Curtain Raiser) PRESS INFORMATION BUREAU MUMBAI F E S T I V A L H I G H L I G H T S (Curtain raiser) MIFF 2010 The 11 th Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Short and Animation Films (MIFF 2010) will be held from February 3 – 9, 2010. The biennial Festival is organized by the Films Division of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, in association with other media units and Government of Maharashtra. The venue of the Festival is the National Centre for Performing Arts, NCPA, Nariman Point, Mumbai. The inauguration • The inauguration of the Festival will take place at 6 p.m. on. Wednesday, February 3, 2010. Veteran film maker and Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner Mr.Yash Chopra will be the Chief Guest. • Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting Ms.Ambika Soni will preside. • Secretary, Information & Broadcasting, Mr.Raghu Menon and several celebrity guests of Indian Cinema will be present. • Mr.Ajay Devgan, Ms.Tanushree Datta and Oscar Award winning sound recordist Mr Resul Pookutty will also be present. • Naresh Bedi’s documentary ‘On a Tiger Trail’ and Shih-Ting Hung’s ‘Viola :The Traveling rooms of a little giant’ are the inaugural films • The inaugural ceremony will also have a Kathak performance by Uma Dogra and troupe. • Mr.Kabir Bedi will anchor the inaugural show. Entries The 11 th edition of the Festival received 864 entries from 37 countries. Number of films in the Competition Section – Documentary upto 30 minutes (12 films), Documentary over 30 minutes (17 films), Fiction upto 75 minutes (23 films), Animation (11 films). Films to be screened in the Non-Competition Section – 43 Retrospectives & Special Packages : • Best of Festivals (28 films), Jury Retrospectives (8 films), Naresh Bedi (5 films), • Pieter Van Huystee Special Package on Immigration issues (the Netherlands) (4 films) • Cinema Legends (31 films) • Remembering Freedom Icons (9 films) • Puppet Films –by Sanjit Ghosh (8 films) • Films on Women’s Issues (10 films) • Films from Film Schools (L V Prasad, NID, Satyajit Ray FTI) (28 films) • Treasures from NFAI (13 films) • Science Fiction Special Package (from USA, France, Italy) – (6 films) • Persistence Resistance Special Package – (5 films) • Films on Environment (including Vatavaran package) – (16 films) • North East Package – (10 films) • Country Focus – Bhutan – (9 films) • Country Focus – Argentina – (4 films) • Swiss-India package – (4 films) Special Show National Film Archives of India, Pune will stage a unique show of pre-cinema projection technique called ‘Shambharik Kharolika’ (the magic lantern) on February 5, 2010 Seminars and Open Forum Discussions Open Forum will focus on “Creating Documentary Culture, Getting finance for international projects, Taking documentaries to the audiences – national and international and Single window clearance for documentary films. Full day seminars will focus on ‘Redefining the Documentary’, Working environment of the documentary film maker, Government accreditation of documentary film maker etc. Participants include Mike Pandey, Anand Patwardhan, Mani Kaul, Jabbar Patel, Jahnu Barua among others. Other interactive sessions include “Changing Style of Acting” with Shabana Azmi, Anupam Kher as key speakers, “Film Music – then and now’ with Anandji, Sameert Tandon, Ila Arun and Sudesh Bhosle as key speakers. ‘Content in Indian Cinema’ with Subhash Ghai, Govind Nihlani, Javed Akhtar, Jabbar Patel as key speakers. Book Release Ms.Vijaya Muley’s book “From Rajahs and Yogis to Gandhi and Beyond’ will be releases by Ms.Nandita Das during the festival . Awards The best short film / documentary (upto 30 minutes) will be awarded a Golden Conch and Rs 3,00,000 cash prize. Another Golden Conch and Rs 3,00,000 award will be given to the best film/ documentary over 30 minutes duration. There are also awards for best animation film, fiction film and student’s film. Government of Maharashtra’s Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari will give a Trophy and Rs 1,00,000 for best debut film of a director. “Dr. V. Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award” will be given to an Indian film maker for his/her contribution to documentary film movement. This paper deals with the trends emerging in genres, technical advancement, and visual representation along with a cult that emphasized the commercial success of cinema by toeing the style of Bollywood and world cinema.
