Aussie Captain Ponting Censured for TV Smash 11:16, February 25, 2011 Aussie Captain Ponting Censured for TV Smash 11:16, February 25, 2011 Ponting after being run out; the captain allegedly destroyed a TV in a pique of rage upon returning to the changing rooms. A bizarre episode at the Cricket World Cup was finally closed on Wednesday when Australian Ricky Ponting paid the price for damaging a dressing room television in pique and was reprimanded by the game's governing body. After being run out against Zimbabwe, Ponting, 36, threw down a piece of cricket equipment only to see it ricochet and hit the TV screen, causing it to break. The International Cricket Council duly issued a statement on Wednesday confirming that Ponting had been reprimanded. Ponting was, it said, guilty of "abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match". Ponting accepted the verdict without the need for a hearing. "Ricky knows that his action was in breach of the code, involving a brief moment of frustration," ICC match referee Roshan Mahanama was quoted as saying. "That said, it was clear that the damage he caused was purely accidental and without malice, he apologized shortly after the incident at the ground and immediately agreed to pay for the damage." Ponting, who as captain has lifted the last two World Cups, escaped any further censure even though he could have been fined up to 50 percent of his match fee, the ICC said. The incident happened during Australia's comfortable win on Monday over Zimbabwe shortly after the skipper was run out for 28 in Ahmedabad, India. "Source:Shanghai Daily" .

But we had so much con- fidence in him, we said, ‘okay, this guy knows and we’ll bat first.’ We batted and got 190-odd if I remember right. • Press Release
Press Release A Sri Lankan’s life in love with cricket It all started with a fully cassocked priest playing cricket in the church green. Then, with a plastic bat in hand, a kid got going on a dusty driveway. Having been privy to quite some water flowing under bridges of cricket, Ranjan Mellawa traversed across exotic lands in eleven countries, pursuing his love of the game. Believe it or not, he had been present at virtually all epic moments in Sri Lanka cricket, including six World Cup finals. Winds Behind The Willows is a fascinating, informative story; a ringside seat portraying the years of Sri Lanka’s march to prominence in the context of the world game. As a fan and as a student of the game, Mellawa’s passion for cricket shines through every page of the book. Its interesting off-field anecdotes and mini-dramas, some involving famous cricketers, take you beyond the live cricket score on the card. The story seamlessly flows from the island nation’s pre-Test cricket days and spills over into his spell as the secretary of Ragama CC, a first-class cricket club in Sri Lanka, enabling him to relate some hitherto unpublished, firsthand accounts of Sri Lanka’s chaotic latter-day cricket administration. Amid the struggles for a balanced work-life, Mellawa recalls the opportunities he created for talented young cricketers, to take the next step and reach the top. The book also shares the rich life skills he developed and lessons learnt from the game's many alluring features.

Cricket - the way it should be played Ananda Nalanda - 81st Battle of the Maroons by Varuna Ratnaweera Next Saturday and Sunday, 6 th and 7 th March we will all have the pleasure of witnessing one of the best schools cricket encounters in Sri Lanka when the Battle of the Maroons, between Ananda and Nalanda, is worked out at the SSC grounds for the 81st occasion. This is considered as one of the best, not only because these two schools have produced so many great cricketers in the past but more importantly as the event has been and continues to be worked out with great friendship and camaraderie setting an example on how this great game should be played. The above picture of a car carrying two flags of Ananda and Nalanda was nominated the “Picture of the day” in the Daily Mirror on 7 th March 2009 demonstrating - to quote from the paper carried that day – “what the country needs very much at this point in time – peace and harmony”. We should all be thankful to Daminda Harsha Perera who had captured this photograph during the first session of the Maroons’ Battle last year. With that timely click of his camera he reminded the rest of the country what cricket should be all about, a game between two teams, not to outdo each other but to learn the lessons of good qualities it offers while fostering friendship and camaraderie across boundaries irrespective of any differences. This is the spirit in which the Maroons Battle has been worked out over the last 80 years.
