    ::: Fotofestiwal 2011 ::: | ELLEN KOOI Copyright Fundacja Edukacji Wizualnej http://fotofestiwal.com/2011/en/exhibitions/main-programme/out-of-life/ellen-kooi/ ELLEN KOOI Out of Sight In the images of Dutch photographer Ellen Kooi we are offered the hazy landscapes of the Netherlands – flat, wet fields that stretch as far as the eye can see, the streams that flow calmly between verdant banks and the wooded areas with their neatly-planted rows of trees. In these tranquil settings, laced through with a foggy and vaguely melancholic atmosphere, there occur minute events that are both mysterious and playful, but which subtly mar this orderly pastoral calm. It is as if in the photographs of Ellen Kooi there was always something going on behind the scenes: something ambiguous, some split that makes us to oscillate between enchantment and madness, or amusement and uneasiness. The artist’s preference for skilfully orchestrated settings which she balances on a razor’s edge between normality and senselessness and playfulness and perturbation, is perhaps the result of her love of the theatre where she began her photographic career. Having debuted as a theatre photographer, she treats her subject models like a stage director treats his actors. Kooi is best known for her large-scale photographs of people set against the Dutch landscape, which seem to balance on the border between reality and fantasy.

After the success of her retrospective in 2010 in Paris at the Dutch Institute, she’s back with new pieces. The photographs of Ellen Kooi are concerned with the symbiotic rela- tionship between the landscape and those who enter it. Her pieces are readable as compelling poetic stories through her use of the panoramic perspective. In these stories both the landscape and the human figures in it function as protagonists. This explains the show’s title - Next to Me – it refers to the slowly developing feeling of kinship with ones sur- roundings. People seem to be eager to establish a narrative relationship with the natural locations they encounter. The hills, forests and lakes are given names and are surrounded with numerous fantastic tales. By doing so these places are given a human meaning and become part of a collective memory. This mythologizing process stands in shrill contrast with the hardly magical reality of the urbanized Dutch landscape. Kooi tries to envision the lyrical connection between man and nature without losing touch with the soberness of this reality. Her photographs show ritualistic acts and poetical gestures within imposing landscapes. But the nearby parking lot full of tourists or the suburbs looming on the horizon are never erased.

This new body of work continues Kooi’s exploration of the Dutch landscape as well as her ability to create hyper realities. Kooi situates people in natural settings and through distinct technical feats creates narratives that recall fairytales, movies and dreams. These large scale photographs, which are always shot in the daytime, allude to various tales that are hinted at but never revealed. Kooi’s background in theatre is evident by the way she stages her photographs. Using a large format camera, she sets up elaborate lighting to create a set within the natural landscape. She stages the character(s) to dramatize and bring into focus the moods and stories of the scenes being created. The natural elements are transformed, becoming more than mere backdrops. Kooi’s intense method of producing and processing her images exaggerates the unnerving realness of the situations being depicted. All of these photographs tell a story; some are absurd, some are mysterious and some are magical. All of them bring you to this place, this familiar yet unnamed setting where anything seems possible. In both the photographs that show groups of people and those that are solitary, there is a sense of something unseen causing action or inaction. It is this hidden energy that makes the viewer as unaware as the character(s) in the picture of what will happen next.

M. Barrie au pays des polders. En effet la jeune photographe néerlandaise met en scène des personnages en situations irréelles dans ces paysages singuliers tendus entre ciel, terre et mer. Les images qu’elle produit nous renvoient immanquablement à cet univers du conte : elle mêle avec subtilité le merveilleux et la peur. Car si au premier abord on croit voir de jolies saynettes, en y regardant d’un peu plus près, on découvre très rapidement toutes sortes de tensions et de regards effrayés, des personnages souvent nombreux mais qui semblent être des copies les uns des autres et qui surtout n’ont aucun contact entre eux. Ses photos sont un peu à l’image de ces terres hollan- daises qui sous une calme apparence débordent de tensions et où les éléments se heurtent.
