2020 Legislative Candidates ♦ District 1 (Southeast corner of Nebraska) –Senator Julie Slama: Peru. Republican. Appointed by Governor Ricketts in 2018. Law student at UNL, Political Science degree from Yale University; Former paraeducator. (6497 votes – 60.9%) . Janet Palmtag: Republican; Nebraska City. Founder of J.J. Palmtag Realty and past State President of the Nebraska REALTORS Association. BA in Business Administration from UNL and took post-graduate courses in art at Peru State College. Served as a Commissioner on the Nebraska Equal Opportunity Commission (1012-2018), Commissioner for the Nebraska Department of Economic Development, board member of the Nebraska City Veterans Building Project, and the Brownville Concert Series. (2232 votes – 20.9%) . Dennis Schaardt, Steinauer. Republican; Owns Den's Country Meats in Table Rock. Pawnee County Commissioner (Board Chair), member of the Pawnee County Ag Society, Pawnee County 4-H council, former chairman for the Village of Table Rock and more than 25 years as the Fire Chief for the Table Rock Volunteer Fire Department. (1937 votes – 18.2%) ♦ District 3 (Bellevue) Incumbent Senator Carol Blood: Democrat. Previously worked as the director of the La Vista Area Chamber and is currently a business specialist at Nebraska Self Employment Services. Served as the at-large representative on the Bellevue City Council from 2008 -2015. (4840 votes – 57.1%) . Rick Holdcroft: Republican; Retired Navy captain. Served in the U.S. Strategic Command and was a naval surface warfare officer. Graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Served on the USS Omaha Commissioning Committee and as president of the Bellevue Rotary Club and the Ak-Sar-Ben chapter of the Air Force Association. (3633 votes – 42.9%) ♦ District 5 (Southeast Omaha) Incumbent Senator Mike McDonnell: Democrat, Former Omaha Fire Chief. President, Omaha Federation of Labor (AFL-CIO). Teaches labor negotiation at UNO. Has Master’s degree in Public Administration – Bellevue University, Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice and Associates degree in Fire Protection Technology from UNO. (3205 votes – 70.2%_ . Gilbert Ayala: Republican. Moved to Omaha in 2013, previously lived in AZ, TX, NM, and NV. Grocery Store and restaurant owner. Has Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from University of Texas-El Paso. Ran against McDonnell in 2016 and received 23.97% of vote in primary and later dropped out of the race. (1362 votes – 29.8%) ♦ District 7 (Far East Omaha) Incumbent Senator Tony Vargas: Democrat. Director of Policy and Advocacy for a national education non-profit. Former member of the Omaha Public Schools Board of Education representing the communities of Downtown and South Omaha. 2837 votes – 81.2%) . Jorge Sotolongo: Republican, a vice president of NAI NP Dodge Real Estate, joining the company in November 2017. Prior to that he a property manager for S&R Development. Sotolongo has a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology and French from St. Louis University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He is fluent in Spanish and French. (655 votes – 18.8%) ♦ District 9 (East Omaha, North of I80 and South of Dodge) – Incumbent Senator Sara Howard is term limited. Marque Snow: Democrat; OPS Board President. Bachelor’s degree from University of South Dakota. Program Director at Nebraska Center for Workforce Development. (2896 votes – 39%) . John Cavanaugh: Democrat; Asst. Douglas County Public Defender, Former aide to Senator Ben Nelson and Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey, Brother of Senator Machaela Cavanaugh (3459 votes – 47.1%) . Mark Vondrasek: Democrat; Bicycle mechanic, Active in Omaha Tenants United and Democratic Socialists of America (993 votes – 13.9%) ♦ District 11 (Northeast Omaha) Incumbent Senator Ernie Chambers is term limited. Fred Conley: Democrat; Enterprise Zone Coordinator with the Greater Omaha Workforce Development. BS degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and JD from Creighton University. Has served on the Papio NRD since 1999. Former Omaha City Council and Metro Community College Board member. Serves on the boards of the Omaha Small Business Network Board and the Butler-Gast YMCA. (1282 votes – 35.3%) . Terrell McKinney: Democrat; Community Activist, Creighton law student, Masters in BA from Midland University. Former UNO wrestler, Coaches at Omaha North HS and Ready RP National Wrestling, Black Men United Board member, Nebraska Democratic Party’s Black Caucus member. (663 votes – 18.3%) . Dennis Womack: Republican; Former deputy Douglas County Election Commissioner, US Dept. of Labor, Ran unsuccessfully for Metro Board of Directors, Omaha City Council, and Douglas County Board. (554 votes – 15.3%) . Teela Mickles: Democrat; Founder and CEO of Compassion in Action, which helps people with rehabilitation and meaningful life after jail-- as well as looking to break the cycle with youth and stop kids from ever becoming involved with crime. (427 votes – 11.8%) . Cornelius Williams: Democrat. Member of Learning Community Coordinating Council. Holds a bachelor’s degree from Stamford, Master’s from Texas A&M, and PhD. from Michigan State – all in Physics. (256 votes – 7%) . John Sciara: Republican. Military veteran. Farmers Insurance agent. (129 votes – 3.5%) . Gwen Easter: Democrat. Childcare business owner and Dyslexia advocate. 