arts Article Lithuanian Synagogues: From the First Descriptions to Systematic Research Vilma Gradinskaite Independent scholar, 05224 Vilnius, Lithuania; [email protected] Received: 4 March 2020; Accepted: 15 May 2020; Published: 21 May 2020 Abstract: The article presents an analysis of the development stages of synagogue research methodology in Lithuania during the four major historical periods of the country—Lithuania in the Russian Empire (1795–1918), Vilnius Region in the interwar period and the independent Republic of Lithuania (1918–1940), the Soviet period (1940–1990), and the independent Republic of Lithuania restored in 1990. Each chapter of the article deals with the issues of synagogue research, heritage conservation and management, while the part about the restored independent Republic of Lithuania and modern days includes topical issues related to synagogue restoration, commemoration and putting them into operation. The study uses two different sources: archival materials and publications. Written sources and publications are reviewed in chronological order and start from the end of the 18th century. The study employs several research methods—the historical descriptive method, the comparative method and the analysis method. Introduction The article presents several fields of study: (1) a review of the first descriptions of synagogues in Lithuania; (2) an analysis of the development stages of synagogue research methodology in Lithuania; and (3) a brief reference to synagogue restoration, renovation, rebuilding, commemoration and putting into operation—topics which are currently particularly live in Lithuania today. It is not possible to understand the existing trends in synagogue research in Lithuania without considering the country’s past—the times of the Russian Empire, the interwar period and the Soviet period. -

Chapter 1 Everyday Life of Jews in Mariampole, Lithuania 1 (1894–1911) INTRODUCTION The urge to discover one‘s roots is universal. This desire inspired me to reconstruct stories about my ancestors in Mariampole, Lithuania, for my grandchildren and generations to come. These stories tell the daily lives and culture of Jewish families who lived in northeastern Europe within Russian-dominated Lithuania at the turn of the twentieth century. The town name has been spelled in various ways. In YIVO, the formal Yiddish transliteration, the town name would be ―Maryampol.‖ In Lithuanian, the name is Marijampolė (with a dot over the ―e‖). In Polish, the name is written as Marjampol, and in Yiddish with Hebrew characters, the name is written from and pronounced ―Mariampol.‖ In English spelling, the town name ‖מאַריאַמפּאָל― right to left as is ―Marijampol.‖ From 1956 until the end of Soviet control in 1989, the town was called ―Kapsukas,‖ after one of the founders of the Lithuanian Communist party. The former name, Mariampole, was restored shortly before Lithuania regained independence.2 For consistency, I refer to the town in the English-friendly Yiddish, ―Mariampole.‖3 My paternal grandparents, Dvore Shilobolsky/Jacobson4 and Moyshe Zundel Trivasch, moved there around 1886 shortly after their marriage. They had previously lived in Przerośl, a town about 35 miles southwest of Mariampole. Both Przerośl and Mariampole were part of the Pale of Settlement, a place where the Russian empire forced its Jews to live 1791–1917. It is likely that Mariampole promised to offer Jews a better life than the crowded conditions of the section of the Pale where my grandparents had lived. -

eSharp Issue 20: New Horizons A Fresh Perspective on the History of Hasidic Judaism Eva van Loenen (University of Southampton) Introduction In this article, I shall examine the history of Hasidic Judaism, a mystical,1 ultra-orthodox2 branch of Judaism, which values joyfully worshipping God’s presence in nature as highly as the strict observance of the laws of Torah3 and Talmud.4 In spite of being understudied, the history of Hasidic Judaism has divided historians until today. Indeed, Hasidic Jewish history is not one monolithic, clear-cut, straightforward chronicle. Rather, each scholar has created his own narrative and each one is as different as its author. While a brief introduction such as this cannot enter into all the myriad divergences and similarities between these stories, what I will attempt to do here is to incorporate and compare an array of different views in order to summarise the history of Hasidism and provide a more objective analysis, which has not yet been undertaken. Furthermore, my historical introduction in Hasidic Judaism will exemplify how mystical branches of mainstream religions might develop and shed light on an under-researched division of Judaism. The main focus of 1 Mystical movements strive for a personal experience of God or of his presence and values intuitive, spiritual insight or revelationary knowledge. The knowledge gained is generally ‘esoteric’ (‘within’ or hidden), leading to the term ‘esotericism’ as opposed to exoteric, based on the external reality which can be attested by anyone. 2 Ultra-orthodox Jews adhere most strictly to Jewish law as the holy word of God, delivered perfectly and completely to Moses on Mount Sinai. -

