AUSTIN COUNTY THE LOCAL NEWS 2021 COLE McNANNA [email protected]

In the May 1 general election, Austin County voters will determine winners in races for positions on such councils as Sealy City Council, Sealy ISD Board of Trustees, Wallis City Council and San Felipe City Council. The latter two municipalities will also determine a mayor. Early voting runs from April 19 to 27 and for this Austin County Election Guide, The Sealy News provided the same questions to each candidate with the same deadline to submit written answers. Some elected to also be interviewed on camera on The Sealy News’ Facebook page and all those who submitted written answers before the deadline were included in this section. No edits were made to the candidates’ written responses. Stay tuned to The Sealy News for election results online (SealyNews.com), on social media (@TheSealyNews) and in the print edition. CITY OF WALLIS CITY COUNCIL

Melissa McFarland City Council

Do you think the existing council is going in the right 1. direction to benefit the people of the city of Wallis? For many years our current council has been doing a great job with limited resources and funds. However, we must research other avenues to meet the financial needs of our town. Growth is inevitable and we must plan accordingly for the future.

What do you hope to accomplish as a city council member? 2. My greatest desire as I serve on council is to involve the citizens in our community and offer programs and services that would benefit them. Our community thirsts for such transparency and involvement. Allowing citizen input gives the budget more credibility and entices citizens to support their government’s goals. Public hearings, town hall meetings and open houses are excellent venues to survey the public’s priorities and what they’re willing to invest additional dollars in.

How have you already been volunteering or serving in the city? 3. I am an active member of the Brazos Band Boosters. I have served a member of the Executive Board of the Band Boosters for the past 2 years as Secretary.

How would you determine your budget priorities? 4. I feel in order to have a responsible budget plan we must start with the Big Picture. Most local municipalities and governments need to have transparency and clarity not only on their financial goals and strategy, but also on their vision with common goals.

When you hear about something that concerns you in the city, what steps would you take 5. to see that this concern is resolved? I will research the problem and work toward a solution to handle accordingly by discussing with council to meet a common goal.

If you are not elected, what would you do to try to help work on ideas or issues that are 6. important to you? Attend council meetings, reach out to city leaders and also volunteer for committees to help our city and its citizens for potential growth in our community.

Jeffrey Davidson Alderperson Do you think the existing council is going in the right direction to benefit the people of the city? 1. I can’t answer that because there is no communication as to a direction or any benefit. It does not appear there is any strategic plan or direction. The public is not invited, to be involved, or surveyed to their community needs. Over the past decade, the only items the town can attest to accomplishing is to the changing of street signs, digging a big hole at FM 1458 & I-10, refurbishing a river boat dock, and updating community court. There are snippets mentioned during the monthly meeting of ideas but the public is not invited to details or feedback What do you hope to accomplish as an alderperson? 2. I would like to survey our community to what they believe should be our town’s direction, initiatives and future … a strategic plan. Examples to prioritize is streets/maintenance, public infrastructure (currently none), storm drainage, policing, fire, beautification as well as any others that might be identified as community needs. Any direction is better than none if it is what the community would like to see accomplished and is willing to commit. A large issue in the town is that the town operates its decision making in secret. True or Not, I would like there to be full transparency in the budgeting and decision making process, inviting feedback. The town website is antiquated to 1985 standards with little information of value, only a few phone numbers, forms and board minutes. It could be utilized greatly in this process. How have you already been volunteering or serving in the city? 3. I have not, not aware of any opportunities or initiatives current or past. However, I would love to begin one of cleaning up our town, meeting neighbors and learning how to help neighbors in need. How would you determine your budget priorities? 4. First, I would work to gain a clear understanding of our revenues and expended. What long term obligations do we have? Is there any potential of near term increase in revenue? It would be hard to make any bold announcements without these prerequisites. Second, determine if the council has any current projects in place and a time frame for those to come to realization. Third, begin a process of making prioritizing initiatives for town enhancements as most requested by our constituents. Ask for input from our community as to their needs or ideas for enhancing our towns to begin to establish a future priority. Fourth, develop a strategic plan to address those needs and publish monthly on our website our town goals, projected dates for accomplishments and the current status of undertakings. When you hear about something that concerns you in the city, what steps would you take to see that this concern is resolved? 5. This is a broad question being it could involve so many different issues. If you are not elected, what would you do to try to help work on ideas or issues that are important to you? 6. Openness is the most important item followed by town constituent concerns. The only way to resolve these initially is to make our town citizens aware of status and direction. A first step would be our website. Second, pursue a strategic plan for our future and make that known to our citizens.
