IMPACT OF NHPRC IN

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) promotes the preservation and use of America's documentary heritage essential to understanding our democracy, history, and culture. Since 1964, the NHPRC has awarded $207 million to 4,900 projects in all 50 states and special jurisdictions.

Projects of Special Value to the State of New York:

The NHPRC has played a unique role in supporting historical PUBLICATIONS and RECORDS projects of special value to New York including:

 Establish a Network of Archives in New York – support to establish or enhance archives at such institutions as the New-York Historical Society, the Tamiment Library, Guggenheim Museum, , Syracuse University, Marist College, the Center for Jewish History, Thirteen/WNET, the Paul Taylor Dance Foundation, Rochester Institute of Technology, American Foundation for the Blind, SUNY-Albany, Union Theological Seminary, , Brooklyn Historical Society, Buffalo and Erie Historical Society, , New York City Municipal Archives, New York Folklore Society, Staten Island Historical Society and many others.  State Archives Enhancements – funding to support the New York State Archives in preserving records, enhancing access, preparing for emergencies and managing electronic records.  Publishing Historical Records – funding to research and publish multi-volume editions of the papers of such noteworthy Americans as Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, Florence Kelley, Harriet Jacobs, Clarence Mitchell, Jr., Margaret Sanger, Jacob Leisler, a digital collection of the papers of Lowell Thomas, and others.  Local records in New York – support to help organize, preserve, and facilitate the use of county and local records throughout the state from New York City to the Village of Medina  Native American Heritage – funding to appraise, process, publicize, and make accessible records pertaining to under-documented groups including the Saint Regis Mohawk and the Seneca Nation tribes. Support includes training Native American archivists in maintaining tribal records.  Preserving Special Format Collections – funding to preserve, arrange, describe, and make accessible photographs, audio recordings, film, and other special format archival materials, including the American cartoon collection at Syracuse University, the Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. Archives, Archives of Labor Photographers, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and the records of the World Trade Center disaster.  Documenting New York’s Heritage – support for the Centro de Estudios Puertorriquenos as Hunter College, the American Sephardi Federation, and several Jewish American communities, photographs of Chinese settlements in Chinatown, New York’s early Dutch heritage, and African American collections.  Electronic Records – the Brooklyn Museum of Art’s electronic records; New York University’s Archives and Public History course curriculum; the New York State Archives online tools for collections security, and the InterPARES project baseline research in electronic records.
