Sweeting Volume 10, Number 4 • April 2018 Editor, Jeff Hunt MILITARY STRENGTH, This is like looking through the wrong end of a telescope. It UNDERSTANDING THE THREAT, is not American strength that’s provocative, it’s American AND AMERICAN SOVEREIGNTY weakness that’s provocative. That is the reality the new administration faced in January, Amb. John Bolton, WCS17 and several significant things have been done since then. The president proposed a significant increase in the military budget over the Obama administration proposals, and it looks like the House of Representatives will authorize that increase. While I’m a great believer in reducing and eliminating deficits, we need to build up the military. Doing so doesn’t require larger deficits, it just means there are more wasteful domestic programs that are going to have to be cut. This starts by changing the debate on the level of military readiness we need. We need to recreate and reestablish the missile defense system that the George W. Bush administration began to protect us from rogue nations’ nuclear weapons programs. We need to rebuild the Navy to a suitable level. Under the last John Bolton, National Security Advisor of the United States, speaking at the 2017 Western administration, we watched the number of ships in our Navy Conservative Summit. drop to 285, the smallest number since 1916. Most of our astute military observers think we need a navy of 355 ships, so It roughly six-months since President Trump’s inauguration you can see we have a long way to go.

  • Dear Church, Thyatira Bryan Dunagan, Sept
Dear Church, Thyatira Bryan Dunagan, Sept. 29, 2019 Well, it is so great to be with you, and I'm so thankful for our music leaders and for Ashley Irons. She is such a gift to me, I know, and my family. Thank you. She's one of my pastors in addition to her giftedness in leading music. She is just a woman of great wisdom and who loves Jesus. So, we have been in a series looking at these seven letters to seven churches in the Book of Revelation. I have loved this series. I hope that it has been helpful and encouraging to you, but part of it is just spending time in the last book of the Bible. I had a grad school professor who wrote this about Revelation: "If it ever became illegal in my part of the world, as it actually is in other places this very moment, to own a complete copy of the Bible, and if the authorities as an act of mercy allowed me to possess just one book of the Bible, I would without hesitation keep the last." "I would keep the Book of Revelation because," and he would often say this, "no other book in the Bible presents the gospel as powerfully as the last book does." No other book, in the face of all that threatens to undo us, announces this hope that we have in Jesus the way Revelation does. No other book helps us to see Jesus as clearly as he is right now as the Book of Revelation.

  • Violence and Disorder in the Sede Vacante of Early Modern Rome, 1559-1655
VIOLENCE AND DISORDER IN THE SEDE VACANTE OF EARLY MODERN ROME, 1559-1655 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By John M. Hunt, M. A. ***** The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee Professor Robert C. Davis Professor Noel G. Parker ______________________________ Professor Barbara A. Hanawalt Advisor History Graduate Program Professor Terri Hessler ABSTRACT From the death of every pope until the election of his successor in the early modern era, the entire bureaucratic and judicial apparatus of the state in Rome and the Papal States effectively ceased to function. During this interregnum, known as the sede vacante (literally, “the vacant see”), violence and disorder dramatically increased as the papal government temporarily lost its control over the populace and its monopoly of violence. The College of Cardinals and local civic governments throughout the Papal States, authorities deputized to regulate affairs during sede vacante, failed to quell the upsurge of violence that commenced immediately upon the pope’s death. Contemporary observers and modern scholars have labeled the violence of sede vacante as meaningless and irrational. I argue, rather, that this period of unrest gave Romans and subjects of the Papal States an opportunity to perform actions increasingly forbidden by the centralizing papal government—and thus ultimately to limit the power of the government and prevent the development of the papacy into an absolute monarchy. Acting as individuals or as collectivities, Romans and papal subjects sought revenge against old enemies, attacked hated outsiders, criticized papal policies, and commented on the papal election.

THE INDUSTRIAL ARTS ANGLO-SAXONS : THE INDUSTRIAL ARTS OF THE ANGLO-SAXONS. BY THE BARON J. DE BAYE, Correspondent of the National Society of Antiquaries of France, and of the Ministry of Public Instruction. HEUtb Seventeen Steel plates an& {riMrtg-one Zcit Cuts. Translated by T. B. HARBOTTLE. LONDON SWAN SONNENSCHEIN & CO. NEW YORK: MACMILLAN & CO. 1S93. PRINTED BY HAZELL, WATSON, AND VINEY, LIMITED, LONDON AND AYLESBURY. PREFACE. UR knowledge of the Barbarian peoples would be infinitely more exact if historians, in recording the various phases of the great invasions, had studied all the nations who I took part in them. Inquiry into the special developments and the particular tribal organisation of each of these numerous hordes provides us with material for a better general knowledge of the others, while the gaps in their annals may be filled by the aid of comparisons founded on ethnographic data. In any review of their origin, of the relations which they established along the line of their migrations, the alliances they contracted, the goal they sought, the treaties by which they bound themselves, their various halting-places before finally settling down— it is imperative that they should all be included in one general survey. These invaders, depicted hitherto in somewhat undecided colours, deserve to be more closely studied. Each tribal unit in turn throws light on its vast family, and illustrates its genera character by similarities in customs, language, industry, and tendencies. The interest attaching to the history of nationalities, and of the transformation effected in them by the incursions of the Barbarian tribes, has encouraged us to publish a sketch of Anglo-Saxon archaeology.
