Guided the strategic plan for the Sport and Recreation Management Program since 2008. This included creating the direction, design and implementation of all Program courses. Administered all Program based student registration, retention, and recruitment efforts. Supervised student internship, community outreach, alumni relations, and experiential learning opportunities in order to maximize student learning experiences. As a result of these efforts, the recognition and value of the Marian University’s Sports and Recreation Management degree has been enhanced within the industry and within our campus community. Additional duties included the teaching of four undergraduate classes each semester, taught four additional courses on an overload basis, reviewing and selecting relevant course textbooks as well as creating student leadership opportunities. Served on various university and school committees such as the Athletics Committee, the Library Committee, the Health Care Administration Program Director search, the Nomination Committee, the Multi-Purpose Facility Committee, along with leading the WAICU student financial aid lobbying effort on behalf of the University. Advised several student organizations, including the Sport and Recreation Management Club, Students in Free Enterprise, Business Club and the Black Student Union. Significant Accomplishments (2012-13): • The SRM Program Director earned Marian University tenure during the Spring, 2013 academic semester. • The SRM Program Director was appointed to serve on the International Sports Law Journal Board of Editors during 2012-13 academic year. • The SRM Program Director served as one of two Marian Commencement diploma distributors during the May, 2013 graduation ceremony. • In conjunction with the Marian University Social Innovation Committee, the Program assisted in creating and organizing Marian’s 2013-14 “Growing Marian” initiative. Specifically, approximately thirty Program students will cultivate, and market fresh produce grown on campus. This initiative will provide healthy and local food choices for the Marian and Fond du Lac communities. Community partners include Habitat For Humanity and Fond du Lac’s “Reducing Obesity” program. • The student Sport and Recreation Management Club, in conjunction with Marian University’s Activities Committee, successfully organized the Spring, 2013 Bradley Center Milwaukee Bucks game event for approximately 50 Marian University faculty, staff, administrators and students. • The SRM Program Director served on a School of Nursing student appeal committee regarding an individual request to continue nursing studies. This adjudication occurred in January, 2013. • The SRM Program Director provided legal insight and practical guidance to Marian University’s Grievance Committee during the 2012-13 academic year. Similarly, the Director provided legal insight and practical guidance to Marian University faculty members relative to their grievances before the Committee. • The SRM program organized and executed Marian University’s annual ice hockey “Pink Out” fundraising event held in January, 2013 at Fond du Lac’s Blue Line Center. This event raised approximately $2,500 to pay for breast cancer screening tests on behalf of local indigent women. Further, the SRM Program’s contribution was recognized on Marian’s website, its alumni magazine and in the Fond du Lac Reporter. James T. Gray Page 2 • The SRM Program Director served as a moderator during Marian University’s Spring, 2013 Academic Symposium. The Director was joined by Mike Mentzer, Retired Editor of the Fond du Lac Reporter, Bill Lamb, Chief, Fond du Lac Police Department, and Allen Buechel, Fond du Lac County Executive. • The SRM Program Director, during the Spring, 2013 semester, delivered a presentation before approximately 30 people during the annual Marian University Student Leadership Conference in April, 2013. The topic addressed identifying opportunities, developing one’s belief system and leadership. • The SRM Program Director, on an ongoing basis, held student resume review and interview strategy sessions during the 2012 Fall and 2013 Spring semesters. • The SRM Program organized and executed Marian University’s “Midnight Madness” event to benefit the men’s and women’s basketball teams regarding spectator attendance and general awareness of its teams on campus. This event was held in October, 2012 and raised approximately $2,000.00 to benefit Marian University athletics. • The SRM Club successfully organized a Milwaukee Brewers/Pittsburgh Pirates outing held at Miller Park in April, 2012. Approximately 80 Marian faculty, staff, administrators, students attended this event. The beneficiary of this event was the Business School’s student scholarship fund where about $200 was raised. • SRM students organized two “Flash Mob” dances during the Fall and Spring semester Marian University men’s basketball games. As a special endeavor, the SRM Program partnered with Fond du Lac’s Big Brothers/Big Sisters as it pertained to our Flash Mob dances. Approximately 30 children from Big Brothers/Big Sisters joined about 30 Marian students during each