CARLETON UNIVERSITY FLUID BODIES: MASCULINITY IN EMO MUSIC A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC BY RYAN MACK OTTAWA, ONTARIO MAY 2014 ABSTRACT Emo is a genre of music that typically involves male performers, which evolved out of the punk and hardcore movements in Washington DC during the mid-80s. Scholarly literature on emo has explored its cultural and social contexts in relation to the “crisis” of masculinity—the challenging of the legitimacy of patriarchy through “alternative” forms of masculinity. This thesis builds upon this pioneering work but departs from its perpetuation of strict masculine binaries by conflating hegemonic and subordinate/alternative masculinities into a single subject position, which I call synergistic masculinity. In doing so, I use emo to explicate this vis-à-vis an intertextual analysis that explores the dominant themes in 1) lyrics; 2) the sites of vocal production (head, throat, chest) in conjunction with pitch and timbre; 3) the extensional and intensional intervallic relationships between notes and chords, and the use of dynamics in the musical syntax; 4) the use of public and private spaces, as well as the performative masculine body in music video. I posit that masculine emo performers dissolve these hierarchically organized masculinities, which allows for a deeper musical meaning and the extramusical signification of masculinity. This standard divides the spectrum into 14 bands, each with a bandwidth of 528 MHz. The first 12 bands are then grouped into 4 band groups consisting of 3 bands, and the last two bands are grouped into a fifth band group. A MultiBand Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation (MB-OFDM) scheme is used to transmit information. A total of 110 sub-carriers (100 data carriers and 10 guard carriers) are used per band. In addition, 12 pilot subcarriers allow for coherent detection. Frequency-domain spreading, time-domain spreading, and forward error correction (FEC) coding are provided for optimum performance under a variety of channel conditions. The MAC sublayer is designed to enable mobility, such that a group of devices may continue communicating while merging or splitting from other groups of devices. To maximize flexibility, the functionality of this MAC is distributed among devices. These functions include distributed coordination to avoid interference between different groups of devices by appropriate use of channels and distributed medium reservations to ensure Quality of Service.

Music educators working with adolescent singing voices can use this document as a guide to lead their students to adopt healthy vocal habits and come to an awareness of their instrument, helping to prevent vocal injury. The author begins by reviewing literature on the topics of vocal health, hygiene and pedagogy concerning both adult and adolescent singers, and focuses on literature specifically relating to the adolescent singing voice. A healthy voice stems largely from sensible and hygienic vocal habits. The cultivation of good vocal habits seems to be more difficult to achieve as our world becomes louder and busier. Adolescence is the time when most vocal habits form establishing into a unique voice. Thus, music educators working with adolescents must seize the opportunity to replace unhealthy vocal habits with healthy ones in these young singers.
