Two species of the genus Tefflus Latreille (Coleoptera: Carabidae), commonly known as “peaceful giant ground beetles,” are recorded from the Republic of South Africa: T. carinatus carinatus Klug and T. meyerlei delagorguei Guérin-Méneville. Distribution records from the Republic of South Africa are summarized and mapped for both species. Tefflus c. carinatus has been collected in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga Provinces, while T. m. delagorguei has been recorded from Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga Provinces. Adults of both species are illustrated. Seasonal and temporal activity patterns and defensive and foraging behaviors are characterized for T. m. delagorguei based on recent field studies in the Kruger National Park, Republic of South Africa. Introduction The genus Tefflus Latreille (Coleoptera: Carabidae) contains 14 species widely distributed throughout sub-Saharan Africa (Basilewsky 1946). Members of this genus can be recognized by their large body size (24-55 mm in length) and their distinctive body form (Figure 1). In South Africa, these beetles are known by the popular name of “peaceful giant ground beetles” (Picker et al. 2004) to distinguish them from the “oogpisters” of the tribe Anthiini (Carabidae), which spray highly concentrated acidic secretions from their pygidial glands when disturbed (Scott et al. 1975; Huey and Pianka 1977). Species of the genus Tefflus are predators of land snails, particularly the giant land snails in the genus Achatina Lamarck (Gastropoda: Achatinidae; Figure 2). These snails have the potential to become agricultural pests when introduced into areas outside their natural distribution (Barker 2002), and spe- cies of Tefflus have been considered as possible biological controls of Achatina species (Krauss 1955, 1964). According to Davis and Butler (1964), four species of Tefflus have been introduced to Hawaii as potential biological control agents of the introduced giant land snail Achatina fulica Bowdich. As with other genera of flightless Carabidae, the taxonomy of Tefflus has been problematic, and the genus has been revised in whole or in part several times (Chaudoir 1878; Kolbe 1886, 1904; Sternberg 1908, 1909, 1910). The most recent revision is that of Basilewsky (1946) who incorporated studies of male reproductive structures as well as a comprehensive study of external anatomy and geographic distribu- tion. Questions remain, however, about the number and identity of the species of Tefflus found in south- ern Africa. Péringuey (1896) did not record any species of this genus from the present-day Republic of South Africa in his monumental revision of southern African Carabidae. Basilewsky (1946) provided several records from the present-day Republic of South Africa for one species and a questionable record for a second. Picker et al. African insects but only identified these individu- als to genus. In this paper, we present new infor- mation about the natural history and distribution of the species of Tefflus known from the Republic of South Africa. This paper also forms part of a series investi- gating the taxonomy and natural history of south- ern African Carabidae (including Cicindelinae), with focus on the fauna of the Kruger National Park. Kruger National Park is the largest con- servation area in the Republic of South Africa and home to significant populations of many large-bod- ied mammalian taxa, including African elephant (Loxodonta africana (Blumenbach)), white rhinoc- Figure 1. Adult female of Tefflus meyerlei delagorguei, eros (Ceratotherium simum (Burchell)), black rhi- N’waswitshaka Research Camp, Kruger National Park. noceros (Diceros bicornis (L.)), hippopotamus (Hip- popotamus amphibius L.), Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer (Sparrman)), lion (Panthera leo (L.)), leop- ard (Panthera pardus (L.)), cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus (Schreber)), and numerous antelope spe- cies (Du Toit et al. 2003). In contrast, the carabid beetle fauna of the Park is poorly known, although components of the Park’s fauna have been treated in monographs by Basilewsky (1977) and Cassola (2002). Our recent contributions towards the knowledge of this fauna include Mawdsley and Sithole (2008, 2009) and Mawdsley (2009). Materials and Methods Figure 2. Field investigations of the natural history of T. m. delagorguei were conducted in the Kruger Na- tional Park, Mpumalanga Province, Republic of South Africa, between 7 December and 20 December, 2009, and between 28 November and 16 December, 2010. Our investigations focused on the areas sur- rounding the Skukuza, Pretoriuskop, and Satara tourist camps, where many of the museum specimens

In particular, the position 15 of Cicindelidae (tiger beetles) appears problematic, as recent studies have found them either 16 within the Hydradephaga based on mitogenomes, or together with several unlikely relatives 17 in Geadeadephaga based on 18S rRNA genes. We newly sequenced nine mitogenomes of 18 representatives of Cicindelidae and three ground beetles (Carabidae), and conducted 19 phylogenetic analyses together with 29 existing mitogenomes of Adephaga. Our results 20 support a basal split of Geadephaga and Hydradephaga, and reveal Cicindelidae, together 21 with Trachypachidae, as sister to all other Geadephaga, supporting their status as Family. We 22 show that alternative arrangements of basal adephagan relationships coincide with increased 23 rates of evolutionary change and with nucleotide compositional bias, but these confounding 24 factors were overcome by the CAT-Poisson model of PhyloBayes. The mitogenome + 18S 25 rRNA combined matrix supports the same topology only after removal of the hypervariable 26 expansion segments.

