Cover photo: A group of at least 40 White Stork Ciconia ciconia stopped to rest at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 10th August and stayed until the morning of 13th August when they finally managed to get airborne and continue their migration southwards. Large birds like storks try to avoid flying over large areas of water so although many thousands migrate over land to the east of Cyprus double figure flocks and larger are unusual here. This photo of the group was taken by Dave Walker on 11th August 2018.

COMPILATION OF MONTHLY CHECKLIST

The Monthly Checklist and Society News is compiled by Dave and Jan Walker.

We would love to hear from members and friends who would like to provide bird and bird watching related articles in future editions of the Monthly Checklist. Get in touch and let us know your ideas. Suggestions for topics could include ID pointers, great locations to visit, birding walks or drives or interesting personal birding experiences that you feel fellow readers would enjoy. Please contact Dave Walker 99915907 [email protected]

If you are sending photographs for inclusion in the Systematic List please send them by 18th of the month to Jane Stylianou. Every effort is made to ensure that the work of as many contributors as possible is used but inclusion cannot be guaranteed. Please send photographs in JPEG format where possible. Please send to [email protected]. Telephone: 99558953

Birdline Operated by June Neal on behalf of BirdLife Cyprus is the bird information hotline. To hear a pre- recorded message with recent interesting bird sightings and to add your own observations, please phone 00357 25 934076. KEEP UP TO DATE AND SHARE RECENT SIGHTINGS WITH THE BIRDLIFE CYPRUS GOOGLE GROUP

Continuing BirdLife Cyprus' attempts to ensure both resident and visiting birders receive up to date information on the birds being spotted on the island, we have set up a Google Group through which group members can email in their recent sightings and bird news and receive and read those of other members.

If you would like to join please click here.

Email: [email protected]

Once you are a member you can choose whether to receive all emails or check the news via the web at a time convenient to you. Visit the settings option to ensure that you get emails if you want to. It is an informal group for birders to share what is around. It cannot be checked for accuracy or be held responsible for misinformation. The group is open to both BirdLife Cyprus members and non-members alike. If you know a non-member or friend who may be interested please let them know.

Any news will also be shared with the BirdLife Cyprus BirdLine 25 934076 and the BirdLife Cyprus Recent sightings page of the website. You can also use these two resources to find out what is around if you don’t want to join the Google group.

YOUR BIRDING SIGHTINGS ARE IMPORTANT. PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO SEND THEM TO THE RECORDER Jane Stylianou Whether you go out bird watching regularly or just enjoy noting what you see when out on a walk, any record of what you see is important to help us keep an up to date database of the birds of Cyprus. Most people submit their records on a monthly basis. To be included in the Systematic List that appears in the Monthly Checklist please make sure that Jane receives your records by the 10th of the following month or are added to BirdTrack by that date. But don’t worry if you miss the deadline, your sightings will still be added to the database and be used in compiling the annual Cyprus Bird Report. On occasions, you may be asked to provide extra details of rarer birds or of those seen out of season or away from their usual locations. This is something that happens to all observers and is not a reflection on anyone’s bird watching skills! A list of the species for which a Rare Bird Report is required can be obtained from Jane. There are several ways to make sure that your records count by submitting them to the BirdLife Cyprus Recorder, Jane Stylianou who will add them to the country database: Use the Cyprus portal of BirdTrack http://blc.birdtrack.net or download our reporting excel. The recorder is happy to receive your sightings by email but where possible please try to use either BirdTrack or the Excel form. Please contact her if you have any questions [email protected] mobile telephone 99558953. Οι καταγραφές σας είναι σημαντικές για μας για να μπορέσουμε να κρατήσουμε τη βάση δεδομένων για τα πουλιά της Κύπρου ενημερωμένη. SCHEDULE OF BIRDLIFE CYPRUS FIELD MEETINGS AND ACTIVITIES