dance event. • The SRM Program Director served as chairman of the Marian University Faculty Athletics Committee. Meetings were organized to evaluate student-athlete class attendance policies, the handling of professor/student-athlete disputes concerning course grades and class assignments as well as the selection of the male and female student athlete of the year award recipients. The Program Director continues to serve as the Chairman of this Committee for the upcoming 2013-14 academic year. In addition, the Program Director served as a member of the University’s Library Committee during the past academic year. • The Sport and Recreation Management program invited a series of guest speakers to address our SRM students. These speakers included Jan Doleschal, a high school sport expert, to discuss secondary school sport facility safety and risk management, Anne Wall, an Olympic Games marketer, to discuss Sport and Recreation Marketing, Bill Zirdt, to evaluate Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury, Ashly Garner to discuss resume drafting and interview preparation, as well as a Illinois State University roundtable seminar that discussed SRM internship opportunities and career options. This event was held in Bloomington, Illinois. Eight SRM students joined the Program Director for this event. • The SRM Program Director delivered a career development presentation to about 30 Marian University Business Club students in April, 2013. • In conjunction with Marian alum, Matt Pena, approximately 30 Marian students participated in a fundraising event to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee. Our students were able to donate approximately $10,000 in new and used sport and recreation equipment. • The SRM Program Director served as a faculty advisor to the SRM, and Enactus clubs. • Eight SRM students attended two GMR sport and recreation marketing events held in New Berlin, Wisconsin in order to learn about internship and career opportunities. These events were held in October, 2012 as well as April, 2013. • Approximately 80 SRM and Business Law students attended the Marian Academic Symposium relative to the issue of incivility within American society. This event was held on campus during April, 2013. • Program Director taught 12 courses and completed 12 course preparations. • Baseball Pink Out. Approximately 20 SRM students organized the first ever Baseball Pink Out events during April, 2013. Approximately, $700 was raised to benefit indigent Fond du Lac women who need breast cancer screening. • Gary Kunath Leadership event. Approximately 200 Marian students spent an evening with leadership expert, Gary Kunath, to learn about his approach to leadership and management. In addition, SRM students raised $500 from this event to benefit Fond du Lac’s Habitat For Humanity. Similarly, in conjunction with Professor Tom Wallestad graphic art students, original artwork was created and James T. Gray Page 3 • printed as posters to assist with marketing and promotion of Kunath’s presentation. One Marian graphic art student now has his work displayed relative to the promotion of Gary Kunath’s presentation to Google which was held in June, 2013. • The SRM Program Director, James Gray, bestowed the annual Men and Women’s Student-Athlete of the Year award during the Marian University student recognition banquet held April, 2013. • Approximately 15 Marian University students successfully delivered an annual report, along with a 15 minute oral presentation during the Spring, 2013 Enactus Regional competition held in Chicago, Illinois. Professors Scott Dell and James Gray served as co-advisors during this competition. • SRM upper classmen and class women have agreed to visit with their fellow freshmen and sophomore students during the Fall, 2013 semester “Introduction to Sport and Recreation Management” course in order to share their experience and approach to academic achievement within the classroom environment. • 15 Legal Issues in Sport and Recreation Management students, under

The School Sisters of Saint Francis established the Sacred Heart Sanitarium under the guidance of their foundress, Venerable Mother M. Alexia Hoell. Built on land adjacent to the School Sisters of Saint Francis St Joseph Convent, the sanitarium was located at 1545 South Layton Boulevard and opened December 1893. It would provide a vehicle to further the Sisters’ philosophy of ministering to the health needs of others. Alverno’s Nursing Tradition - The Sacred Heart Years Sisters, trained in the methods of nursing and ministering to the sick, would serve as the sanitarium’s nursing instructors. They would teach the young women entering the religious life and prepare them for the field of nursing. Mother M. Alexia was instrumental in bringing hydrotherapy techniques used in Europe to the sanitarium. Doctors were appointed to assist the Sisters in the nurses’ training process. Expansion and reorganization of the sanitarium’s medical therapy regime took place in 1902. Additional doctors, specializing in specific diseases and disorders, were appointed to the staff to help with the increased patient load.
