This station was around the corner from the Carousel, an establishment owned by one JACK RUBY. BeHe was introduced to RUBY by DICK MC GRUDER, who was a news writer at that time for station WFAA. He secured a membership card for the Carousel Club but did not pay any inititioninitlObn fees.fees. HeHe explainedexplained thatthat thisthis waswas because RUBY liked to surround himself with radio personalities.

He knew of no political connections of RUBY but advised that he read that RUBY could be convinced to assist either right or left wing extremists if this would make him a "big man."

RUBY is a close associate of LOUIS MACWILLY, a gambler in the Dallas area, who is reputed to have "syndicate connections." MACWILLY is also alleged to-have gambling interests in Cuba. RUBYRUBY waswas alsoalso aa closeclose friendfriend ofof thethe owner of the University Club in Dallas, whose name he cannot recall. He stated that this was in 1958 and the owner was a small- time gambler in the Dallas area.

Hecould not envision RUBY having any political notions one way or the other and knew of no connections with the Fair Play for Cuba Committee. He knew of no police connections with the Carousel .Club.Club and couldcould notnot recallrecall otherother associatesassociates or girlfriends ofof RUBY.

His impression of RUBY was that he was not exactly an emotionally stable person but constantly feltfelt inferior. RUBY demanded that his employees respond instantly toto any commands.

Mr. STROUD, based upon his past recollection, could not connect RUBENSTEIN with JACK RUBENSTEIN who has recently received nationwide publicity concerning the shooting of LEE HARVEY OSWALD. They were both from the same neighborhood in Chicago but were not acquaintances in that city. BOBROW resided with RUBY and his sister, EVA GRANT, for about ons year when theylived in an apartment located at 345 Jones Street,Stfeet, San7Francisco. This residence occurred approximately 1936. BOBROW worked with RUBY as a newspaper sub- scription salesman for the San Francisco "News" a daily newspaper. RUBY may have beenbeen employedemployed inin a similar . capacity by other San Francisco newspapers. They were part of a group of young men who came from Chicago to San Francisco at approximately the same time and did similar. work in San Francisco. His immediate circle of friends numbered about fifteen. At thethe timetime ofof his residenceresidence with RUBY at the aforementioned address RUBY'S sister,sister, EVA,EVA, hadhad a son named RONNIE, approximately five years of age, residing with them.

Re said that RUBY waswas a'wella'well-mannered,-mannered, 10eible 10eible individual who was soft-spoken and meticulous inin hishis dressdress and appearance. Re has never known RUBY to have engaged in any illegal activity, and RUBY never expressed an in-in- terest in any type of political activity, particularly anything of aa "radical nature.- BOBROW identified RUBY with the Dallas killingskillings as a result of reading news articles concerningconcerning thesethese in- cident. RUBY, BENNIE BARRISH and BILLY VEPRIN (phonetic) all came to San Francisco from Chicago together at the same time and all were in the newspaper circulation business. HeHe recalledrecalled RUBYRUBY was a circulation crew manager but he did not recall which San Francisco newspaper RUBY was affiliated with. In those days, there were four newspapers in San Francisco,"The Evening Call", "The News", "The Chronicle" and "The San Francisco Examiner" and a good circulation man, although working for one newspaper, could sell a subscription to another paper and still receive the commission. He was only a casual acquaintance of-RUBY and believes that he saw him around San Francisco until around 1936 or 1937. BILLY VEPRIN, he believed, went to Guam prior to World War II and became quite wealthy in the laundry business, returned to San Francisco and was a partner in Tommy's Joynt, a Hoffbrau Restaurant, in partnership with TOMMY HARRIS in San Francisco. This restaurant was sold subsequently to SAM GORDON, a former friend of RUBY fromfrom Chicago.Chicago. On November 27, 1963, Mr. REUBEN ARIAN, residence 3789 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, owner "Supply Sergeant", a surplus store at 1550 El Camino Real, Redwood City, California, advised SA WARRENT W. RICHMOND as follows:

Mr. ARIAN in the 1930's resided in San Francisco and worked as a circulation supervisor for the "San Francisco News He stated that in this capacity, one of the people that worked for him was EVA GRANT. He said that also working off and on for the "San Francisco News" during the Depression was a person he recalled as EVA's brother and known to him as "SPARKY""SPARK?" RUBENSTEIN. Mr. ARIAN stated that SPARKY, as he knew him, was then a good looking, well liked young man with a good personality who was able to earn two or three dollars a day by door-to-door sales of newspaper subscriptions. Mr. ARIAN advised that he was not particularly close to SPARKY at that time and knew EVA GRANT much better since she worked directly under him attempting to get newspaper subscriptions for the "San Francisco News". Mr. ARIAN statedstated thatthat RUBENSTEINRUBENSTEIN was was nicknamed nicknamed SPARKY SPAM becausebecause of his short temper, but none the less he was well liked and a - good. door-to-door salesman. Be said around May 15, 1963, when'ben he was manager of the Old French Opera House,Rouse, Bourbon Street, a night club with a strip show, JACK RUBY came by the club between 11:00 PMpm and 1:00 AM in the morning, carrying a small attache' type suitcase which was tied with wrapping twine. BeHe said be was out in front of the Old French Opera House at the time and when RUBY came by, hebe gave him a pitch to get him to come into the club and spend some money. RUBY, after a short conversation, told him he was in the Samedams business in Dallas and after some time, TANNENBAUM realized that RUBY was inin thisthis typetype business.business. VIOLA did not get a job at the Carousel so far as ROBINSON knows.