To overcome problems associated with both the size of the group and the comparative paucity of available information, our analysis was made at the genus level (requiring synonymizing taxa at different levels across the trees) and used Safe Taxonomic Reduction to remove especially poorly known species. The final supertree contained 401 genera, making it the most comprehensive phylogenetic estimate yet published for the group. Interrelationships among the families are well resolved. Gyrinidae constitute the basal sister group, Haliplidae appear as the sister taxon of Geadephaga+ Dytiscoidea, Noteridae are the sister group of the remaining Dytiscoidea, Amphizoidae and Aspidytidae are sister groups, and Hygrobiidae forms a clade with Dytiscidae. Resolution within the species-rich Dytiscidae is generally high, but some relations remain unclear. Trachypachidae are the sister group of Carabidae (including Rhysodidae), in contrast to a proposed sister-group relationship between Trachypachidae and Dytiscoidea. Carabidae are only monophyletic with the inclusion of a non-monophyletic Rhysodidae, but resolution within this megadiverse group is generally low. Non-monophyly of Rhysodidae is extremely unlikely from a morphological point of view, and this group remains the greatest enigma in adephagan systematics.

Die Autoren werden gebeten, Manuskripte als WORD-Dokument per mail oder auf CD an das LWL-Museum für Naturkunde zu senden: Schriftleitung „Abhandlungen“ Dr. Bernd Tenbergen LWL-Museum für Naturkunde Sentruper Straße 285 48161 Münster [email protected] Das Manuskript sollte folgenden Aufbau haben: Überschrift, darunter Name (ausge- schrieben) und Wohnort des Autors, Inhaltsverzeichnis, kurze Zusammenfassung in deutscher und ggf. englischer Sprache, klar gegliederter Hauptteil, Literaturverzeichnis (Autoren alphabetisch geordnet), Anschrift des Verfassers. Lateinische Art- und Gattungs- namen sind kursiv zu schreiben. Alle Autorennamen im Text sowie im Literaturverzeichnis sind in Kapitälchen (z. B. RUNGE, F. (1976)) zu schreiben. Alle Tabellen und Abbildungen (Karten, Zeichnungen, Fotos) müssen eine Verkleinerung auf Satzspiegelgröße (12,6 x 19,8 cm) zulassen. Sie sollten als druckfertige pdf- und/oder Bild-Dateien eingereicht werden. Alle Abbildungen und Tabellen sind zusammen mit den Bildunterschriften bzw. Tabellenüberschriften nicht nur im Text eingebunden, sonderen auch als gesonderte Datei beizufügen. Fotos sind möglichst digital (Auflösung 300 dpi) oder in schwarzweißen Hochglanzab- zügen vorzulegen. Cintaromorpha gen. n. and C. dacatrai sp. n.: a new genus and species of Panagaeini from Pakistan (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Panagaeinae). Baltic J. Coleopterol., 16(1): 15 - 19. Cintaromorpha gen. n. and C. dacatrai sp. n. from Pakistan are described. The new genus is similar to Cintaroa aptera Kasahara in the shape and structure of the ligula and paraglossae, but the two genera can be readily separated by the shape of the head and pronotum. The new genus differs from all other panagaeine genera by combination of large size, long legs, en- tirely black coloration, elongate ligula, transverse tooth of mentum, and simple, uncleft fourth tarsomeres. Messer1 Abstract A survey of Carabidae in the state of Wisconsin, U.S.A. yielded 87 species new to the state and incorporated 34 species previously reported from the state but that were not included in an earlier catalogue, bringing the total number of species to 489 in an annotated checklist. Collection data are provided in full for the 87 species new to Wisconsin but are limited to county occurrences for 187 rare species previously known in the state. Recent changes in nomenclature pertinent to the Wisconsin fauna are cited. ____________________ The Carabidae, commonly known as ‘ground beetles’, with 34, 275 described species worldwide is one of the three most species-rich families of extant beetles (Lorenz 2005). Ground beetles are often chosen for study because they are abun- dant in most terrestrial habitats, diverse, taxonomically well known, serve as sensitive bioindicators of habitat change, easy to capture, and morphologically pleasing to the collector. North America north of Mexico accounts for 2635 species which were listed with their geographic distributions (states and provinces) in the catalogue by Bousquet and Larochelle (1993). In Table 4 of the latter refer- ence, the state of Wisconsin was associated with 374 ground beetle species. That is more than the surrounding states of Iowa (327) and Minnesota (323), but less than states of Illinois (452) and Michigan (466). The total count for Minnesota was subsequently increased to 433 species (Gandhi et al. 2005). Wisconsin county distributions are known for 15 species of tiger beetles (subfamily Cicindelinae) (Brust 2003) with collection records documented for Tetracha virginica (Grimek 2009).
