The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of the Government of under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides opportunities to students of 11th & 12th at +2 Board level, students of Technical Institution and UG and

 PG students of colleges/universities of India to take part in various government led community service activities & programmes. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience to young students in delivering community service. Since the inception of the NSS in 1969, the number of students has increased from 40,000 to over 3.8 million as per the estimate at the end of March 2018. Students in various universities, colleges and Institutions of higher learning have volunteered to take part in various community service programmes.

Motto: The motto of National Service Scheme is NOT ME BUT YOU Benefits of Being a NSS Volunteer: A NSS volunteer who takes part in the community service programme would either be a college or senior secondary student. Being an active member, these student volunteers would have the exposure and experience to be the following:

 an accomplished social leader  an efficient administrator  a compassionate and empathetic human being   Sree Narayana college has two NSS units – 51&135. The respective programme officers are Smt.Bibin Prabhu and Smt.Arya Viswanath.The programme officers of the previous year were Smt.Priyanka and Smt.Diviya K.D  The main activities of our NSS units in the past five years are listed below.

Fish rearing

In association with Zoology Department NSS units started fish rearing. As part of this fries were put in the pond near the campus on 26-06-16 Medical Camp

In association with MACARE , a medical camp was conducted by NSS units for students, teaching and non teaching staff and for the public on 29-07-16. Principal Dr. Anitha Sankar C inaugurated the camp.

Talk on Cyber Crimes

As part of the observation of International Youth Day, a talk on “Cyber Crimes” by Dr. Mujeeb Rehiman (Sub Judge, DLSA ) was arranged by NSS units on 15-08-19. The talk was very informative on the cyber crimes of the present era.

Onam Celebration

NSS units celeberated onam with the students of Santhwanam Special School, Anthikkad. Students of Santhwanam Special School, Anthikkad were brought to our campus and our volunteers performed various programmes for them . Students of special school performed various programmes and our volunteers encouraged them a lot. Onasadya was arranged for the students of special school.

E- Valapad Project

NSS volunteers in association with Commerce Dept, Economics Dept. and NCC cadets participated in the e-Valapad project organized by Manappuram group along with our college extension club as our extension activity. The purpose of the project was to educate the people of valapad village about cashless transactions.A training about cashless transactions

was given to us by the Manappuram group on 9th and 10th

February 2017. The project was from February 22nd to 27th 2017. The survey was extremely effective in providing awareness about POS, E-wallet and USSD to the public. The people of Valapad co-operated with us and their positive response helped make the project a tremendous success. Organic Farming

NSS volunteers planted seedlings of different vegetables in association with the agriculture department. Smt. Geetha Gopi MLA inaugurated the project. Principal Dr. Anitha Sankar C explained the project.Thalikulam block Pabchayath President Dr. Subhashini Mahadevan, Agriculture Officer Smt. Tresa, Ward member Smt. Prameela , College Union Chairman Sri. Shanavas, NSS POs, Agriculture Assistant Smt. Saritha and NSS volunteers were present. The farming was purely organic. Flash Mob

NSS volunteers performed a flash mob on 22-03-17 at Thriprayar bus stand with the support of Arogyakeralam and DMO Thrissur in order to spread awareness about the necessity of regular exercise for a healthy life. Officials of health department were also present

Sahapadikkoru Veede project

NSS volunteers took initiative to build a house for Kumari. Anjali of second year B. Sc Physics . With the help of nearby people, teachers and other students, NSS team was able to complete that project. The key of the newly constructed house was handed over to Kumari. Anjali by the Hon’ble Governor of , Sri. P Sathasivam during the inauguration of the Golden Jubilee Celerbrations of the college.

Cleaned Pond Near College

In association with Enviornment club and NCC, our NSS volunteers desilted and thoroughly cleaned the pond near the college for water preservation. The process ensured that the pond won’t dry in the summer. Around 50 volunteers participated in the programme.

Rally on Blood Donor’s Day

On blood donors day(14/6/17), NSS volunteers and NCC cadets assembled in the auditorium and was took a pledge. On the same day there was a rally from the college to Tiprayar, holding placards on the importance of blood donation.

Reading Day

As the part of reading day our volunteers visited Govt LP school, Nattika and presented them story books. They also read stories for the students of school loudly and helped them to read stories.

Anti- Drug Campaign

Conducted anti-drug campaign on 28/6/17 in association with Anti- Narcotic Cell, NCC and Lions Club, Edamuttam .Sri. C. R. Santhosh Kumar(CI of Police) inaugurated the programme. Principal Dr. Anitha Sankar C. presided over the programme. The awareness class was handled by Sri. Sunny P. L.(Civil Excise Officer, Vadanappilly.

