The two most recent Popes – Benedict XVI and Francis – have continued John Paul II’s emphasis on Divine Mercy. Each provides a particular emphasis, which results in a dif- ferent manner of worshipping Divine Mercy. While each emphasize the entirety of salvation his- tory as revealing Divine Mercy, with its climax in Jesus Christ, Pope Francis more often speaks of mercy so as to avoid a theory of mercy that is not put into practice. One such manner of imple- menting mercy is the addition of new mysteries of mercy to the Rosary. While this has no support from the papal magisterium of Pope Benedict, it does find support in Pope Francis’ desire to find ways for mercy to penetrate ever more into the daily attitudes and actions of Christians. In the Bull, the Holy Father, Pope Francis said that he proclaimed the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy so that the Church may gaze even more attentively on mercy so that she may become a more effective sign of the Father's action in our lives. It is also a special time for the Church when her witness might grow stronger and more effective. The present research focuses on the contextualization of the Bull within the familiar parameters of the family. This contextualization is necessitated and anchored on the socio-economic experiences of families in Africa. For the purpose of this research, the phenomenological and particularist approach are employed for the purpose of contextualization. This piece has discovered that the contextualization of the Jubilee Year of Mercy to the African family provides a locale for a more effective discourse in the Jubilee Year of Mercy for progressive transformation. We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace. Our salvation depends on it. Mercy: the word reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. Mercy: the ultimate and supreme act by which God comes to meet us. Mercy: the fundamental law that dwells in the heart of every person who looks sincerely into the eyes of his brothers and sisters on the path of life.

Look again Do you see how it’s cupped, held off to the side, as if He’s about to slap you?...No? Look again Can you see how the fingers might be holding a pencil, as if He’s writing down and keeping track of all your transgressions? …No? Of course not So, then what is His right hand doing? Hand is raised in a “gesture of blessing” A “blessing” is defined as “a divine and life-giving action” Who’s doing the blessing… The ultimate source of divine blessing is The Father – Jesus is showing us what the Father does all the time. All blessings come from the Father who, through Jesus pours the Holy Spirit into our hearts. Who’s the Holy Spirit…The Lord, the giver of life “From the beginning until the end of time the whole of God’s work is a blessing…one vast divine blessing.” This is God’s whole work and he’s doing it all the time. Consider now another important truth within this image...note the color of Jesus garment. Sr. Faustina was insistent that Jesus be dressed in a white garment – the white garment of the priesthood. Jesus, the one great High Priest – but others share in that one priesthood of Christ. As Christ’s hand is raised in blessing, it follows then that the first function of a priest is also to bless.
