A special word of thanks is the least I can give. First of all I would like to thank my supervisor, Prof. Dr. Marco Caracciolo, for being the supervisor every student dreams of having, for giving me advice whenever I felt I needed it, for stimulating me to come up with my own ideas and for being enthusiastic yet critical when I presented them. Secondly, Prof. Dr. Hilde Staels who has introduced met to The Sisters Brothers in her lecture on contemporary Canadian literature and provided me with a list of initial sources on the Western. Saar for motivating me during the many hours we spend working side by side each on our own dissertations. My parents and my brothers for putting up with my absence and for giving me the support I needed. My other friends, you all know who you are, for supporting me in this process and giving me the opportunity to relax and do something else once in a while.

  • How Did Europe Become an American Turf?
How did Europe become an American turf? Bertrand M. Roehner, University of Paris 6 (UPMC: University Pierre and Marie Curie) Ramstein Air Base, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany (2014). 2 3 The United States has conducted nation-building operations since 1898 and does so in a uniquely American way. After defeating Spain in Cuba and routing their forces from the Philippines, the United States began nation- building efforts to establish democratic governments that were representa- tive of the populace. —Colonel Jayne A. Carson, Nation-building. The American way (April 2003) “We must contemplate an increase in the activity of the USIA [US Infor- mation Agency, created in 1953] and vastly increase exchange programs with the key population elements of the intelligentsia, the labor leaders and the newspaper leaders.” —Vice-President Richard Nixon, 366th National Security Council (22 May 1958) “If the proposed student and other groups which we are to organize in Latin America go out and fight for pro-American causes, we must avoid giving any over-emphasis to our policy of trying to keep Latin America as a safe preserve for US private enterprise and US private investment. We must rather go along with the sentiments of the people [even though] this may sound like promoting socialism.[...] We have been for some time promoting the development of a Common Market in Europe. Why could we not make a similar effort on behalf of a Common Market for Latin America?” —George Allen, head of the USIA, 366th National Security Council (22 May 1958) There is a strong family resemblance about the misdeeds, and if you have all the details of a thousand at your finger ends, it is odd if you can’t unravel the thousand and first.

FINE SERIES ENTRYBy SCOTT W SCHUMACKOne of the best things about this long running series is the way it wanders between realism, pure fantasy, and science fiction-tinged stories. The art remains beautiful and the book leaves you waiting for the next chapter. In their island fortress, Kriss and Shaigan still reign over their band of pirates and raiders. But Shaigan is beginning to have doubts, and when a prisoner who knew him calls him Thorgal, the child of the stars begs the gods of Asgard to give him back his name and his destiny. In return, the gods require that Thorgal travel to the kingdom of giants and steal from their ruler... and then Thorgal will be Thorgal again. He’s a child of the stars, beloved of the gods and touched by destiny, but also a reluctant hero, a simple man with simple dreams. Thorgal: an extraordinary Viking saga with strong elements of science fiction, by one of the master scriptwriters of Franco-Belgian comics. Already 13 volumes available from Cinebook! About the AuthorJean Van Hamme was born in 1939 in Belgium.