The Autumn/Winter schedule 2018

For field trips, please don’t forget your flask of coffee and sandwiches. Although their higher clearance is an advantage, 4x4s are not necessary for any of the field trips unless stated otherwise below. The schedule of field trips is drawn up well in advance of the actual dates. The schedule will only change due to an extraordinary event. However, it is sometimes necessary to assign a different leader. Please note certain field trips require pre booking with the leader to ensure there are suitable conditions at the site for the time of year and sufficient participation (These will be marked Pre Book). Participants in field trips are always advised therefore to check with the BirdLife Cyprus website in case of any late changes or cancellations. Whilst BirdLife Cyprus does not charge for attending field trips, any voluntary donation to its conservation work would be very welcome. Please present your gift to the leader on the day.

To assist new members and visiting birders, who have access to a GPS or Google Earth, to locate our ‘meeting points more easily’, we have introduced coordinates into the following schedule. Simply copy and paste the coordinates into the “Search bar” in “Google Earth” and click on it. For most instruments it is unnecessary to type in the degree and minute symbols (o & ‘) or the N and E letters.

Important Announcement: Participation in BirdLife Cyprus field meetings is at one’s own risk. BirdLife Cyprus accepts no liability or responsibility for accidents, illness, injury or loss or damage to property that might occur. Field trips require light to moderate exercise. Please contact the field trip leader for more information on difficulty, distances and terrain of a particular field trip.

FIELD MEETING - AKROTIRI PENINSULA - 25th AUGUST 2018 by Victor Tjernberg Driving towards Akrotiri on this very hot but clear Saturday morning, as each kilometre went by, the excitement grew equally so. The chances of seeing some resting Demoiselle Cranes on the Salt Lake were high since there had been observations reported from the previous day. Emma and I did a quick stop on the “Orange Hill” at Zakaki Run-off to take a sneak peek over the Salt Lake a moment before the field trip was set to start. Alas, there were no cranes on this particular day. But to make up for it, four Pallid Swift circled us and allowed us some close observations! Our bruising of not having any cranes was soothed somewhat. At the parking lot by Sylvanas, a flock of enthusiastic birders had already turned up 30 minutes before our start time and had reported that a Merlin had swept past a few minutes earlier and that actually two Demoiselle Cranes had gone past on a high altitude heading south, seen by our young talent from Austria, Filip Reiter. We stood watch here for the next hour and more brave birdwatchers arrived, battling the rising temperatures. All in all, our 20 person group stood scanning the Salt Lake for birds. Three Lesser Grey Shrikes were showing well on the telephone wires in front of us, giving us the opportunity to study the difference between 1st winter and adult plumages. We continued our search for early migrants by driving past the St. George Chapel and further on via the Gravel Pits towards Akrotiri Marsh. A short stop at the chapel gave good views of Red- backed Shrike but not much more. In Sean’s Pool a single Black-winged Stilt was resting and didn’t take any notice of all the cars lining up to get a good view of it. The drive through the Gravel Pits gave 13 Lesser Grey Shrikes -- mostly juvenile birds but a few adults as well. Three Greenshank flew up from a small puddle and a Whinchat showed nicely. The cortege of cars stopped half way to Akrotiri Marsh to view and discuss an elusive Isabelline Wheatear that showed itself good from time to time. The drive from the old Rabbit Farm to the tower hide at Akrotiri Marsh was constantly throwing juvenile European Rollers in front of us -- a total of 8 individuals amused us until the cars were parked at the tower hide. While in the tower we had very good sightings of Common Kingfisher and Garganey which was extra delightful for all the participants that brought long lenses with them! We continued our day of birding at Bishop’s Pool in hope for some ducks (and maybe a sandwich!) The sandwich would have to wait as we were met by at least 36 Grey Herons resting in the trees around the pool. A couple of Ferruginous Ducks, plenty of Little Grebes and one Northern Shoveler gave us our daily portion of ducks – the peace in the pool began to stir by the sudden appearance of a juvenile Marsh Harrier and a passing Eleonora’s Falcon. Battling the rising heat with plenty of drinking water and a bit of shade at the pool, we now had the strength to move on to our next stop, the Zakaki Run-off. We lined up on a small mound for some great views over the waders and wagtails searching for food in the shallow water. Kentish Plover, Common Ringed Plover, Little Stint and one Glossy Ibis gave us our morning’s worth. A small flock of 12 Ruff landed close by and after a few seconds we could all agree that two of our suspected Ruff were actually Curlew Sandpipers in winter plumage! Lots of shutter sounds from cameras! The now pretty warm and weary crowd of birders moved on to Zakaki Hide in hopes for a few final birds to the list of the day. We quickly heard a Water Rail screaming form inside the reeds. A Eurasian Reed Warbler gave very shy and short viewings while moving from one part of the reed to another. A very skulky Spotted Crake ran in front of a few happy birders and then decided that it would do best by stay hidden. The last bird to be added to our list of birds was a Citrine Wagtail who was caught on one lucky man’s camera when he was trying hiss luck on a group of Yellow Wagtails. All in all we managed to see and experience 47 different bird species on this hot August Saturday morning. Thank you all who participated and made this a pleasant day out birding! AKAMAS WEEKEND 7TH - 9TH SEPTEMBER 2018 Jane Stylianou This weekend has become a popular event on the BirdLife Cyprus social calendar with many familiar faces staying at the Droushia Heights Hotel for the weekend and joining with other regulars and several first timers on the annual boat trip on the Saturday morning.