Karanel Krishi and Chendumalli Krishi in our College

Started karanel krishi in our campus on 29/6/17. Principal Dr. Anitha Sankar inaugurated it by sowing seeds of paddy. Krishi Officer Of Nattika Krishi Bhavan, NSS programme officers and volunteers were present.

Chendumalli Cultivation at Balikasadanam. Chuloor

NSS volunteers planted Chendumalli saplings in Balikasadanam, Chuloor as part of the programme “oonathinorukutta poove”. Principal Dr. Anitha Sankar. Disribution of food packets

NSS volunteers distributed food packets(lunch) on 21-08-17 to needy people wandering in and around Thriprayar bus stand. Principal inaugurated this project. Free Eye Checkup

NSS units organized free eye checkups on 21-08-17,22-08-17, 17-10-17 and18-10-17 to students of our college in association with Drisyam Eye Care hospital, Thrissur. Principal Dr. Anitha Sankar C. inaugurated the event.

Participation in the FIFA U-17 World Cup Campaign “Roll The Ball”

As a part of the campaign for promotion of FIFA U-17 World Cup scheduled at Kochi, Nehru Yuva Kendra conducted a Road Show “Roll The Ball” from five different locations concluding at Thrissur town At 3 p.m. Our 27 NSS volunteers participated in this programme.

Awareness Class on “Cyber and Social Awareness”(13-10-2017)

An awareness programme on “Cyber and Social Awareness” for first year students was organized on 13-10-2017. Mr. M. Surendran(Range officer, Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau) led the class. National Unity Day and National Rededication Day

As the part of National Unity Day and Rededication day, a pledge was taken by volunteers aled by Principal Dr. Anitha Sankar C. There was a rally from college through Thriprayar bus stand.

“Change your thoughts”

An intercollegiate awareness programme “Change your thoughts” was conducted on 28-10-2017 in association with NSS cell, University of Calicut and Thrissur City Police Mobile Awareness Unit. Thalikulam Block Panchayath President Dr. Subhashini Mahadevan inaugurated the programme. Principal Dr. Anitha Sankar C. presided over the function. Prof. K. N. Ramesh( Coordinator, NSS, University of Calicut) delivered an introductory speech and Arjun P. Sivaji (College Union Chairman) extended felicitations. The seminar was led by Sri. O. A. Babu (SI of Police) of Thrissur City Police Awareness Unit. The other members of the unit Sri. Biju M. C. and Sri. Sreejith K. were present.

Keralapiravi

On Keralapiravi, an essay writing competition was conducted for students of our college on the topic: Keralacharithrathiloode oru ethinottam. Megha. P. M (B.Com, II year) secured first prize, Lakshmy. P. J(B.Sc Botany, II year) secured the second prize and Jaithra V. R. (B.Com, II year) secured third prize. Also students stood in the shape of Kerala and sang the NSS song.

Childrens Day

On 14-11-2017, NSS volunteers visited the Anganvadi in our area and presented learning materials and sweets. The volunteers entertained the students of the Anganvadi with various cultural programmes.

Blood Donation Camp

A Blood Donation Camp was conducted in the college by the NSS units in association with IMA Blood Bank, Thrissur on 18-01-18. Principal Dr. Anitha Sankar C. inaugurated the camp by donating blood. Teachers, Non-Teaching staff, students of our college and nearby colleges and people of our locality participated in the camp. 56 detected blood group and 51 donated blood.

District Level Studyfest

Sasthrasahithyaparishath, the science departments and N. S. S. units of our college jointly organized a studyfest for school students on 20th and 21st January 2018. Members of Sasthrasahithya parishath, Member of our village Smt. Prabha, Dr. K. N. Remesh and Smt. A. S. Priyanka(NSS PO) delivered talks during the inaugural function It was a very effective and informative class to all the participants. Mushroom Cultivation Training

NSS units organized a mushroom cultivation training programme for the students of our college. The programme was inaugurated by principal Dr. Anitha Sankar C. Mr. Sivasankaran, who was the resource person, explained the nutritional and medicinal value of mushrooms and demonstrated how to cultivate mushrooms.

Talk by Smt. Uma Preman in connection with Intenational Women’s Day(15-03-18)

In connection with International Women’s Week, NSS units organized a talk by Smt. Uma Preman. Principal Dr. Anitha Sankar C. inaugurated the programme. Smt. Uma Preman said “The foundation of social service should be the love to others”. She shared her experience in the field of social service and her talk was highly influential. NSS programme officers Smt. A. S. Priyanka and Smt. Diviya K. D. , I Q A C coordinator Dr. M. A. Suraj and College Union Chairman Sri. Arjun P. Sivaji extended their speech in the programme.

Street play in association with “Punarjani” of Health Department.

NSS units arranged a street play on drug abuse in association with “Punarjani” of health department on 23-03-18 in front of our college. Principal Dr. Anitha Sankar C. inaugurated the programme. NSS programme officers, Mr. Haneesh (H. I.Nattika), Ward member Smt. Bindu and NSS volunteers were present there.

