Washburn History Washburn Ichabods Washburn history Washburn first fielded an inter- collegiate baseball team around the first of the century. Early yearbooks place the first team in 1898. The first records of baseball were in 1947. The first Ichabod boys of spring went 3-4 against the University of Nebraska- Omaha, Kansas State University and Missouri Valley College. The school's second team in 1948 went an impressive 10-0 followed by a 10-3 record in 1949. After a 2-6 record in 1950, Washburn discontin- ued baseball until Marion McDonald brought back the sport in 1957. The ‘57 Ichabods went 8-5 and finished fourth in the Eastern Kansas Baseball League with a 3-5 record. Through the 50-year history of the DeHart, inducted into the WU Hall of Fame baseball program, Washburn has amassed a 951- last year, is playing in the independent Northern 609-3 (.608) all-time record. Postseason Recaps, Line Scores, Stats & Records World Champions 1955 World Champions For the Brooklyn Dodgers, the 1955 World Series was not just a chance to win a championship, but an opportunity to avenge five previous World Series failures at the hands of their chief rivals, the New York Yankees. Even with their ace Don Newcombe on the mound, the Dodgers seemed to be doomed from the start, as three Yankee home runs set back Newcombe and the rest of the team in their opening 6-5 loss. Game 2 had the same result, as New York's southpaw Tommy Byrne held Brooklyn to five hits in a 4-2 victory. With the Series heading back to Brooklyn, Johnny Podres was given the start for Game 3. The Dodger lefty stymied the Yankees' offense over the first seven innings by allowing one run on four hits en route to an 8-3 victory. Podres gave the Dodger faithful a hint as to what lay ahead in the series with his complete-game, six-strikeout performance. Game 4 at Ebbets Field turned out to be an all-out slugfest. After falling behind early, 3-1, the Dodgers used the long ball to knot up the series. Future Hall of Famers Roy Campanella and Duke Snider each homered and Gil Hodges collected three of the club’s 14 hits, including a home run in the 8-5 triumph. Snider's third and fourth home runs of the Series provided the support needed for rookie Roger Craig and the Dodgers took Game 5 by a score of 5-3.

  • Raising the Bar Greatest Games Ever
July 24, 2009 Raising the BAR, Greatest Games Ever . My recent rove in the “treasured trove” found me finding a curiously dated missive entitled Scrap Book! Aside from the intriguing doubled meaning, the proceeding content made me more than content--it was a 1977 formula Barry called the BAR (Base Appearance Relation). The BAR was a prequel to the BOP that Codell chose not to publish, which for the first time enumerates Barry’s batting bases numerator, TB + BB + HP, shown as “actual bases.” His denominator (plate appearances x 4) was termed “possible bases.” The absence of outs in the formula led me to think this was the reason the BAR remained a “Gnostic statistic” (which was confirmed in today’s conversation with Codell—the BOP soon followed). At any rate, (or more specifically, actual per possible), let’s put the BAR on the leader board--yes! A second discovery was neatly though disparately placed in a group of Codell’s “Batter’s Box Scores.” Labeled “Greatest Games Ever,” it revealed the shortest of lists, using Barry Code stats to make its riveting points. It was simply this: 1. “Greatest Batter’s Game” (GBB)-- must be perfect (no outs!) Shawn Green – 22.5 AvBa/O outs (May 23, 2002) 2. “Greatest Pitcher’s Game” (GPB) – must be perfect game Sandy Koufax – O baserunners, 14 NCDA (September 9, 1965) Impossible to argue, now we know! Green’s 19 batting bases and 26 tallied bases from his 6 for 6, 4-homer game gave him the 22.5 Averaged Bases. Koufax’s 14 strikeouts without walk of hit batsman accounts for his Non-Contact Differential Average, making him, by the way, the only pitcher ever to fan over half (51.9%) of batters faced in a perfect game! I add the runner-ups: for batters, Jim Bottomley, 21.5 AvBa/O outs (September 16, 1924); for pitchers, Randy Johnson, 0 baserunners, 13 NCDA (May 18, 2004).

Burke, Glenn (1952-1995) by Linda Rapp Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Glenn Burke was the first major league baseball player to acknowledge his homosexuality publicly. Although the general public did not learn of his orientation until after his retirement, some people in professional baseball knew or suspected it during his playing days. Burke believed that homophobia in the culture of professional baseball impeded his chances for a more successful career in the game. "Prejudice just won out," he said. Burke was born on November 16, 1952 in Oakland, California, where he grew up. His father, Luther Burke, a sawmill worker, left the family when Glenn Burke was less than a year old. The senior Burke continued to have sporadic contact with his eight children, but it was his wife, Alice Burke, who took responsibility for supporting the family on her income as a nursing-home aide. Burke's athletic ability made him a star on the Berkeley (California) High School baseball and basketball teams. It was basketball that was Burke's primary interest at the time, and he dreamed of a career in that sport. His performance in high school won him an athletic scholarship to the University of Denver in 1970. He left the school after only a few months, however, saying that he could not abide the cold Colorado winter. Back home in the Bay area, Burke enrolled in Merritt Junior College and played on its baseball team. Still hoping for a career in professional basketball, Burke considered going to the Golden State Warriors' training camp for a try-out; but in 1971, before the camp opened, Burke signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, whose scout had been impressed by his play on the junior college team.

  • A's News Clips, Wednesday, November 10, 2010 Poole: Glenn
A’s News Clips, Wednesday, November 10, 2010 Poole: Glenn Burke's story says a lot about us By Monte Poole, Oakland Tribune columnist 11/10/2010 It is impossible to have a cursory awareness of American history, of who we are as a nation, without coming to the realization that beneath our supposed love is a foundation of hate. Despite lofty talk about togetherness and unity, the enduring truth is we victimize and stigmatize certain segments of society, usually based on such personal factors as sex, ethnicity, race, religion or sexual orientation. Sport, where common cause trumps individual agendas, sometimes transcends this and bonds us all, explaining why Jackie Robinson and Billie Jean King and Yao Ming are not mere athletes but cultural icons cheered by broad, diverse fan bases. Stories like that of Glenn Burke, however, remind us that even in sports we're all teammates until hate and intolerance intervene, saying we can't be teammates because we're not all alike. The life and death of Burke, superbly told in "Out. The Glenn Burke Story," which premieres at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco tonight at 7:30 and will be shown on CSNBA at 8, places a mirror before us all. It forces us to inspect ourselves -- or at least it should. Burke's modest goal was to achieve a peaceful coexistence between a baseball career and his homosexuality. He was denied because, as often is the case throughout our history, the fundamental definition of freedom was corrupted, this time by the politics of baseball's hierarchy.
