STEWARDSHIP BULLETIN BITS: November 24, 2019 - Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe “….giving thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light.” (Colossians 1:12) God wants us to be happy! Instead of looking at the Ten Commandments as being restrictive and telling us what we can’t do, look at them as guides for living a joy-filled and peaceful life. Most of our problems arise when we put our own needs first or spend most of our time trying to acquire “things.” Instead, try putting God first in all things. Ask Him how He wants you to use your gifts.

Brother of Simon Peter, you heard John the Baptist say: St. Andrew—Apostle “Behold the Lamb of God,” and you chose to follow Jesus. November 29 Leaving your nets, you became a successful fisher of souls.

Lover of the Crucified Christ, you too were crucified like him.

Teach us to live and suffer for Him and to win many souls for Christ. Amen.

Andrew the Apostle (Greek: Ἀνδρέας Andreas), also known as Saint Andrew, was an apostle of Jesus. The name "Andrew" (Greek: manly, brave, from ἀνδρεία, Andreia, "manhood, valour"), like other Greek names, appears to have been common among the Jews, Christians, and other Hellenized people of Judea. Both he and his brother Peter were fishermen by trade, hence the tradition that Jesus called them to be his disciples by saying that he will make them "fishers of men" (Greek: ἁλιεῖς ἀνθρώπων, halieis anthrōpōn). In the Gospel of Matthew (Matt 4:18–22) and in the Gospel of Mark (Mark 1:16–20) Simon Peter and Andrew were both called together to become disciples of Jesus and "fishers of men". These narratives record that Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, observed Simon and Andrew fishing, and called them to discipleship. Subsequently, in the gospels, Andrew is referred to as being present on some important occasions as one of the disci- ples more closely attached to Jesus. Andrew told Jesus about the boy with the loaves and fishes (John 6:8), and when Philip wanted to tell Jesus about certain Greeks seeking Him, he told Andrew first (John 12:20–22). Andrew was present at the Last Supper. Andrew was one of the four disciples who came to Jesus on the Mount of Olives to ask about the signs of Jesus' re- turn at the "end of the age". Andrew is the patron saint of several countries and cities including: Barbados, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Ukraine, Sar- zana,[1] Pienza[34] and Amalfi in Italy, Esgueira in Portugal, Luqa in Malta, Parañaque in the Philippines and Patras in Greece. He was also the patron saint of Prussia and of the Order of the Golden Fleece. He is considered the founder and the first bish- op of the Church of Byzantium and is consequently the patron saint of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. The of Scotland (and consequently the Union Flag and those of some of the former colonies of the British Empire) feature Saint Andrew's cross. The saltire is also the flag of Tenerife, the former flag of and the Russian Navy Ensign. The Confederate flag also features a saltire commonly referred to as a St Andrew's cross, although its designer, Wil- liam Porcher Miles, said he changed it from an upright cross to a saltire so that it would not be a religious symbol but merely a heraldic device. The Alabama flag also shows that device. The feast of Andrew is observed on November 30 in the Eastern and Western churches, and is the national day of Scot- land. In the traditional liturgical books of the Catholic Church, this feast is the first feast day in the Proper of Saints.
