Before coming to WFU, Greer was head coach at Davidson and succeeded in getting that program to a competitive level. Greer broke into coaching in 1972 when he started the program at Connecticut-Avery Point from scratch. Ron Wellman Director of Athletics

Ron Wellman, who has elevated athletics to its highest level ever and committed to preparing the program for greater success in the future, enters his 12th year as director of athletics. Wellman, who was officially named athletic director in October of 1992, is only the fifth man to assume the top position in the athletic department at Wake Forest dur- ing the modern era of intercollegiate sports, following Pat Preston, Jim Weaver, Bill Steve Adams Joe Arnone Gibson and Dr. , WFU’s athletic director from 1964 through 1992. Operations Ticket Manager Since taking over control of WFU Athletics, Wellman has seen Deacon athletic teams rise to national prominence in several sports while perennially competing for Atlantic Coast Conference championships. The 2002-03 academic year - a banner year by any definition - was the evidence. In June, Wellman received the prestigious honor as the Division IA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Off the playing fields, Wellman has spearheaded an effort for the overall development of the student- athlete. He asks his coaches to stress academics and Wellman has instituted programs to assist and develop student-athletes away from competition such as the annual Academic Excellence Banquet, a campus-wide affair which honors those student-athletes who have achieved in the classroom. Another obvious sign of the progress Wake Forest has made - and is continuing to make - under Wellman’s leadership is the ambitious facility improvement program that the athletic department has Greg Collins Chris Grilli undertaken. Sports Medicine Operations The most recent construction project was that of new office and meeting space for the Deacon foot- ball team and staff. WFU varsity coaches have modern and spacious offices, all housed near to their teams’ practice facilities, dressing areas and academic counseling center. Spry Stadium, WFU’s cam- pus soccer facility, provides the school with one of the finest practice and competition arenas for that sport in the country. The varsity tennis teams and entire Winston-Salem community benefit from a state- of-the-art Indoor Tennis Center. And, of course, there is the spectacular Bridger Field House at Groves Stadium, which provides sup- port to every varsity team as well as the athletic department administration and entire university with its many services. The dean of all ACC athletic directors, Wellman has also taken an active role on the national level. Wellman serves on the NCAA Division I Management Council. Recently he served as chairman of the NCAA Baseball Committee and directed the implementation of a new and expanded national tourna- ment format, creating significant interest in that event. Wellman also serves as vice-president of the Division I-A Athletic Directors’ Association. Wellman’s successful career in college athletics includes both coaching and administration on a vari- ety of levels. Born in Celina, Ohio, he earned his undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University, where he was a pitcher on the varsity baseball team. Wellman and his wife Linda have three daughters -- Angie, who works for ESPN Regional in Charlotte, Brett Hickman Dwight Lewis Nicole, a student in the Wake Forest University Medical School; and Melissa, a graduate student in the Operations Associate AD Wake Forest University counselor education program.
