  • ESL Announces European Grassroots Initiative Expanding Path to Pro League for CS:GO
Jun 26, 2017 16:00 BST ESL Announces European Grassroots Initiative Expanding Path to Pro League for CS:GO The world’s largest esports company, ESL, is today proud to reveal a new initiative to expand its path for aspiring Counter-Strike: Global-Offensive (CS:GO) players to rise through the ranks from the National Championship level onto the amateur ranks in order to qualify for the largest CS:GO league in the world, the ESL Pro League. Starting with ESEA Season 26, the winners of the ESL UK Premiership and the ESL Mistrzostwa Polski, the official national leagues of the UK & Ireland and Poland respectively, will claim a place to compete in the Mountain Dew League (MDL). This unique partnership provides a clear pathway for CS:GO players to progress from amateur ranks to compete on the world stage linking the national leagues to the Pro League through MDL. The investment in the path-to-pro system will continue from Season 27 with ESL’s French, Spanish and German leagues providing qualification spots to the MDL, establishing ESL’s national leagues as the leading grassroots CS:GO leagues in each territory. The already-established ESEA League will continue to run alongside this new initiative. To achieve this, ESL is set to move its European National Championships to be part of ESEA’s system creating promotion spots up to MDL, the only league that feeds directly into the Pro League. The team that wins the National Championship will qualify for the MDL, creating a clear path from there to the Pro League.

KARELIA University of Applied Sciences Degree Programme In Business Information Technology Elmeri Telimaa Hacking Detection in Unreal Engine 4 Thesis May 2021 THESIS February 2021 Business Information Technology Tikkarinne 9 80200 JOENSUU FINLAND + 358 13 260 600 (switchboard) Author (s) Elmeri Telimaa Title Hacking Detection in Unreal Engine 4 Commissioned by - Abstract The goal of the thesis is to find an integrated tool within Unreal Engine 4 for detecting and combating cheating, that is quick to implement in a project. To achieve this goal, a prototype game was created and speedhacked. A counter for this hack was then implemented. Cheating in online games results in worse experience for the other players playing against the cheater, who then take their business elsewhere. This has a negative impact on both the game developer’s reputation and revenue. The speedhack used manipulates time on a client, making the user move more than intended. The detection method included within Unreal Engine 4 compares the time sent by the client to the time of the server to determine if there is discrepancy in the values. Using these values, we can determine if the client is speedhacking. The used detection method detected the hack and kicked the offending client out of the server. The method is easy to implement in a new project. Esports Spectatorship in Australia 2 Networked Society Institute, University of Melbourne Executive summary Esports – the organised, professional and spectated play of competitive digital games – has evolved into a massive global industry in the past decade. Boasting significant market value and broad global audience reach, esports is driven by modern highspeed internet infrastructure and live-streaming platforms like Twitch.tv. However, esports has yet to take hold as an industry in Australia, largely due to geographical isolation from major esports regions compounded by Australia’s traditionally lacklustre network infrastructure. Although the esports industry relies on various revenue streams, sponsorship and advertising deals provide the industry’s main source of funding. Teams, tournaments and esports organisations of various sizes are sponsored by major international companies like Intel, Samsung and Mercedes-Benz.

  • Chapter 8 – Discussion
Constructing authentic esports spectatorship: An ethnography David Jian-Jia Cumming ORCID: 0000-0002-0121-476X Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy October 2020 School of Computing and Information Systems Melbourne School of Engineering The University of Melbourne Abstract Formally organised competitive video gaming, commonly known as esports, has seen a rapid rise in popularity over the past decade as a form of spectator entertainment. Thousands of fans pack grand stadia across the globe to watch their favourite esports teams and players compete for extravagant prize pools, while millions watch online remotely in their homes via livestreaming platforms like Twitch. Unlike conventional sports however, there is no inherent need for esports to take place in any particular physically-situated site like a stadium. The computerised nature of esports lends the practice a perceived placeless quality. No matter where an esports event is situated, be it in a stadium or networked across homes, the digital synthetic environments in which players’ avatars compete remain the same as objective constructs of code and graphical assets. If the perspective of watching esports is largely the same across different sites by virtue of its inherent mediation, then why is esports spectated beyond the comfort of the home? The aim of this thesis is to address this conundrum by exploring the experiences esports spectatorship in varying contexts.