World Environment Day(05-06-17)

World Environment Day was celebrated in association with Kerala State Youth Welfare Board .The Board conducted environment day celebrations at district level. Our NSS volunteers went to Thrissur for participating this programme. There were a number of volunteers from different colleges gathered there. Volunteers planted saplings of trees at Thekkinkkad Maidanam. They also cleaned Thrissur District Hospital and planted banana saplings. Short Film Presentation

On June 28th a short film was presented for NSS volunteers in connection with the observation of International Day Against Drug Abuse. All NSS volunteers gathered in the old Library Hall. The short film spread the message of importance of saying NO to drugs and moral values in our life. NSS volunteer secretary Kumari Abirami welcomed the gathering. NSS programme officers also took part in the programme.

Gramathinu Oru Thanal

NSS units of Sree Narayana College participated in the project “Gramathinu oru Thanal” of the Forest and Wild Life Department of Kerala on 29-06-18. 13 saplings were planted on the road sides. The programme was inaugurated by P.Vinu, Nattika Gramma Panchayath President, Principal Dr.Reena Ravidran presided over the fuction.Smt Diviya K.D. welcomed the gathering. Felicitations were given by Sajeev Anthikkad on behalf of Kerala Forest Department. Vote of thanks was given by Smt A.S. Priyanka.

Kajal making workshop

A workshop on kajal making was conducted for NSS volunteers on 02-08-18. The workshop was led by Smt. A S Priyanka, NSS P O.

Disribution of bleeching powder and awareness on chloriation in flood affected areas of Nattika Grama Panchayath and packing of kits for distribution in the camp.

` On 24-08-2018, 16 NSS volunteers accompanied by Smt Prabha(Ward member) and ASHA workers visited 72 houses of our village and supplied bleeching powder and other materials from health department and gave awareness on how to use these materials for cleaning. On the same day, volunteers prepared 250 packets for distribution as per the instructions of Nattika Grama Panchayath President, Smt. P Vinu.

Survey and water testing in the flood affected area Karuvannur of Grama Panchayath

Our NSS volunteers attended training on water testing at town hall Thrissur(as per the directions from collector) and participated in the survey and water testing in the flood affected area Karuvannur of Cherpe Grama Panchayath on 01-09-18.

Blue army formation and Survey and water testing in the flood affected areas of Nattika Grama Panchayath .

Blue army for water conservation was formed in our college by the NSS volunteers on 06-09-18. It was declared by our Principal Dr. Reena Ravindran. On the same day our NSS volunteers conducted a survey and tested the chlorine level of water in the flood affected areas of Nattika Grama Panchayath in association with the Health department of Nattika Grama Panchayath. The Programme was inaugurated by Smt. P Vinu (President of Nattika Grama Panchayath). The Health inspector, Doctors, Panchayath Members and ASHA workers were there to support the programme.We tabulated the data and handed over the report to theHealth Department.

REBUILD KERALA

Our NSS volunteers covered the flood affected panchayaths Anthikkad, Chazur, Nattika and Thanyam as a part of the programme “Rebuild Kerala” using the Rebuild Kerala app of Govt. Volunteers took the pictures of damaged houses in the above mentioned Panchayaths and uploaded the photos using the Rebuild Kerala app. Students got certificates for that from the Govt. which were given in another programme of NSS.

Nature camp at Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary

43 NSS volunteers and NSS programme officers participated in the nature camp at Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary from 02-11-2018 to 04-11-2018

First year NSS volunteers participated in the training programme on palliative care on 22-12-18 held at the institute of pain and palliative care society, Thrissur. The training class was led by Dr.Ramla(academic coordinator of the institute of pain and palliative care society).

Viyyoor Jail Visit

On 24-01-19, 75 NSS Volunteers visited Viyyoor Central Jail along with two NSS programme officers. They reached there at 10.15 am. An Officer directed us to the central library of the jail. We saw many prisoners sitting calmly under the surveillance of police officers. With an official welcome from the welfare officer, we began our cultural activities. One of the inmates also sang a song for us. It was an opportunity for the volunteers to understand the lives of prisoners and they got the message “Do not show any discrimination to the prisoners when they comeback from the prison to their ordinary life”.

Training programme on Fire And Rescue

NSS units organized a training programme on Fire and Resue on 18-03-19 at Valappad Fire Station. A team of officers led by Sri. Vijay(station master) conducted the training programme. Officers explained the situations in which fire occurs and how to avoid such situations and how to control the initial stages of fire. They explained the quality check of LPG cylinders with a demo. They also trained our students to operate fire extinguishers.

Community living camps by NSS

Community living camps are an important part of NSS and each year they are conducted by the NSS units of college with different themes.
