It’s my pleasure to introduce [The Speaker in the chair] to you and through you to all members of the Assembly a group of outstanding individuals who are here today celebrating Human Rights Day at the Legislature with us. Ai-Men Lau, BA, BSW Student Ai-Men is a fourth year undergraduate social work student at the University of Calgary. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and sociology from the University of Alberta. Her younger brother was diagnosed with autism at an early age and Ai-Men has been heavily involved with organizations that support people with autism. When her brother reached the age of eighteen, his experiences as an adult with autism cultivated a passion in Ai-Men to pursue alternative ways in supporting and empowering children and adults with autism. Alexandra Sieben, BSc Alexandra completed her undergraduate science degree with a major in psychology and minor in linguistics. During this time, she worked with people living with language disorders but, did not truly understand the challenges that a person with aphasia and language disorders face until she started working with Daralynn.

At the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre, we recognize that fundamental to ethics is a concern for whom or what is other to ourselves. The essays in this collection challenge this stereotype by exam- ining the varied experiences of Ukrainian Canadians in their day-to- day roles as writers, intellectuals, national organizers, working-class wage earners, and inhabitants of cities and towns. Throughout, the con- tributors remain dedicated to promoting the study of ethnic, hyphenated histories as major currents in mainstream Canadian history. Topics explored include Ukrainian-Canadian radicalism, the conse- quences of the Cold War for Ukrainians both at home and abroad, the creation and maintenance of ethnic memories, and community discord embodied by pro-Nazis, Communists, and criminals. Re-Imagining Ukrainian Canadians uses new sources and non-traditional methods of analysis to answer unstudied and often controversial questions within the field.     President’s Message Dear Members: ver the past year, the Alberta Division Board of Directors, working in collaboration with staff and volunteer Oleaders across Alberta, developed a “Strategic Plan” entitled “Maintaining the Momentum.” This is not a static report and the name was chosen with purpose. In the year 2005 Alberta will celebrate its 100th Anniversary. In that same year, CMHA will celebrate 50 years of social action, education and innovative services to Albertans. We should be proud of our achievements, but humbled by how much more needs to be done. During my term as President we have made significant gains by working together. I am most pleased by the progress we have made with regard to: • Convincing government officials to make mental health a priority • Influencing Alberta’s new mental health plan • Maintaining an Alliance of professionals, consumers and advocates • Diverting ill people from the criminal justice system • Promoting new housing options • Protecting sensitive health records • Developing innovative suicide prevention services And much, much more. As we move into Alberta’s second century, we have new promise. Changing attitudes and new services are on the horizon. But we are also facing new government leadership, new CMHA leadership and new roles for local communities who will have increasing responsibility for providing crucial services. These changes will provide us with opportunity. Change also carries risk. We must ensure that we “maintain the momentum.” I would like to thank all of the outstanding Board Members, Volunteers and CMHA Staff with whom I have worked during my years as President. You are the reason why our organization continues to be so effective.