European Bee-eater, Arodes 9th September. Photograph by Dinos Konis.

Those staying in Droushia enjoyed early morning birdwatches around the nearby village of Arodes on Saturday and Sunday and had great views of birds such as European Bee-eater, Black Francolin, Masked, Red-backed and Lesser Grey Shrike, Ortolan Bunting, Cyprus and Northern Wheatear, Whinchat and Willow Warbler. It was relatively quiet ‘bird-wise’ for the boat trip, which took the participants from Latchi Harbour along the coast westwards. There were just a few migrating Grey and Purple Herons around so luckily the good food and the chance to swim in the cool blue waters were adequate compensation. Thanks to Loria Phylactou and Melis Charalambides for organising an enjoyable weekend.

BIRD PHOTO QUIZ By Stavros Christodoulides PHOTO # 64

Last Month’s Quiz answer August’s mystery bird is a plain brownish grey, thin-billed, plain-faced, arboreal passerine with rather long legs and a medium length tail. All the above characteristics as well as the bird’s general jizz suggest that we are dealing with a species of warbler; a large, widespread old world super-family of rather undistinguished, very small to medium sized passerines. The family is well represented on our island with many species occurring as passage migrants, fewer as resident, and a handful as either winter visitors or summer breeding migrants. Key to their identification is their size, general shape and colouration. We can easily rule out a number of species including Cetti’s Warbler (rounded head profile, reddish colouration), Zitting Cisticola (streaked upperparts, short tail and bill) and all species of Sylvia (large head, strong bill), all Phylloscopus (rounded head, short tail and bill) and Locustella (very long undertail coverts, rounded tail) Warblers. Our bird therefore belongs to the Reed Warblers and their allies, a family of birds that can be very tricky to separate. In Cyprus, the family is represented by 3 genera, Acrocephalus, Hippolais and Iduna. They are strongly related and some species have been moved around between the genera. We can immediately rule out the three streaked Acrocephalus warblers (Sedge, Moustached and vagrant Aquatic). Acrocephalus warblers show long undertail coverts and warmer plumage tones so we can also rule out the remaining species (Reed, Great Reed and Marsh Warbler). Icterine Warbler can also be excluded as this shows strong yellowish tones. We are left with three species; Olive- tree, Upcher’s and Eastern Olivaceous Warbler. The three are quite similar but the two larger species show cold grey plumage, a strong bill, long primaries and a pale wing flash while our bird is brownish grey, shows a long, slim bill and no white wing flash making it an Eastern Olivaceous Warbler, a common and widespread breeding summer visitor.

