dear smr community, I want to share an update with you on our strategic plan. First, thank you to our parents, faculty, board of directors and our students for responding to the surveys during the fall of 2017. The results of the survey, as well as your comments, were communicated to the board of directors during a four-day retreat at the end of January. A facilitator from Independent School Management guided the sessions. You made it clear that our Catholic identity and Xaverian values are vitally important to the culture of our community as we look to the future. Parents, you have affirmed what St. Mary’s Ryken’s non-negotiables are: an excellent, academic college preparatory program for students; a Catholic, faith-based education in a caring, value-centered community; a faculty and staff who are committed to a culture of learning and to the mission of St. Mary’s Ryken; a safe campus environment where the size of our school community and the size of classes is not sacrificed. You encouraged us to be imaginative and creative in our future plans. The strategic plan is an ambitious vision for our future. Along with the work our school community is completing for Middle States re-accreditation this fall, we have been called to take a look at our past, our challenges and the exciting opportunities that exist for the future. With new programs that focus on STEM, health and wellness, and after-school and summer activities, community partnerships that enhance internship and job-shadowing opportunities, and new facilities that benefit our students and the Southern Maryland community, the strategic plan is the cornerstone of our foundation for expanding our prevailing strengths and being open to the endless possibilities for the future. The Portrait of a Graduate (referenced later in this document) calls us to take action immediately on some initiatives while we know that others will evolve over time. Our parents, alumni, past parents of our alumni, and faculty have all contributed to the great success of our past. As we embrace the future with you and all of our stakeholders, together we will carry out the strategic plan. Sincerely,

Mary Joy Hurlburt

A Time to Remember

Members from the Class of 1988 gathered at the end of October to celebrate their 30th reunion during Homecoming Weekend — a weekend of golf, happy hours, dancing and seeing old friends. Truly a joyful celebration filled with hugs, laughter and stories that began with “remember when…” But when it came time to plan for their reunion last year, members of the reunion committee were facing tragedy. Three classmates had passed away within two months — two of them on the same day following Thanksgiving and a third just weeks into the new year. As many gathered during this time for funerals, they reflected on the frailty of life and how their class had lost too many classmates so early in life — nine members deceased before the age of 48. Unimaginable. But the class turned pain into beauty, into remembrance, into legacy. David Bowes and Jef Graves came to St. Mary’s Ryken and asked how the Class of 1988 could dedicate a memorial to their classmates. With the Donnie Williams Center opening in 2019, SMR President Mary Joy Hurlburt suggested they dedicate a cozy green space surrounded by trees and flowers with a bench to soothe the soul — a place to find peace, a place to remember, not just high school days, but the friendships and the people who have touched their lives; a place that will continue to flourish and leave its own indelible mark at St. Mary’s Ryken. Thank you to all of the generous donors for creating a living memorial in honor of your classmates. If you haven’t made a contribution yet, “The greatest gift of you still have time! Mail a check to the SMR/Development Office or life is friendship, and visit https://www.smrhs.org/MakeAGift to make a gift online. I have received it.” —Hubert H. Humphrey

2017–18 Annual Report 39 Giving Back to SMR is a Worthy Commitment for the Jarboe Family

Christian ’13, Luke ’16, Tom ’87, “As teenagers we recognized that we were fortunate to attend SMR, and Shannon ’87 and Nick ’11 over the last 30 years we frequently reflected upon our SMR experiences and gratitude for that opportunity. Our commitment to SMR increased with the attendance of our sons, who are 2011, 2013 and 2016 graduates. We support the school’s Annual Fund because we recognize and value that the experience of attending SMR increases Catholic identity while providing college preparatory-level learning. SMR is a unique treasure!” —Tom and Shannon Jarboe, Class of 1987

Thank you to all of the donors who helped strengthen the financial future of St. Mary’s Ryken.

Nurturing extraordinary students and faculty takes extraordinary resources! Donations to the St. Mary’s Ryken Annual Fund enriches the lives of each Knight through the important work of preparing leaders, growing spiritually through faith and service, creating art in all its glorious forms and providing a challenging 21st century curriculum. Your support gives us the resources to be able to say YES as opportunities arise to provide for our students, faculty and campus.

When you make a gift to the SMR Annual Fund, you can earmark it for a particular area: arts, Campus Ministry, humanities, professional development, or tuition assistance, to name a few! The amount you are able to give may vary, and the areas you choose to support may change. But your commitment to giving every year provides the sustainable base of support that allows us to make a difference every day.

Help us to answer YES when we are called to be extraordinary! You can make a difference today with the enclosed envelope or visit our website at www.smrhs.org/Support. Your gift, no matter what the size, will have a positive impact.