316 votes – 9%) ♦ District 13 (Far Northeast Douglas County) Incumbent Senator Justin Wayne, Attorney and CEO of Trailblazers Constructors, LLC. Creighton University and Creighton University School of Law (J.D.). ♦ District 15 (Dodge County / Fremont Area) Incumbent Senator Lynne Walz. Fremont Real Estate agent, former member of Chamber of Commerce, teacher, and executive director of Bethpage of Northeast Nebraska. (6123 votes – 69%) . David Rogers: Republican; Owner of Professional HPP Services (repairs and services ultrahigh pressure equipment). Adjunct Professor at Bellevue University in Cyber Security with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronics Management from Southern Illinois University, and a master’s in computer systems management from Creighton University. United States Air Force veteran formerly stationed at Offutt AFB. Former Chair of the Dodge County Republican Party. (3792 votes – 31%) ♦ District 17 (Dakota, Thurston & Wayne Counties / Northeast Nebraska) Incumbent Senator Joni Albrecht, Republican. Owns cow-calf operation and farms near Thurston. Member of Farm Bureau Board of Directors. (3363 votes – 72%) . Sheryl Lindau: Democrat from Wayne; Mayor of Wayne from 1994 to 2004 and has also served on the Nebraska State College Board of Trustees and the Nebraska League of Municipalities. Holds a degree in political science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Previously owned a retail clothing store in Wayne and worked for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands between 2007 and her retirement in 2015. (1305 votes – 28%) ♦ District 19 (Madison County / Norfolk Area) Incumbent Senator Jim Scheer, term limited. Mike Flood: Owner, Flood Communications, Radio broadcasting company, News Channel Nebraska, state television network, Attorney with Jewell & Collins, Board of Directors for Invest Nebraska, TeamMates Mentoring Program, Children’s Scholarship Fund Omaha; Former State Senator (2005-2013) and Former Speaker of the Legislature. ♦ District 21 (Northwest Lancaster County) Incumbent Senator Mike Hilgers 36, Lincoln. Republican. Attorney and co-founder of Gober Hilgers law firm. Omaha native, University of Chicago Law School, practiced in Texas until 2009. (5007 votes – 59.4%) . Brody Weber: Democrat: Current Student at UNL, VP of Client Relations for Mid America Casing Supply, LLC in Airpark. Grassroots organizer opposing the CAFO proposal near Raymond. Appointed by Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird to Lincoln’s Keno/Human Services Advisory Board and Board of Directors for Community Action Partnership of Lancaster and Saunders Counties as well as the Highlands Neighborhood Association. (2290 votes 27.2%) . Joseph Couch: Democrat; Mathematics degree from Doane in 2016. Member Nebraska Army National Guard (1130 votes – 13.4%) ♦ District 23 (Butler, Colfax & Saunders County) – Incumbent Senator Bruce Bostelman, Republican. Brainard. U.S. Air Force Veteran. Member of Bohemian Alps Wind Watchers and Center for Rural Affairs. (5674 votes – 62.5%) . Helen Raikes: Independent; Lives outside of Ashland. Known as an expert in early childhood education, she is retiring as early childhood education professor in the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Family is involved in farming and cattle production. She is the widow of former Senator Ron Raikes. (3408 votes - 37.5%) ♦ District 25 (Northeast Lancaster County) Incumbent Senator Suzanne Geist, Republican, Volunteer with Clinic with a Heart and a member of Berean Church. Also sells women’s clothing. (10,140 votes – 72%) . Stephany Pleasant, Democrat: Lincoln. Stoff attorney for Student Legal Services at UNL. Received JD from UNL Law in 2017. Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and German from UNL in 2013. (4004 votes – 28%) ♦ District 27 (West Central Lincoln) Incumbent Senator Anna Wishart Democrat; Director of Partnerships, Beyond School Bells. Former member of the Lincoln Airport Authority. (5593 votes – 71.2%) . Brenda Bickford, Republican. IT project manager for Nelnet. (28.8%) ♦ District 29 (South Central Lincoln) – Incumbent Senator Kate Bolz term limited.
