Lenviel 2021 https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6321-2690 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION RACE YOUTH IN TWENTIETH-CENTURY AMERICAN LITERATURE AND CULTURE Race Youth in Twentieth-Century American Literature and Culture argues for the centrality of black youth, both real and literary, to the trajectories of African American literature and its repudiation of white supremacy. Drawing on research into the rise of the adolescent and teenager as distinct social categories, I argue that age-based subjectivity should inform how we read race-based subjectivity. My first chapter explores how early twentieth-century black periodicals push back against white supremacist theories of human development in an explicit appeal to what I call “race youth,” the children and adolescents who would take up the mantle of racial uplift. My second chapter examines how, amidst the Great Depression, protest writing reframed youth through a discourse of economic vulnerability to confront the inequity of government accountability in the Roosevelt era. I then consider the influence of the teenage rebel figure on post-1945 African American literature and argue that Cold War black authors unveil the deeply entrenched sexual and racial discourses that regulate and discipline rebellion during the turbulent era of desegregation. The final chapter analyzes twenty-first century young adult protest fiction through the lens of the previous century’s development of black adolescent subjectivity. Sparked by the killing of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman in Stanford, Florida, and Zimmerman’s acquittal as well as the police killings of other black men and women, including Michael Brown, Rekia Boyd, and Freddie Gray, this movement challenges police violence and other policing that makes black communities unsafe as well as social constructions of black people as inherently dangerous and criminal. Police violence against black people and the interrelated criminalization of black communities have a long history, older than the US itself. There is a similarly long and important history of activism and social movements against police violence and criminalization. Today, black people are disproportionately subject to police surveillance and violence, arrest, and incarceration. So, too, are other people of color (both men and women) and queer, trans, and gender nonconforming people of all races but especially those of color. This course will examine the history of policing and criminalization of black, queer, and trans people and communities and related anti-racist, feminist, and queer/trans activism. In doing so, we will interrogate how policing and understandings of criminality—or the view that certain people or groups are inherently dangerous or criminal—in the US have long been deeply shaped by race, gender, and sexuality.

    June 12, 2020 OPEIU LOCAL 8 Statement on the Murder of George Floyd and Nationwide Protests We stand in solidarity with every working person who is outraged and voicing their rejection of the systemic violence and racism that has allowed the incalculable lynchings of unarmed Black people in this country for hundreds of years, most recently George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Tony McDade. We cannot remain silent as people of color are extrajudicially killed at the hands of police. We cannot ignore the devastating effects of systemic racism and oppression in our communities. We will not shy away from stating BLACK LIVES MATTER because it's true and some people need to be reminded of that simple fact. We stand with those who are rising up to effect change and dismantle oppressive systems. We believe the true violence is the looting of human lives and continued police brutality.     The “Spirit of Saratoga” must not be slavery Response to the repulsive wall of “lawn jockeys” that both glorify slavery and erase the history of Black jockeys, currently installed at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. This is not an act of vandalism. It is a work of public art and an act of applied art criticism. This work of protest art is in solidarity with the Art Action movement and the belief that art is essential to democracy We Reject the whitewashing of Saratoga’s history. We Reject the whitewashing of our national history. This nation was founded on slavery. So was the modern sport of Thoroughbred racing. You insult us and degrade the godfathers of the sport by perpetuating, profiting from and celebrating the flagrant symbol of servitude and slavery that is now called the “lawn jockey.” Just like the confederate flag, the “lawn jockey” is a celebrated relic of the antebellum era. The evolution of the hitching post (later renamed “lawn jockey”) follows the historical national trend of racist imagery and perpetuated stereotypes about Black Americans. This iconography is not unique, and the evidence can be found in everything from postcards, napkin holders, toothpaste, key racks, cigarette lighters, tobacco jars, syrup pitchers and doorstops, to name a fraction of the products designed to maintain the ideology of slavery. The original Jockeys were born into slavery or were the sons of slaves. From its inception in the early 19th century, African-American jockeys ruled the sport of organized Thoroughbred racing for almost a century. Isaac Murphy, the greatest American jockey of all time, was the son of a former slave.

    Before London started swinging: representing the British beatniks David Buckingham This essay is part of a larger project, Growing Up Modern: Childhood, Youth and Popular Culture Since 1945. In his autobiography, Personal Copy, the journalist and broadcaster Ray Gosling describes a feeling of imminent change that was shared by many young people at the very end of the 1950s: There was just this feeling… that we were important, that something was going to happen. How, and in what direction, we didn’t know. And we didn’t much care. It was a very, very, very odd feeling, but we felt it. Gosling himself came from a frugal working-class background in the provincial English city of Northampton. In 1959, he dropped out of university and set up a youth centre in Leicester that was run autonomously by a committee of young people. The academic Richard Hoggart – the author of The Uses of Literacy, who was soon to become the founding director of the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS) at Birmingham University – was on his management committee. Although Gosling’s youth centre collapsed, he developed the argument for youth-led welfare provision in a pamphlet for the Fabian Society; and he went on to build a career as a writer and public speaker, offering an insider’s perspective on the emerging youth culture of the time. He became associated with the New Left, and began to mix in the more cosmopolitan culture of London’s coffee bars, making friends with Stuart Hall (then the editor of the New Left Review) and the novelist Colin MacInnes, whom he described as his ‘mentor’.

    Contentious Cosmopolitans: Black Public History and Civil Rights in Cold War Chicago, 1942-1972 by Ian Maxwell Rocksborough-Smith A Thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of History, at the University of Toronto © Copyright by Ian Maxwell Rocksborough-Smith, 2014 Contentious Cosmopolitans: Black Public History and Civil Rights in Cold War Chicago, 1942-1972 Ian Maxwell Rocksborough-Smith, Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of History, at the University of Toronto, 2014 This dissertation looks at how teachers, unionists, and cultural workers used black history to offer new ways of thinking about racial knowledge from a local level. Numerous efforts to promote and teach this history demonstrated how dissident cosmopolitan political currents from previous decades remained relevant to a vibrant and ideologically diffuse African American public sphere despite widespread Cold War dispersions, white supremacist reactions, and anticommunist repressions. My argument proceeds by demonstrating how these public history projects coalesced around a series of connected pedagogical endeavors. These endeavors included the work of school teachers on Chicago's South side who tried to advance curriculum reforms through World War II and afterwards, the work of packinghouse workers and other union-focused educators who used anti-discrimination campaigns to teach about the history of African Americans and Mexican Americans in the labor movement and to advance innovative models for worker education, and the activities of important cultural workers like Margaret and Charles Burroughs who politicized urban space and fought for greater recognition of black history in the public sphere through the advancement of their vision for a museum.
