The daylight is Wednesday 6th December, 12.30pm diminishing, chill winds are blowing and we live ‘Nia Dance’ with Sonya Leite in a part of London where 47% of householders live alone. Many of us are well used to our own Thursday 7th Dec, 6.45 for 7-8pm company and rather enjoy our privacy and ‘Heart & Soul: Hospitality - In or Out?’ independence. But we are social beings and the Led by Jane Blackall forced jollity of Christmas advertising can heighten the isolation experienced by the most Sunday 10th December, 11am-noon committed of hermits. Isaac Newton and Socinianism Isaac Newton was not a Socinian.1 That is to say, he was not a commu- nicant member of the Polish Brethren, nor did he explicitly embrace the Socinian Christology. The Origins of Unitarianism Roger Fritts August 14, 2011 Unitarianism is an old religion. It was not created overnight. It did not appear suddenly in the last few years. This religious movement has been part of western culture a long time. Men and women with courage created it. They were willing to make great sacrifices for their beliefs. Yet often Unitarians are ignorant of our own history. It has something to do with our openness to change and our excitement about the future. The latest discovery of science draws our attention. The past seems less important. Nevertheless, it is good to understand our roots. It gives us a foundation on which to build. It gives us perspective, so that we are less likely to be victims of fads and fashions. One historian put it this way: "It is a curious error to suppose you can carry on effectively a great liberal tradition when remaining at the same time ignorant, or almost ignorant, of the beliefs and achievements of the people who have handed that tradition over to you." So this morning at the beginning of a new ministry, I want to tell a story about a time seventeen hundred years ago. The story took place in the ancient cities along the Mediterranean coast. It is a story about a theological controversy that shaped the development of religion. When the disciples of Jesus first established the Christian church a few years after the death of Jesus, its organization was loose. It consisted mainly of small groups of people. Leaders and priests arose from within the small groups. -

:Faustus Socinus's A Tract Concerning God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit Introduction, Translation, and Contemporary Relevance Alan W. Gomes Introduction As I pointed out in a recently published book chapter,1 one of the values of studying historical theology is that it allows us to "pump intellectual iron" with some of the great thinkers of yesteryear. We can learn a tremendous amount from the theological debates of the past because they were often waged by intellectual giants, the likes of whom we typically do not see today. Nor should we think that the orthodox had a monopoly on all of the brains in these disputes. As I noted in that chapter, I commonly tell my students that they simply do not make heretics like they used to! As an example, I often cite Faustus Socinus (1539-1604), well known for his denial of many of the cardinal teachings of orthodoxy, such as the doctrine of the Trinity, the deity of Christ, pe nal substitution, and God's foreknowledge of future contingent events. In Socinus "we encounter a mind well versed in the biblical languages, classical literature, logic, philosophy, exegesis, and theology, all pressed into the service of overturning the historic doctrines of the faith!" 2 Now, there are at least two reasons for engaging the arguments of a "dead and buried" opponent like Socinus, particularly for someone Journal of the International Society of Christian Apologetics, Volume 1, Number 1, 2008 38 ISCA JOURNAL called to an apologetics ministry. First, "in this way we may be able to spar vicariously with adversaries tougher than the ones we face in our day-to-day ministries."3 This builds up our "theological muscles," mak ing it easier to deal with less formidable opponents. -

By this conveyance I send three copies of the debates of the Massachusetts convention,2 one of which you will please to present to Dr Price, with my most respectful compliments, and another to my friend Mr Hazlitt.3 The new constitution of government has been almost the sole object which has occupied the minds of the people of these states during several months past. It has kindled the flame of party zeal among us; but it has fortunately in its favour a large majority of the rich, the wise, and the virtuous. You will find the constitution less democratick, than might be expected from a people who are so fond of liberty. Various causes have conspired to render republican sentiments unfashionable; among which may be mentioned Mr J. Adams's publications,4 a late insurrection in the state of Massachusetts,5 and the corrupt proceedings of the legislature of Rhode-island.6 Several states have not yet given their opinion; but the constitution will probably be adopted by eleven at least. It is supposed that New York and Rhode-island will be in the minority. A few of our old patriots fear that the government will terminate in aristocracy or monarchy. It is impossible to foresee what the event will be. I can only pray, that God will preserve us from the tyranny of kings, and the insolence of nobles. Amidst these apprehensions, it affords pleasure to reflect that though civil liberty may possibly lose, yet that religious liberty will certainly gain, by the new constitution.
