Who are we … Countrystyle Recycling is a leading Kent based privately owned waste management and recycling company capable of handling, processing, disposing and recycling almost all forms of waste. Our flagship facility, at Ridham in Sittingbourne, Kent, provides specialist services for the recycling of plasterboard, wood, organic waste and the manufacture of RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) collectively ensuring 100% diversion from landfill. Countrystyle Recycling’s corporate sponsorship, together with the sponsorship raised by participants, is put towards the educational work of the KM Charity Team across the county’s schools. At this year’s event held at Betteshanger Park, near Deal, we took over a colour station and brightened up the competitors’ day… and bodies! Schools Initiative Recently we teamed up with James Moss and Adam Hodder from Kent County Cricket Club and visited Iwade School to teach the pupils about the 4R’s (Respect, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). We started with a presentation about the importance of protecting the environment through responsible waste disposal before splitting into teams to come up with scenarios around the Spitfire ground where waste is produced and has been dealt with. The class then headed out into the playing fields for some coaching from the Kent Cricket Community members on batting, bowling and fielding techniques. 8 Walk to School & Walderslade Primary We attended a very special assembly at Walderslade Primary School to present the “Green Class of the Week” with ice skating vouchers for the whole class as a result of their superb efforts to turn to green travel to get to school. This is one example of our involvement as part of our commitment to the Walk to School scheme across Kent following its 2016/17 launch at Leeds Castle earlier this summer. The programme has already achieved an impressive feat by reducing the number of journeys on Kent’s roads by around 250,000 which has not only improved road safety, but also the health and well-being of those who have taken part. Kent Cricket – Schools Day Out As Kent County Cricket Club’s lead Community Sponsor, Countrystyle was at the heart of the recent KCCC Schools Big Cricket Day Out held at the St Lawrence Ground, Canterbury.

    THE TIMES REPORTS, 1889 Saturday 20 April: THE COMING SEASON Although the season of 1889 will not be marked by the visit of an Australian team, there is to be a little variation on the purely English programme in the shape of a tour of Philadelphian cricketers. These gentlemen were over here in 1884, when they made what may be termed a holiday trip. In that year their matches were limited to two days, but in the approaching summer they will be extended to three. Now, as then, they will meet only amateurs. The team leave New York on June 10, and are expected to reach Dublin on the 28th of the month. There they will play two matches – one against the Trinity College Long Vacation Club and the other with the Gentlemen of Ireland. They will next be opposed by the Gentlemen of Scotland at Edinburgh, after which will follow their various engagements in England. Any profits that may accrue to them from the matches the Americans intend to hand over to some philanthropic institution connected with cricket. At the MCC the programme arranged is of the usual extensive character. The plan of playing the two fashionable matches – Oxford v Cambridge and Eton v Harrow – in separate weeks has again been adopted. First in order comes the University match on July 1, and the Public Schools contest is to be decided on the Friday and Saturday of the following week. The Gentlemen and Players meet on July 8. The inability to get representative teams of North and South for Whit Monday caused Marylebone last year to play a match between colts of the two divisions.

The painting clearly shows all 11 Kent players who took part in that match, as well as two Lancashire batsmen and one of the two umpires officiating that day. It shows flags flying and marquees crowded with spectators, as well as the bell tower of Canterbury Cathedral in the distance. Most importantly, at least to the man who commissioned it and to the members of the committee of the Kent County Cricket Club that paid for it, it shows that season’s champion county in action at the height of their powers. It shows them showing off their skills among the large friendly crowds who flocked to Canterbury for Cricket Week, the oldest and most fashionable cricket festival of them all. As The Times leader writer put it a few years later in 1919, 9 Stories of Cricket’s Finest Painting after the long bleak years of the First World War, ‘Originally the property of Kent alone, the Week is now the property of all who love the game.’ Canterbury Cricket Week is still, well over a century after the picture was painted, the oldest continuing cricket festival on the planet.

    NOTICES SUBSCRIPTIONS Members are reminded that subscriptions become payable on 1 January each year. Members’ passes will be issued ahead of the start of the season, only after payment, unless the Member has subscribed to the multiple Direct Debit option. Members who have not already paid their subscriptions, are asked to do so, either via the Kent Cricket website or the Application Form within the 2021 Membership brochure. Please consider paying the subscription by Direct Debit – it saves time and trouble for you and the Club. Please do not hesitate to contact [email protected] with any queries. KENT COUNTY CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL Subject to government guidelines at the time, Annuals may be collected from the Club Shop, either at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, or at home grounds when the men’s first XI is playing. Annuals will be posted to Members who are unable to collect them upon request (£3 postage, plus the applicable Annual charge).
