were soon admiring this very little known and highly range-restricted Peruvian endemic, before going to bed.

Day 12 Monday 12th October

A very early start was due in order to get clear of a section of the road that was in the process of reconstruction, and while we had enough light we made our first official birding stop to enjoy a Fasciated Tiger Heron. Further on we reached Bagua on time, and off we went to look for a very special bird, Little Inca Finch. After finding Pacific Parrotlets, Tawny-crowned Pygmy-Tyrant, Marañon Gnatcatchers (maior race of Tropical), Drab Seedeater, and Short-tailed Field-Tyrant, we finally had luck with one Little Inca Finch responding well to an imitation of a Glaucidium sp.

At Seminario we started well approaching a gaudy Pearl Kite in the premises of Jaén. Once in the site it was already quite hot but we still managed two good targets here; Marañon Slaty Antshrike (Western Slaty race) and Marañon Crescentchest. After lunch we decided to spend the afternoon in the conveniently located nearby Gotas de Agua, and at the site we discovered that the ranger had started what was probably the first Tinamou feeding station. Although we waited for a long time we didn´t succeed, but instead found local species of the region such as Purple-throated Euphonia, an ever-elusive Collared Antshrike, and Pacific Hornero, amongst others.

Day 13 Tuesday 13th October

We started early to Gotas de Agua and before the break of dawn we found that the local Anthony´s Nightjar which was singing all around us, and with little effort found several individuals flying over and landing on the side of the road. We saw them again up in the Tataupa Tinamou hide. Although they were very close, we could hear them beneath, but unfortunately this time they kept themselves shy. The rest of the morning we birded along a dirt track and found many birds including Sooty-crowned and Brown-crested Flycatchers, Marañon Gnatcatcher, Scarlet-backed Woodpecker, many Little Inca Finches, as well as the marañon race of Inca Jay, a cryptic Chinchipe Spinetail, and Lineated Woodpecker.

Back in the hotel we had a short swim in the refreshing pool, and after collecting our items we enjoyed our lunch overlooking the mighty Marañon River. Before approaching our next birding location we admired an unexpected Bare-faced Ground-Dove. Once in Porculla we decided to walk downhill and were provided with Bay-crowned and White-winged Brush-finches.

Northern Peru Tour Report

Lower down we succeeded in finding the endemic Piura Chat-Tyrant, together with Gray-and-gold and Three- banded Warblers, Black-cowled Saltator, and Amazilia Hummingbird. We reached Tucume, our destination for the night, and before starting our log we saw Burrowing Owl and Pacific Pygmy-Owl.

Day 14 Wednesday 14th October

We began our birding in the grounds of Tucume, birding the nice forest in the outskirts of the impressive pyramids, where we soon saw more of the tumbesian endemics such as Bairds Flycatcher, White-faced Gnatcatcher, Necklaced Spinetail, Tumbes Beardless Tyrannulet, and the very scarce Tumbes Swallow. We then headed to the Lord of Sipán Museum. Once in this impressive museum we learned about the Moche culture, another of the little known pre-Incan tribes of South America, and were extremely impressed by the high level of organization and the fine work in their offerings. We then departed to Chaparrí, where we had a good lunch and by the time we were finished we were called to see a confident Elegant Crescentchest.

After we had settled into our comfortable cabins we took a walk with our local guide to see more birds. This afternoon was a remarkable one to us all, as soon as we started our walk and were observing the critically endangered White-winged Guan, and a Spectacled Bear was found walking in the open in the other side of the creek!! Although we have been informed about the possibility of encountering a wild Bear, we were more impressed as within less than 5 minutes the bear appeared less than 50m ahead of us on the trail, and even closer when “she” decided to climb a fruiting tree in front us! We did well at night time too as well as within minutes of dusk we were securing West Peruvian Screech-Owl for the list.

Day 15 Thursday 15th October

The beginning of the day was quite remarkable for this time of the year, with a show of many Purple-collared Woodstars, a fast Short-tailed Woodstar, Several Amazilia, and Tumbes Hummingbirds, all enjoying bathing in the creek nearby. After breakfast we headed to the trails and had most of the regional endemics including Tumbes Sparrow, White-headed Brush Finch, a massive flock of some 200+ of the local Sulphur-throated Finch, Tumbes Tyrant, Red-masked Parakeet, White-tailed Jay, White-edge Oriole, Parrot-billed Seedeater, and Cinereous Finch. After a late lunch we relaxed and took photos by the dining area while waiting for the afternoon to cool down enough to go out birding. The time came and we were off on the tinamou quest, this time we succeeded with a very tame Andean Tinamou, and late afternoon granted us with a King Vulture. Although we had heard it in the daytime, we couldn't manage to attract a Striped Owl.

Day 16 Friday 16th October

Given our good results the previous day we decided to start the day with bathing hummingbirds, and while enjoying the show we were very impressed when our local guide found us a female Andean Condor preening and stretching while sunbathing at the break of dawn! We watched until this Andean Queen took flight and showed us her majestic aerodynamics on the wing. Our next stop was Tinajones, a very important reservoir, but before parking we saw a Savanna Hawk perched in the middle of the road! In the water a large group of Comb Ducks preened joyfully, with White-cheeked Pintails and Cinnamon Teals nearby. Many common water birds were around, Great Egret, Little Blue Heron (including an all-white one), Snowy Egret, and Common Moorhen, but what was really a surprise was two Andean Ibis that we soon had in the scope.

Northern Peru Tour Report

According to the local guide these have been absent for two years! Today we decided to have sea food for lunch, it turned out to be a feast, with several local dishes on display at our table, and we couldn't manage dessert - the first and only time this happened! We had the late afternoon to look for birds along the coast, and south of Chiclayo we found one of the most exciting of South American waders, the exhilarating Tawny-throated Dotterel was at a known site where we found 18 of them sharing its space with a band of Killdeers. Further along at the end of the afternoon we had Kelp Gulls, Many-coloured Rush-Tyrant, and Wilson's Phalarope. We then returned to Chiclayo to check-in in Hotel Grand Chiclayo, and later we went out for a farewell dinner to celebrate the success of our journey with another feast and some local drinks.

Day 17 Saturday 17th October

We left Chiclayo to get to Lima late morning (hoping not to have to deal with Lima traffic). In the end we did reached Lomas de Lachay and with limited time we ended up finding most of the specialties of the site, with Cactus Canastero found on its nest, a nearby Grayish Miner running the rocky hillsides, and an Oasis Hummingbird. We soon had to head back to be at the airport on time, which we managed with no delays.

Day 18 Sunday 18th October

Arrival back in London

Summary: All in all this was a superb trip, and we were very satisfied with our trip. Some had difficulty choosing a favourite bird, but amongst the most popular highlights, in no particular order, were: Ochre-fronted Antpitta, Peruvian Thicknee, Black Hawk-Eagle, White-winged Guan, Koepcke´s Screech Owl, Marvelous Spatuletail, Paradise Jacamar, Brown-banded Puffbird, Golden-collared Toucanet, Marañon Crescentchest, Inca Tern, Humbolt Penguin, Black-faced Ibis, Pacific Parrotlet, Inca Jay, Cock-of-the-Rock, Wire-tailed Manakin, Dotted Tanager and Fasciated Wren. We had excellent results, with 604 species of birds recorded! (22 additions to the previous list) - Congratulations to all participants!
