CHRISTMAS EVENT IN JERMYN STREET

Last year Jermyn Street hosted an excellent evening for their customers and the readers of Harpers Bazaar and Esquire Magazine, in both of which the Association had a double-page spread. It was a really good evening starting with a special party for the magazine readers at Quaglino’s and they then moved on to the shops who provided hospitality and entertainment. As always it is disappointing that more retailers don’t take full advantage of such promotional events. We are trying planning another such event for this year on THURSDAY 6 DECEMBER.

Further details to follow.

WILTONS for “The Ultimate Picnic Basket”

Picnics are an essential part of the English summer, whether it is a romantic picnic for two, sitting on a travelling rug in a remote beauty spot, or champagne and caviar served by the butler out of the boot of a Rolls-Royce. There are plenty of occasions for the latter during the Season examples of which are Royal Ascot in June, Henley Regatta in July, Cowes Regatta in August and racing at Goodwood. Another great favourite of these occasions is Glyndebourne, where music-lovers go to see opera performed in a small opera house in the middle of the Sussex Downs.

Planning a Picnic Whether it is an elegant occasion or a simple day out with the children, a picnic should be fun. Eating outdoors is not an occasion for worrying about diet and decorum - it is an excuse to indulge in all our favourite 'al fresco' foods.

The Menu We have carefully selected our most popular ingredients to provide you with “The Ultimate Picnic Basket”. The ingredients include wild hand sliced smoked Scottish salmon, hand picked white crab meat, wild Scottish Lobster, langoustines, cold sliced sirloin of beef, cheeses including stilton and cheddar, carrot cake, fresh strawberries, Chablis and Champagne. If required we are more than happy to source any other food items to fill your picnic basket.

The Basket The basket is made exclusively from the finest Polish whicker which also includes bespoke leather handles and monogrammed leather luggage tags. It contains plate’s cutlery, cruets, glasses, napkins and linen and even a cool bag for the food and wines with an extra ice pack to keep things at the correct temperature. We currently hold baskets for 2 and 4 persons.

STREET SCENE

GOODBYE TO THE TRADITIONAL PARKING METER

On 2nd October 2006 the Council launched a six month pilot of “Pay-by-Phone” parking. It’s a new payment method which means you no longer need to carry large amounts of change to pay for parking and can simply call or text to pay for parking via your mobile phone, using a debit or credit card. You can also top up your parking remotely by phone, so no more running back in a panic to put more money in the meter. And the benefits aren’t just for our customers - current on street-equipment for casual parking such as meters and Pay & Display machines are up to 20 years old and hence in a poor and unsightly condition with increasing maintenance costs. They are also susceptible to theft and vandalism due to the cash they contain, which in turn funds further criminal activity. Pay by phone parking therefore offers the Council a cost effective way of taking payment for parking whilst reducing street clutter and promoting safer streets.

The pilot initially took place in two very different parts of the City: Parking Zone G1, the popular ‘theatreland’ zone incorporating The Strand, Soho, Leicester Square and China Town, and Parking Zone C2, the Queens Park area between Kilburn Lane and Harrow Road. The former is one of our most expensive areas where parking is at a premium, whereas the latter is our lowest priced zone where vandalism is a recurrent problem. So far take-up in both zones has exceeded expectations and is continuing to rise with positive feedback from customers and parking attendants alike. In response to this feedback, Westminster has extended the trial to encompass Parking Zone E, Mayfair and St James, where all meters have been converted to ‘Pay by Phone Only’ bays. Our aim is to start rolling out Pay by Phone parking across the borough and will be encouraging other councils to do the same.

Since its introduction in October, Pay by Phone Parking has begun to change the way drivers park in a large part of the West End. With around 2,500 transactions in the first 3 weeks the benefits of Pay by Phone Parking are persuading drivers, particularly business people, to leave their coins at home. Pete Gibbons, a Broadcast Engineer who won a top of the range O2 mobile phone for being Westminster City Council's 1,000th customer thought the system should go London wide: "I think all London Authorities should adopt this system because of the ease of use. Prior to the phone system I would have to continually return to my car to extend the parking which would involve messing about finding change. This has been entirely eliminated by the new system and made my life a great deal easier."

Describing the scheme Alastair Gilchrist, Director of Parking at Westminster Council said:

"For motorists it gives coin-free convenience when paying for parking, and the ability to top up your parking remotely if you’re running late. For business, it means great accountability and control. This initiative again demonstrates that Westminster is providing a ‘blueprint’ service for other Council’s to follow."

If the scheme is successful the City Council plans to extend it across Westminster and in some areas remove coin meters completely. To set up an account to use Pay by Phone parking call 0870 428 4009 or visit www.westminster.gov.uk/cashlessparking.

Jermyn Street Association comment We were not informed of this until it had been implemented and have written to Westminster about this and also about the effect that the difficulties people are experiencing using the new system could drive them away from the West End.

If you have any feelings about the new system, one way or the other, then please write to:

Councillor Danny Chalkley Westminster City Council 64 Victoria Street London SW1E 6QP with a copy to Kevin Goad in Parking Services, at the same address.

GOING SMOKE FREE Through the Association, Members were invited to a business seminar on 19 April on ‘Going Smoke Free’. From 1 July all businesses must go ‘Smoke Free’ and the seminar gave Members a chance to get help in understanding the new law and their obligations as a business.

They had the opportunity to put questions to an expert team and speak direct with representatives from the council's environmental health, planning and licensing teams.

The new law states that all premises must display the above sign on all doors to their premises. This has been challenged by some shops but they have been advised by their lawyers that they must comply. To view how to comply with the new regulations, go to www.westminster.gov.uk/business/healthandsafety/smokefree/comply.
