1 FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

Dear members,

Firstly, I would like to thank all our members who have supported me and the committee by attending functions and being part of the exciting numbers of attendees that we have had.

Secondly, I thank the members who renewed their membership after many years and shared their thoughts about the past and the present. I am sure we have delivered the real meaning of "A CLUB FOR THE GOOD TIMES".

Many members had given me feedback expressing that they are not in favour of too much time being taken up with speeches at the Anniversary Dance. The committee therefore decided to make some changes to the usual formalities. We would probably have had bigger numbers if we had a different type of dance such as a Rock and Roll or Bollywood night but nevertheless, we decided to go ahead with the tradition of recent years and hold an Anniversary Dance. Judging by the letters and comments received, most of the attendees have appreciated the efforts to make it a great night for all.

In a previous newsletter, I stated that I believe the late Albert Schokman needs to be recognised for his 10 continuous years of good work for the Silver Fawn Club. There will be a shield with a memorial plaque as “Albert Schokman Trophy”. This will be presented on the 23 of September at the Mansfield Tavern, by Cherry Schokman, to the winning Old Schools champion for 2017. We hope to continue this for many years with different sponsors and with the approval of the Silver Fawn Club.

Thank you, once again, to all the members who help to make things happen and those who attend functions to be part of the Club's development and success.

Isidore Storey

3 Appreciation from Anniversary Dance attendees:

Dear Issy, Behind every successful event is the planning, hard work, dedication - indeed the sacrifice, that the members who were responsible for organising the Anniversary Dance held on the 24th June ’17 contributed to. It was a most enjoyable fun filled event of good music, great food, drinks at an acceptable price, and a floor that could accommodate the many who wanted to dance. Marina joins me in thanking ‘you and your band of workers’ for a great evening!

Trevor

We thoroughly enjoyed the event. It was well planned with precisely executed programs. Food was amazing. Next time we will have to starve ourselves for a couple of days before we come for functions like this! So much variety and such tasty food. Nothing can go wrong when there is good food, good music, great company around.

Thank you to the committee and the volunteers who made the evening spectacular.

Looking forward to the next event.

Regards

Sankaar

TRADITIONAL "FARMER'S LUNCH" HELD 21ST MAY 2017

A turnout of 96 people gave a good boost to this traditional event. It is a place where we meet old friends and make new ones. It was also the market place to buy and take home traditional Sri Lankan fare. Such is the popularity of the market place, that the supply could not keep up with the demand!

Bingo and trivia was the order of the day. It seems the very popular past time of Bingo was invented around 1929 and found great favour, being a relaxed activity, undertaken in one's seat, “poking” holes into paper! It was good to see that Bingo still provides much excitement for our members and guests. The trivia contest and the resulting friendly rivalry, introduced a new and fun way to spend the afternoon.

The food, including the morning tea of traditional sweet meats of Kavum, Kokis and Kiribath, was designed to create a day in the Sri Lankan countryside. Lunch included some country favourites such as fish curry, Kola Mallum, dry fish, Bitter Gourd Sambol, Lime Pickle and Sambol.

Without a raffle the joy is incomplete. Some of our newest members, Christine & Derrick Pinto and Maithri Jayawardena, were lucky enough to be amongst the winners—a taste of the good times in store!

As a surprise gift from the Club, the following members who celebrated their birthday during the month of May were given free entry:

Thomazine Fernando, Barbara Storey, Rex Bowen and Becky Misso.

ANNIVERSARY DANCE HELD 24TH JUNE 2017

Once again, in true Silver Fawn style, Enoggera Bowls Club was dressed for the occasion and so were the members and guests who danced like they’ve never danced before!

Firing us up for the night was "Fire & Rain" who kept the crowd on their feet and entertained till late. Filling in with his well chalked out dance music was our ever popular DJ, Ty Fox, who never disappoints.

The hall had been very well set up for the 130 members and guests and needless to say a gala night, such as this, needs a lot of preparation. The grandly laid out buffet area would surely have been the envy of any hotel at the top end of town. Led by Barbara Storey, in the kitchen, with husband, Ashley, setting up those delicious dishes, the buffet was so well presented, complete with lighting and beautifully crafted décor.

Midway through the night, was a surprise presentation. Portraits of the 3 founder members of the club, who are still with us, were unveiled. Leslie Ephraims was presented with his portrait and although Eric Ferdinands and Denis Noble were not at hand to be felicitated, their portraits were handed over to be delivered to them. To complete the proceedings, a home baked and decorated cake, was cut by Daphne Ephraims.

It was heartening to see many members of past committees present in the relaxed atmosphere. The young and the old stole the show by the endless energy demonstrated by their non-stop dancing and that did say a lot for the music provided.

No Silver Fawn function is complete without a raffle and the committee thanks all donors of the large number of fabulous prizes. Unfortunately, the winner of the members’ draw missed out on the prize which was not handed out as the member was not present. Better luck next time!

As someone said, "nothing can go wrong when there is good food, good music & great company". So true.

Wow! What a night!

Claude