A few days later, he and "SLIM" ELMO MILLER stopped at the Ca ousel for a drink. On this occasion, RUBY greeted them at the door, but they had no other conversation with him. ROBINSON states he has no recol- lection of RUBY ever ever stating stating any political views or even discussing politics.politics. ROBINSON hedhed never heard of LEE HARVEY OSWALD prior to President KENNEDY'sKENNEBY's and does not recall ever having seen him. Pe further states he knows many of the officers of the Police Department in Dallas and has never seen any of them around the Carousel Club. He was of the impression RUBY knew many of the officers but does not know how RUBY met them or what their relation- ship was. Texas Department of Correctios Number 171455, was interviewed in the Warden's Offices ,Texas, State Prison, Texas Department of Corrections. He advised that he has been a resident ofof Dallas,Dallas, Texas, for many years. In about 1950, he frequented the "Silve'r Spur Club" in Dallas and beCame acquainted with the owner, JACK RUBY. In 1952, LINTHICUM received a prison sentence at the Federal Correctional Institute, Seagoville Texas, and was not released untiluntil April,April, 1954.1954. AfterAfter returningreturning to Dallas and while again frequenting the "Silver Spur Club", he witnessed JACK RUBY engage in a fight with three customers, and LINTHICUM wentwent toto RUBY'sRUBY's assistance.assistance. Be said most of the affairs of the club were handled by ARMSTRONG, who performed paper work, etc., and this individual was with RUBY for approximately nine years.

Continuing, he said that on a few occasions during the daytime, hehe wouldwould accompanyaccompany RUBYRUBY aroundaround the the Dallas Dallas area. area. He He . recalls one day, time unknown, that RUBY went to various companies in regards to the purchase of a safe for the club, as RUBY had the habit of carrying all his money in his pocket. On another•another. occasion, approximately three weeks ago, he wentwent withwith RUBYRUBYwhen when RUBY checked about some sound etuipment for the club. This was at an electronics company in about the 2200 or 2300 block •f Elm Street. They were there ten or fifteen minutes and did not purchase anything. On this occasion he, CRAFARD, was wearing a suit and he feels they were there at about 3:00 PM or 4:00 PM. Be said that when they entered the place of business, the -electronicelectronic equipment, speakers, public address systems, etc., were en the - right and left-hand sidelt in between a counter and a stairway that went to a storeroom on the second floor. Be related that most of RUBY's time at the club was spent talking business and he had the habit of always telling the employees who they could talk to. RUBY was somewhat outspoken, had a quick temper and when mad would use loud language in'his relations with the employees, On November 17, 1963, he recalls telling RUBY that be would desire tot• cease his employment there on the 18th. HeBe said that RUBY then told him he would put him on a'salary and persuaded him to stay indefinitely. CRAFARD said he was not too fond of the wprk and was not busy enough at the club. He also said RUBY had a .38 caliber revolver which he kept in a money sack locked in the trunk of his car. Be said that when trans- porting money, RUBY kept his money in the trunk with the revolver and always kept the revolver with him when 'movingmoving money. RUBY stayed at the Carousel until approximately 6:30 PM. ANDY, the bartender, was there, along with - , GEORGE, RUBY's roommate. At the laths, time, RUBY returned to his home and came back to the club at about 8:00 PM, when he °transported4/transported CRAFARDCRAFARD toto thethe ClubClub Vegas.Vegas. ThatThat evening, he called three or four times in regards to the crowd and Mrs. EVA GRANT, RUBY's sister, also called in regards to the crowd. At closing time, whichwhich waswas 2:00c7AM,2:0eAM„ RUBY RUBY called called andand saidsaid hehe wouldwould bebe latelate as the "law was at the glace" and LITTLE LINN, one of the strippers, was sick and he had to take care of her. On this date, RUBY was accompanied by a girl named GLORIA, who did not work at the club and who was about 22, white female, 5'6", 125 pounds, blond hair. This girl would be known to MARGIE (Last Name Unknown), waitress at the Carousel. Be said that RUBY returned him to the Carousel at approximately 4:30 AM, on November 21, 1963. On November 21, 1963, RUBY called the club to wake him up at about 11:00 AM, and then came in later in the afternoon, sometime between 12:00 and 3:00. ANDY was at the club at this time and hehe recalledrecalled therethere waswas aa 'woman,woman, alongalong withwith herher husband, who desired a job. Thereafter, RUBY left and later in the after- noon called him again to go. to the Vegas as the bartender. At about 7:30 PM, RUBY picked pis up and took him to the Vegas Club, and he did not see RUBY &vanswan until approximately 2:30 AN,AM, after -closing, at which timetine they again had breakfast at the Lucas B and B, returning to the Carousel at about 3:30 or 4:00 AM.

