WELCOME to the October edition of Teme Triangle. This month it’s all things harvest…from the hops to the hay bales, all is gathered in and the ploughing season well under way. So, we bring news of our harvest festivals, the abundance of good food we enjoy locally and the country traditions that define this valley.

But first, a harvest of a different kind.

When Bryn Hopkinson from took his dog for a walk recently he brought home a bounty of a quite different kind. On the freshly ploughed ground of Rodge Hill he found not one but two canon balls, relics of a Cromwellian heritage perhaps? He told us:

“It has been suggested that the stones are from the Cromwellian era,and potentially the fragmentation grenades of their day. Can anyone throw any more light on them? The theory is that in the run up to the Battle of Worcester either Royalists or Cromwellians maintained an artillery position in the field in question which gave views not only over the City of Worcester but also up and down the Teme Valley. Seven stone balls have been found in roughly the same position in the field after early Autumn ploughing.”

Curiouser and curiouser. There is relatively little documentation of the Civil War activities in this immediate area so history buffs might like to share their views with us?

Meanwhile at Hursley Farm glorious weather was enjoyed by everyone attending the annual ploughing match, hosted by Andrew Yarnold. My thanks to Sue Barnes for sending us her photos.

Sue and her husband John hosted an unusual event in Clifton recently with a ‘locally sourced’ wedding, when daughter Jennifer married Andy Hill from Blackburn at St Kenelm’s. The village hall was transformed and it was all hands to the pump!

“The WI did the catering, local farmer Harvey Richards provided the pig roast, Phil Richards loaned us the bales of straw and local band Horizon Lights performed. We had a local Morris dancing group and Malvern Hills Lions ran the casino. Many items were loaned for donations to charity with both The Silurian Border Morris Side and Lions raising funds for good causes”

“It was a superb day and many of the guests commented on the wonderfully friendly village. We were grateful for the kindness of everyone on the day. “

I think that’s what they call ‘harvesting goodwill’.

Harvesting goodwill seems to be a theme this month – here’s an article from Iain Patton and Ian Kirby two local FOAG Village hall transformed for the day Members.

OUT OF AFRICA TO WORCESTER - IN STORIES MUSIC AND FOOD Local people have helped to bring health, education and enterprise to thousands of rural Ugandans for 30 years through Farmers Overseas Action Group. Individuals, families, schools, churches and businesses have connected with the success of FOAG in small-scale direct support to aspiring Africans.

On Friday 12th October at 7.30 you have the chance to meet the people behind FOAG and find out how you can help. There will be Ugandan food and songs of Africa from Worcester’s own Volcano choir.

And you will be able to hear how, against all odds, Sister Sophie Akin built a centre to seek out disabled children, operate on their twisted limbs and give them an education and, most of all, hope. www.foag.co.uk

HARVESTING TREES Anyone driving up Stanford Hill recently will have noticed that daylight has broken through! Over 30 acres of the Winnington Estate’s forest has been felled and 3,000 tons of timber has been lifted. And before you shout ‘shame’ they will shortly be replanting 30,000 native broadleaved trees to replace them.

Between the 1930s and 1980s, hundreds of thousands of hectares of Britain’s beautiful and irreplaceable ancient woodland were felled and replanted, mostly with commercial conifers, or a mixture of conifers and broadleaved trees.

This well-intentioned government strategy to make Britain more self-sufficient in timber had dire consequences for wildlife. Whole fragile ecosystems were devastated, and since then remnants of the unique communities of plants, animals and fungi that depend on ancient woodland have clung to life in isolated pockets within dense plantations.

Research commissioned by the Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity, shows that we need to restore replanted ancient woods and changes in national policy, are encouraging woodland owners to restore sites sympathetically.

A license is required for felling and this generally stipulates replanting with native broadleaved species.

MEAT ON THE MENU AT CLIFTON STORES And still on the subject of local produce, with British Food Fortnight in full swing (21st September – 6th October), news from Clifton Stores that they area now stocking fresh meat, sausage and bacon supplied by Bowketts butchery from . Peter Richards told us:

“We are firmly committed to using local suppliers, where possible, and Bowketts Butchery fits that criteria exactly with their excellent reputation, for locally sourced meat and producing most of their products on the premises.

We will be stocking their Gold Award winning Traditional Pork Sausages , Short Back Bacon and Cooked Meats also small amounts of Minced Beef, Chicken portions and Lamb/Pork chops in our fridges. We hope that customer demand will allow us to increase the range we stock. Orders can be placed for any amounts, but must be placed by Wednesday 12 noon for delivery to us on Thursdays.