A-Z of Cyprus Birdwatching Alarm Calls – Alien Predators By June Neal If you wish to learn more about a topic highlight the link to a web page (underlined blue text) and copy it into your web browser. Alarm call Many species of small birds face an ever-present danger from predators and they use alarm calls that members of their own species and other species will react to. Some birds are reported to ‘have even evolved different calls for particular situations’. Eurasian Blackbirds’, ♂ Μαυρόπουλλος (♀ Μαυρότζικλα), Turdus merula alarm calls for humans, a cat or a hawk are all different. Hayman and Burton also comment that ‘Some species have white areas on their wings and tails which are clearly visible as they fly away from danger, so warning other birds in the area.’ The web site ‘xeno canto, Sharing bird sounds from around the world’ is an excellent resource for listening to many types of bird sound, including alarm calls. Jeffery Boswall, natural history broadcaster, has a web site which gives some examples. References: Hayman, P. & Burton, P. (1986) The Birdlife of Britain and Europe https://www.xeno-canto.org/ https://www.bl.uk/the-language-of-birds/articles/alarm-and-mobbing-calls Albinism This is a genetic mutation that prevents melanin and other pigments from being deposited normally on feathers, resulting in pale or muted colours on the entire bird. Albinistic birds have pink eyes because without melanin in the body, the only colour in the eyes comes from the blood vessels behind the eyes. The abnormal white colouring which is caused by the absence of pigmentation in birds, eg a white Eurasian Blackbird, ♂ Μαυρόπουλλος (♀ Μαυρότζικλα), Turdus merula References: Hayman, P. & Burton, P. Albumen

‘An egg has four basic structures: the yolk and its associated membranes; the germinal disc; the albumen (white); and the shell and its associated membranes. Each component performs specific functions in the development of the embryo.’ The above is an extract from the web site for Petcha.com which gives a comprehensive explanation of the components of birds’ eggs and explanations on colouring, shape and shell thickness. Albumen has been extensively studies and has provided much taxonomically valuable information. References: https://www.petcha.com/the-bird-egg-inside-out/

Alien Predators Creatures not found naturally in an ecosystem are termed ‘alien predators’. Often such predators are introduced by man – stray cats, rats, dogs – that predate on birds’ eggs in Cyprus, mainly ground nesting species. Such predation will affect breeding densities, sometimes causing subsequent devastation. This is the most important cause of extinction among island birds. References: Stylianou, J. MONTHLY WATERBIRD COUNT August 2018 Yiannis Christodoulides

The BirdLife Cyprus waterbirds monitoring programme has been running since 2005 and covers around 70 wetlands and other waterbird sites around the island. All sites are covered at least every January (mid-winter count) and every May (breeding season count), while the more important sites are also covered in March, September and November. Key Important Bird Area (IBA) wetlands such as the island’s two salt lakes, which attract large numbers of birds, are covered on a monthly basis. The monitoring programme is based on the voluntary work of a team of dedicated and experienced recorders and preliminary results are presented in the Monthly Checklist. For August, 6 recorders covered 17 wetlands (including one coastal site) across the island where 1441 birds, of 47 different species were recorded. The most abundant species was the Greater Flamingo with 419 individuals. The second most abundant species was the Mallard with 246 individuals followed by the Kentish Plover with just over 205 individuals. These 3 species combined make up for more than half the waterbirds recorded this month. The wetland holding the most birds as well as the most species, was Larnaka Sewage Works with 867 individuals from 25 different species. Akrotiri Lady’s Mile was second in recorded individuals with 235 and Oroklini Lake third with 104. All the other sites had less than 100 individuals each. Oroklini Lake was also second in species abundance. Mavrokolymbos Dam only had one recorded individual, a Common Sandpiper.