On November 22, 1963, he said he was awakened by ANDY,- the bartender, at 11:30 AM, by way of telephone. Be then dropped back to sleep and shortly after Noon, ANDY came to the Club, personally woke him up and stated that the President had been shot. Be had not heard from RUBY previously that date and at about 1:30 PM, RUBY came into the club and said the club would be closed that night and the entire weekend. Be told . 4 ANDY to notify the personnel and, thereafter, called the paper and placed an ad to that effect.' CRAFARD said that he was suchmuch surprised by this action as the club could not financially stand to be closed and it was strictly his opinion that RUBY did this as a gesture toto makemake goodgood willwill onon behalfbehalf ofof thethe 'public.public. RUBY left the Carousel at about 3:30 PM, being described by CRAFARD as "pretty well shaken up." They knew at that time there was an arrest of a suspect, but he cannot recall the name of any person being mentioned; however, the name of TIBBITS, the policeman, was mentioned and RUBY said he was acquainted with him. Upon.leaving, RUBY was what CRAFARD termed being emotionally disturbed. .HeBe toldtold CRAFARD to call Mrs. GRANT's home before be went to dinner and upon his return. This was nbt an ordinary request and CRAFARD had no knowledge of RUBY's reason. RUBY then came back to the club or called CRAFARD. about 7:30 PM that evening. Be did not discuss the assassination 4, he did not mention being at the police department or anything else.- He just.wanted to check in regards to telephone calls. He did not see RUBY again until the next day.

On Saturday morning, November 23, 1963, at about 5:30 AX,AM, RUBY called him and told him to meet him downstairs with the Polaroid camera and some film. RUBY was very excited and, in a matter of minutes, a telephone call was received from the fellow at. the All Wright Parking Lot, telling him that JACK'was there and to hurry up. When he got.to the 'car, GEORGE, RUBY's roommate, was also there and they drove out on the StemmionsStennions Freeway, where RUBY showed him a sign "Impeach ." On the end of this sign it said for further information writewrite' Post Office Box 1744 or'aor** similar number. RUBY instructed him to take three pictures ofof the signsirs - and they then drove to a waffle shop near the Carousel for coffee. RUBY and GEORGE were talking about the sign and the Post Office Box and they had mery little conversation concerning the assassination; RUBY then dropped CRAFARD off at the club at 6:20 AN and said that he and GEORGE were going down to the Post Office to look at that Post Office Box. CRAFARD said that , he was completely puzzled, as EARL WARREN was unknown t•to him. This was the last time he saw JACK RUBY. He also recalled thit while being at the waffle shop •nen Commerce Street, RUBY waswas reading about LEE HARVEY OSWALD in the newspaper. He, at this _time,_tine, did not express any previous knowledge or acquaintance with this individual and he (CRAFARD) had never, to the best of his knowledge, heard RUBY or anyone else at the club previously • •-

CRAFARD said that RUBY berated him for waking him up and he then decided to pack up and leave the club as he did not want to take any other verbal abuse. Be did not say anything to anyone about leaving and just packed his clothing, left the club,at.-.about 12:00 Noon that date and started hitchhiking north. Be proceeded north on 77 to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and on to Clare, Michigan,.whereMichigan,, where he arrived on Monday, NovemberNovember 25,25, 1963,1963, - at about 9:30 PM, at the home of a cousin, CLIFFORD ROBERTS. His main reason for coming north was to recontact his sistem Whowho had hot-written him for some time. He had no other explanation for his hasty departure, but said that it is just the way he does things. Returning to RUBY, he said that he can sever recall this individual making any statements concerning revenge on OSWALD. ConcerningConceraiag RDBY'sRUBY's re/itionsrestless withwith thethe police,police, CRAFARDCRAFARD said that on the average, two men in uniform would visit the club nightly at about 11:30 PM and receive free coffee. CRAFARD said that he had no knowledge himself of any Dallas policemen, but RUBY claimed to know the majority of men on the force. He said he was advised that off-duty policemen'.- could come into the club without -paying the $2.00 cover charge and that the ordinary price for beer and set ups was 60 cents and the policemen were to be charged 40 cents. request for employment at the club and RUBY became infuriated Air and stated that type of act was repulsive.