Churchwith Pat Snelling Matters St Matthew wrote: ‘For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in. I needed clothes and you clothed me.’ Many of you will be aware of the work of St Paul’s Hostel for homeless people in Worcester. St Paul’s provides accommodation and support to single homeless people within Worcester city and the county. As well as the 46 bed hostel it also operates a dry house, and substance misuse and rough sleeper outreach. Opened in 1977, originally for rough sleepers, in the former vicarage of St Paul’s Church, in the old Blockhouse area of the city. The building was once the home of the Revd. Studdert Kennedy. He was nicknamed ‘’Woodbine Willie,’’ First World War Chaplain and decorated war hero, famous for giving out Woodbines to wounded troops. At the end of the ‘70s the hostel relocated to its present site at Tallow Hill, into the building of the former Worcester Work House. Since then the range of services have widened to reflect the problems and needs of life in the 21st century, and St Paul’s has recently been awarded a grant of £400,000 to assist them in their unstinting care and support of homeless people within our city. What might not be generally known is that St Kenelm’s has had a working association with St Paul’s for well over 30 years. There is a faithful and committed group of people in the village who go on a regular basis to serve suppers and chat and befriend the residents. Also, for all these years St Kenelm’s have collected and taken clothes, bedding and harvest produce to the hostel to be distributed as required to the resident’s. All these things have been gratefully received by the staff and residents alike. There is always a chorus of thank you for coming from the residents when we go off duty and leave for home. Having witnessed the provision of care and inclusiveness of the residents at St Pauls these words of Jesus come to mind. ‘This is my commandment; love one another as I have loved you’ And this means endless understanding of each other’s frailties, forgiveness, tolerance - all that is fine and noble. There is too little love in this world of ours, and what a difficult and delicate thing it is to handle; into what pitfalls can we fall. But it is the constant love of God for us, and the love of each other, which is at the heart of the Christian message. That love, I sense, sustains the continuing work at St Paul’s Hostel. Anyone wishing to join the Clifton volunteers please contact Pat Snelling 01886 812 443.

HAVE A GO AT THE ALL SAINTS LYCHGATE!

The reason why the lychgate needed such drastic renovation was that water had been trapped inside the wood at the base and caused it to rot. The remains of the brown paint, or similar coating, are still on the parts of the structure that did not need replacement, and anyone passing the church will have noticed the contrast between the old brown paint and the new wood.

The new wood will, in the course of a year, change to a silvery grey colour. Scraping off the brown paint reveals the wood underneath to be that same silvery grey colour.

We now have a couple of professional tools which will take most of the brown coating off fairly easily. But it does require quite a bit of elbow grease and there is a lot of wood to do.

We invite anybody to take a turn with the scrapers, adopt their little bit of the structure, and remove as much as possible of the brown coating. We are not looking for perfection, but this method should bring about a significant improvement.

Please contact John Sumner (812483) to book your turn with the scrapers!

ST KENELM’S CHURCH PAST AND FUTURE

St Kenelm’s has a very interesting past and is much loved in the present. To continue this interest and love well into the future we now have to plan with some serious thinking.

Every household in Clifton is receiving a small booklet outlining the way we hope to play a part in the life of the village, and indicating how this needs to be paid for. We are inviting gift-aid donations to help us make up the present shortfall of over £11,000 per year.

If you would like more details on this, and perhaps would like to know why we are inviting support from people who don’t come to church much, please come along to our open meeting at The Village Hall on Wednesday October 10th at 7.30pm. Drinks will be served on arrival and the presentation will start with a brief history of St Kenelm’s. Then we will go into some of the hows and whys and wherefores and we will do our best to answer questions as fully as possible. See you there? You will be very welcome.

DEANERY LADIES PRAYER BREAKFAST. Ladies from the deanery meet at the Cob House, once every two months for prayers, a talk and then breakfast.

In September, Nigel Roberts, working in prisons as a member of the Independent Monitoring Board , an appointment of the Ministry of Justice, talked about his voluntary work. His Christian perspective of the prison system was interesting, perturbing, and informative. His upbeat view was an inspiration to us all.

The next ladies prayer breakfast is on Saturday November 3rd where we will discuss the start time, and listen to another speaker. In 2013, weather permitting we meet on January 4th at the Cob House.

BENEFICE QUIET DAY. The annual benefice ‘Quiet Day’ is taking place on November 3rd at Holland House, Cropthorne. The day will be led by The Revd Dr Clifford Owen, former Rector of this benefice. The day will begin at 10 am until 4 pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to have some quiet spiritual refreshment prior to the busy Christmas period. Please do come and experience the delightful and uplifting setting of Holland House, you will be most welcome.

For further details please contact Pat Snelling. 01886 812443, [email protected]

SING YOUR HEART OUT CLIFTON MUSIC PERFORMANCES FOR ALL The Hope Singers, formed two years ago under the tutelage of South African jazz singing star Pinise Saul during her visit to Clifton, enjoyed another workshop day last month (Sept) led by Sue Harris, a natural voice practitioner and leader of several community choirs. Funding for the event was generously provided by a Worcester Community Grant. The original Hope Singers were joined by several more local residents the following day at the Sunday morning service in St. Kenelm’s church where the congregation were treated to a delightful performance. There will be another Friday Night Is Music Night evening at St. Kenelm’s on Friday, 26th October when the Hope Singers will be performing along with the Hope Quartet, the St. Kenelm’s church choir and local jazz pianist Alfie Newman. In November there will be a further workshop day with Sue Harris and the Hope Singers in the village hall in Clifton on Saturday, 24th November followed once again by a performance at the St. Kenelm’s Sunday service the next day. Tickets for the workshop on the Saturday - £5 each - can be obtained from Sue Johns (01886 812304) or e-mail [email protected]
