And if some nameless Chinese sage hadn't beaten him to it, Mr. Hamman himself could have written the corollary maxim: "If you must play, decide upon three things at the start: the rules of the game, the stakes, and the quitting time. "At Dallas-based SCA Promotions Inc., that's what Bob Hamman does, venturing millions of dollars while playing the role of "the house." His business is risk management — meaning that for a cut, SCA insures payout on games of luck or skill for promotional contest sponsors such as Coca-Cola or Frito-Lay. This is something like being a bookie, except it's a $35 million insurance business that's all legal and aboveboard. No legs get broken. Those peel-and-win gimmicks on fast-food soda cups? Those fans trying for million-dollar basketball shots from half-court? Bob Hamman's the man who sets the rules and figures the odds — and, in the event of a lucky longshot, pays off the big winner.

The most common variation of Bergen raises in response to an opening bid of 1 or 1 is the following: Bergen Raises • A raise of opener’s suit to the two level shows 6 to 9 points and precisely three-card support. • A raise of opener’s suit to the three level is weak — preemptive — showing 0 to 6 points and four-card or longer support. • A jump to 3 is artificial (conventional) and shows four-card or longer support with 7 to 10 points. • A jump to 3 is artificial (conventional) and shows four-card or longer support with 11 or 12 points — a limit raise. • A jump to the three level in the other major is artificial (con- ventional) and shows a game-forcing raise with shortness — a singleton or a void — in one of the side suits. Opener may ask where the shortness is by making the next cheapest bid. • A jump to 3NT shows a balanced hand with precisely three- card support, game-going strength, and stoppers in all of the unbid suits. Opener may pass, bid the major suit to game, or look for slam.     ABOUT THE PLAYERS AND THEIR COACH NICK NICKELL Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, Frank T "Nick" Nickell now lives in New York most of the time. Nick is the driving force behind the composition of one of the strongest ever bridge teams. An investment banker and entrepreneur, Nick wanted to put together a very good team in the early nineties. His partner, Dick Freeman, suggested that Bob Hamman/Bobby Wolff and Jeff Meckstroth/Eric Rodwell were the two pairs needed. How right he was! This group (with Paul Soloway replacing Wolff in 1998) proceeded to reel off an amazing run of results. They have reached the final of four of the last five Bermuda Bowls - beating Canada in the 1995 final in Beijing, Brazil in Bermuda in January, 2000, and Italy in Monte Carlo in 2003 but losing to the French in Nick Nickell, photo by Peg Kaplan Hammamet in 1997 and to Italy in Estoril in 2005. They have also won too many US titles to list. Playing with Hamman, Nick won the Cavendish Invitational Pairs in 1998. He is a WBF Grand Master, ranking 10th in the current standings. Business and family commitments leave Nick and Dick very little time to work on their partnership between major tournaments, but there are rumors circulating that Dick, the consummate old schooler, will finally get hooked to the Internet to permit some online practice. BBOB HAMMAN Robert D. Hamman was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1938. He lived in California for several years early in his bridge career, learning much from the many great West Coast players of that era.