WHEN CROOKS (AND GUMSHOES) TALK YIDDISH: On Babel, Singer and Chabon Lee Williams Lecturer, Department of Languages and Literature Touro College South Michael Chabon’s bestselling novel The Yiddish Policemen’s Union (2007) extends the literary sub-genre depicting Jewish gangsters into the twenty-first century and provides the principal focus of my paper. By the late 1800s, fiction writers were portraying or hinting at a Yiddish- spouting criminal class within the Diaspora. Then, in the 1920s, Isaac Babel’s The Odessa Stories related the larger-than-life figure of Benya Krik, an extortion and protection king. Those tales were written in Russian, but with Yiddish syntax and jargon obtruding, a device recently employed by Chabon in English to great effect. The gangster theme continued with Isaac Bashevis Singer’s Yarme and Keyle, serialized during the 50s under pseudonym in Forverts, a New York Yiddish daily. A chapter from this stark portrait of the Warsaw-Buenos Aires white slave trade has recently emerged in English – untouched by Singer – in a volume titled The Hidden Isaac Bashevis Singer, edited by Seth Wolitz at the University of Texas. Generally, Singer stuck a hand into his “translations,” seizing the opportunity to de-polemicize the Yiddish texts for an American and an eventual world audience, a redactive strategy that arguably aided in his garnering the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1978. Most recently, in The Yiddish Policemen’s Union, Chabon fashions a new playground for yarmulke-balancing mafiosos. He situates them among an enclave of three million Jewish exiles along the rugged Alaskan coastline, a counter-historical proposition that assumes Israel’s defeat in its early war with surrounding Arab nations. -

“Socialism in One Country” Promoting National Identity Based on Class Identification IVAN SZPAKOWSKI The Russian Empire of the Romanovs spanned thousands of miles from the Baltic to the Pacific, with a population of millions drawn from dozens of ethnic groups. Following the Russian Civil War, the Bolsheviks inherited the problem of holding together such a heterogeneous body. At the same time, they were forced to uphold Marxist ideology demanding worldwide revolution of the proletariat while facing the reality that despite the turmoil following the First World War no such revolution was forthcoming. In 1924 the rising Joseph Stalin, along with Nikolai Bukharin, devised the theory of “Socialism in One Country” which would become the solution to many of these problems facing the Bolsheviks. First of all, it proclaimed the ability of socialism to succeed in the Soviet Union alone, without foreign aid. Additionally, it marked a change from Lenin’s policy of self-determination for the Soviet Union’s constituent nations to Stalin’s policy of a compulsory unitary state. These non-Russian ethnics were systematically and firmly incorporated into the Soviet Union by the promotion of a proletariat class mentality. The development of the theory and policy of “Socialism in One Country” thus served to forge the unitary national identity of the Soviet Union around the concept of common Soviet class identity. The examination of this policy’s role in building a new form of national identity is dependant on a variety of sources, grouped into several subject areas. First, the origin of the term “Socialism in One Country,” its original meaning and its interpretation can be found in the speeches and writings of prominent contemporary communist leaders, chief among them: Stalin and Trotsky. -

A number of towns now in Belarus and Poland but with records in Lithuanian Archives also fall under our aegis. Looking forward, LitvakSIG will be translating more records from the Lithuanian State Central Archives, including country-wide lists such as: Emigration to Eretz Israel; Evacuees to the USSR during World War II; Jewish Volunteers in the Lithuanian Army; JDC Lithuanian Survivors List. LitvakSIG is an independent organization whose database and discussion group are hosted by JewishGen. Each organization has its own, separate administrative and fundraising structure. Brown INTRODUCTION We Americans are either descendants of immigrants or have come ourselves to North America from somewhere else. Before 1825, fewer than 10,000 immigrants entered the United States annually. By the early twentieth century America was receiving an annual average of more than one million immigrants, two-thirds of whom cane from Eastern and Southern Europe. The men and women who arrived in the United States in the century after 1820 brought with them discontent with their status at home and the desire to improve their conditions. Some entered under the pressure of great disasters in their native homeland. Others were moved by the force of more gradual economic and social change. America’s need for labor and the widespread belief that the United States was a land of opportunity and a refuge for the oppressed were principally responsible for America’s last great migratory wave, which began in the middle of the nineteenth century. The newcomers often found themselves in conflict—sometimes they seemed to take jobs away from the earlier inhabitants. In the cities, they drifted into the slum areas, and seemed partially responsible for the rise in crime and taxes. They appeared frequently as clients of charitable agencies. But the immigrants also made a decided contribution to our civilization. Their labor was an important factor in America’s economic expansion and development into a major industrial and world power. -
