BIRDING FIELD TRIPS IN ESSEX COUNTY Led by Dave Hall, Associate Naturalist

Field trips are designed for ages 12 and up. Have you ever wanted to “bird watch” but didn’t know where to begin? Would you like to find some of the hidden gems in Essex County? Let Audubon be your guide. Summer is the time to see, hear and learn about the species of birds that nest in Essex County. Walks encourage beginners and challenge experts. Birding in Troy Meadows Saturday, September 8, 2018 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM Led by Dave Hall. Troy Meadows in East Hanover is an excellent place to encounter ducks, herons, and marsh birds, plus migrating passerines. Park at the Environmental Center and We will carpool to the trail head. Montclair Hawk Watch Open House Thursday, September 20, 2019 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM Facilitated by Dave Hall. Join NJ Audubon's official Hawk Counter in spotting and identifying hawks as they move through the ridges of the . Park along Edgecliff Road (just off of Bradford Avenue in Cedar Grove) and look for the pathway to the stairs. The stairway is steep, but worth the effort. Bring a hat, water and a folding chair. Birding in Essex County South Mountain Reservation Saturday, September 22, 2018 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM Led by Dave Hall. At the peak of the fall migration, we will search for passerines, raptors, and maybe a few waterfowl. Meet at the Turtle Back Zoo parking lot where we will carpool to various locations within the park. Urban Birding in Essex County Thursday, October 11, 2018 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM Led by Dave Hall. Take a leisurely walk in this Olmstead-designed park in Newark. This is an amazing place for migrating birds including thrushes, wrens, waterfowl and more. Meet at the Cherry Blossom Visitor’s Center at the north end of the park. Go Birding at Essex County Becker Farm Saturday, October 13, 2013 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM Led by Dave Hall. The woods and meadows at this former dairy farm attract an excellent diverstiy of southbound migrants in the fall. There is also the opportunity to climb up the ridge to overlook the Passaic River Valley. Meet at the Essex County Environmental Center and carpool to the entrance. Annual Canoe Brook Reservoir Count Saturday, November 17, 2018 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM Led by Dave Hall. NJ Audubon has been granted access to New Jersey American Water reservoirs, one of the best places in Essex County for wintering waterfowl. We may catch a glimpse of hawks and perhaps a Bald Eagle.
