Visitor Parking: Parking is provided in the main Visitor Parking lot (VV) accessed from College Avenue, between Old Main and the Eisenhower Campus Center. Parking tags are not required during the Symposium. While designated handicapped parking is distributed throughout campus, spots closest to Symposium venues are available in the employee parking lots behind the Jordan Science Center (WW) and in the circle at the heart of campus (YY). Dining facilities: The Lottie Nelson Dining Hall (upper level) and The Falcon (lower level; soup, paninis, salads) are located in the Eisenhower Campus Center. The Union Café (pizza, grill, wraps, salads) is located in the Larsen Student Union. 2 Using this Booklet This Program and Abstract booklet provides times, locations and titles for all presentations in the Symposium. A consolidated “Schedule at a Glance” (page 4) summarizes the schedule of all Oral Presentations and Poster Presentations (page 6). Presentation Number: Each presentation has been assigned a unique Presentation Number based on its order in schedule. To allow for cross-referencing, this number is used throughout the booklet to identify the presentation and will be displayed with each poster to aid your navigation during the Poster Session. Authorship: All contributing co-authors and mentors are listed in the Program (page 9) and Authorship Legend: Abstract section (page 32). Bold font indicates bold indicates a presenting author * indicates a research or project mentor the names of presenting authors. An Index at † the end of the booklet (page 75) lists the names indicates an off-campus contributor of all authors alphabetically with the number(s) of each presentation on which each is included. Discipline Categories: Program & Symbols: Presentations in Engineering, Computer & Information Science, Biopsychology Mathematics and Physics are organized in Cellular & Molecular Biology discipline-specific sessions. Presentations in the Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Chemistry & Biochemistry Nutrition & Dietetics, Exercise Science and Computer & Information Science Biopsychology are organized in integrated sessions to encourage cross-disciplinary exposure with the Engineering Natural Sciences. Posters in Evidence-Based Nursing Care will be highlighted in dedicated poster Exercise Science venue (page 22). Throughout the Program and Mathematics “Schedule at a Glance” unique symbols designate the various disciplines. Generally, we will look into when and why a young man should choose to turn professional. I will begin by throwing out a few provocative rules, and then we will see how the rules line up against the reality of an individual player's ability.     Ontario Blue Jays Hall of Fame Induction Gala: Class of 2012 with Cecil Fielder as Keynote Speaker JAN 8 Posted by Jonathan Hacohen Sunday January 8, 2012 MLB reports – Jonathan Hacohen: On Friday night, I got to combine two of my favorite loves: baseball and food. The Ontario Blue Jays were kind enough to invite MLB reports to be a part of their Gala Dinner and Inaugural Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The event was held at La Primavera, a beautiful banquet facility in Woodbridge, Ontario (Canada). It was definitely a night to remember. The OBJ delivered former MLB slugger Cecil Fielder as the Keynote Speaker for the evening. Having grown up watching Big Daddy play on the baseball field, it was an honor and privilege to speak to him during the night. More on Cecil to come, but let’s say that he certainly did not hold back in his speech. Cecil discussed everything in his captivating address to the starstruck audience. From growing up and playing football/baseball, to his time in Japan, Toronto, Detroit and New York. Cecil also touched upon his personal life, including his recent remarriage and of course, son Prince Fielder. But firstly, the event itself. Director of Baseball Operations for the OBJ, Dan Bleiwas put together a first-rate program. From the Keynote Speaker, to the inductees, memorabilia auction and of course, the food! I had my eye on a Carlton Fisk autographed lithograph among the many prizes available up for grabs. But with the big spenders on hand that night, it was not meant to be.

    Canadian Players in MLB QUICK FACTS ◆ Ferguson “Fergie” Jenkins is the only Canadian-born MLB player in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He is also the only pitcher is MLB history to strikeout more than 3,000 batters while walking fewer than 1,000 batters. ◆ Larry Walker was selected to five All-Star teams and won the National League's Most Valuable Player Award in 1997. ◆ Adam Stern, who now plays for the Baltimore Orioles, hit an inside-the-park home run while playing for Team Canada in the inaugural World Baseball Classic. An inside-the-park home run occurs when a batter hits a home run without hitting the ball over the fence. Typically a player must be very fast to achieve such a feat. ◆ In 2006, rookie Russell Martin and veteran Eric Gagné became the first French- Canadian battery in MLB history. They are all Jews who played for the Pirates There is a long standing stereotype that says that Jews can’t play sports, that they have brains, but no brawn. In 1907, Harvard president Charles Elliot said, “Jews are definitely inferior in stature and physical development.” A 1998 New York Times article referred to, “that reputedly rare species – the Jewish athlete.” Well, last week I was watching the Bucs play the Tigers at PNC Park, and there, on the Tigers bench, sat Manager Brad Ausmus, a Jew, and out at second base was an All Star by the name of Ian Kinsler, another Jew. And one of the greatest sluggers of all time, a former Tiger, and later in his career a Pittsburgh Pirate, Hank Greenberg, was also a Jew. Current Jewish players in MLB also include Ryan Braun of the Brewers, Ike Davis of the A’s, Scott Feldman of the Astros, Jason Marquis of the Reds, Craig Breslow of the Red Sox, Jason Kipnis of the Indians, Danny Valencia of the Blue Jays, Sam Fuld of the A’s, Ryan Lavarnway of the Orioles, and Joc Pederson of the Dodgers. So who were the best Jewish players ever? Let’s start with Sandy Koufax, perhaps the best left handed pitcher of all time. How good was Koufax? Well, the fans who voted in Baseball’s balloting for the All Century Team picked Koufax as the top lefthander of the century, trailing only Nolan Ryan in the overall voting for pitchers.
