  • Teacher Notes
Media Series - TV Teacher Notes Television in the Global Age Teachers’ Notes The resources are intended to support teachers delivering on the new AS and A level specifications. They have been created based on the assumption that many teachers will already have some experience of teaching Media Studies and therefore have been pitched at a level which takes this into consideration. Other resources are readily available which outline e.g. technical and visual codes and how to apply these. There is overlap between the different areas of the theoretical framework and the various contexts, and a “text-out” teaching structure may offer opportunities for a more holistic approach. Slides are adaptable to use with your students. Explanatory notes for teachers/suggestions for teaching are in the Teachers’ Notes. The resources are intended to offer guidance only and are by no means exhaustive. It is expected that teachers will subsequently research and use their own materials and teaching strategies within their delivery. Television as an industry has changed dramatically since its inception. Digital technologies and other external factors have led to changes in production, distribution, the increasingly global nature of television and the ways in which audiences consume texts. It is expected that students will require teacher-led delivery which outlines these changes, but the focus of delivery will differ dependent on texts chosen. THE JINX: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst Episode Suggestions Episode 1 ‘The Body in the Bay’ is the ‘set’ text but you may also want to look at others, particularly Episode 6 with its “shocking” conclusion.

This critically acclaimed, powerful companion piece to the Oscar®-nominated The Act of Killing, follows a family of survivors of the Indonesian genocide who discover how their son was murdered and the identities of the killers. Also announced in the ceremony was the Best Short Award, which honored LAST DAY OF FREEDOM, directed by Dee Hibbert-Jones and Nomi Talisman. The film is an animated account of Bill Babbitt’s decision to support and help his brother in the face of war, crime and capital execution. • Desiring Dexter: the Pangs and Pleasures of Serial Killer Body Technique
Desiring Dexter: The pangs and pleasures of serial killer body technique Author Green, Stephanie Published 2012 Journal Title Continuum DOI https://doi.org/10.1080/10304312.2012.698037 Copyright Statement © 2012 Taylor & Francis. This is an electronic version of an article published in Continuum, Volume 26, Issue 4, 2012, Pages 579-588. Continuum is available online at: http:// www.tandfonline.com with the open URL of your article. Downloaded from http://hdl.handle.net/10072/48836 Griffith Research Online https://research-repository.griffith.edu.au Desiring Dexter: the pangs and pleasures of serial killer body technique Stephanie Green1 School of Humanities, Griffith University, Gold Coast, Australia Abstract The television series Dexter uses the figure of appealing monstrosity to unfold troubled relationships between corporeality, spectatorship and desire. Through a plastic-wrapped display of body horror, lightly veiled by suburban romance, Dexter turns its audience on to the consuming sensations of blood, death and dismemberment while simultaneously alluding to its own narrative and ethical contradictions. The excitations of Dexter are thus encapsulated within a tension between form and content as ambivalent and eroticised desire; both for heroic transgression and narrative resolution. Arguably, however, it is Dexter’s execution of a carefully developed serial killer body technique which makes this series so compelling. Through an examination of Dexter and his plotted body moves, this paper explores the representations of intimacy and murderous identity in this contemporary example of domestic screen horror entertainment. Keywords: Dexter, body-technique, desire, crime television, horror 1 [email protected] Launched in 2006, the television drama series Dexter has been a ratings record- breaker for its network producers (Showtime, CBS 2007-2011).

Author: Elisabete Lopes Affiliation: ULICES (University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies) / IPS (Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal) The Curious Case of Vanessa Ives: The Portrait of a Witch in Penny Dreadful “I see things sometimes. I am affected by forces beyond our world” (Miss Ives, “Ressurection”). Penny Dreadful as Vanessa’s Journey into the Demimonde Penny Dreadful (2014-2015)1 is a TV show written and created by John Logan that takes the viewers to the Victorian London and revisits some epistolary Gothic literary works, bringing back to life characters such as the charismatic Dracula, Dr. Victor Frankenstein or Dorian Gray. Although remarkably influenced by the plots of these and other Gothic novels of the epoch, it is Bram Stoker’s Dracula that stands out as being the fundamental spinal cord of this reanimated literary and visually outstanding visual narrative. Indeed, capturing the sensational thrills provided by the penny dreadful cheaply sold in the streets at that period, the show is also enriched by the superb quality inherent in the characters’ dialogues and sublimely tainted with blood, gore and supernatural horrors. Emerging from this Gothic narrative’s mist, is the slender figure of Miss Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), the protagonist of the show and one of the characters that John Logan creatively crafted. Emanating strangeness and being the owner of a profound gaze, she is liable to stand out amidst the crowd due to a dress code that verges on steam punk, elegance and lady-like manners. On the other hand, the intricacies of her intellect, her preternatural talents and the aura of mystery that surrounds her like a transparent veil, lend her an enigmatic nature.

Yet contrary to early comparisons to his last film, Aronofsky's latest is far more in line with "Requiem for a Dream" by way of Brian De Palma thrillers of the late '70s and early '80s, starring Portman as a strait-laced ballerina who vies for lead in the Lincoln Center's production of "Swan Lake" against a fun-loving newcomer (Kunis), but is suspected by the company's artistic director (Cassel) of not having the inherent danger and daring to play the Black Swan as well as the purer White. William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. • Why Documentaries Matter Recognised As an Innovative Cultural Form
RISJ CHALLENGES CHALLENGES Documentaries have for many decades inhabited the schedules of public Why Documentaries Matter Why broadcasters. They have chronicled the lives and institutions of western democracies. In the past two decades, however, documentaries have become Why Documentaries Matter recognised as an innovative cultural form. Instead of being exclusively funded by television channels, documentaries receive money from a number of sources, including film funds, private investors and foundations. Rather than observing, documentaries are now thought capable of changing the world. Is this what they really do? How do we define a documentary? What does it mean to be the ‘author’ of a film? Nick Fraser has been editor of the BBC’s Storyville series since 1997; here he looks at the history of documentaries, showing how definitions of documentaries have changed – and how fragile is their funding. If we want good documentaries, he concludes, we have to find ways of encouraging their creators. “Nick Fraser writes about documentaries with unique authority. Not only has he made some good ’uns, he has commissioned more than practically anyone else on earth (for the BBC’s Storyville) and - as this book shows - he Nick Fraser has watched docs from their earliest days. His ideas on what the growth of the web and the decline of public service broadcasters mean for doc-makers are informed, imaginative and challenging.” Brian Lapping Chairman and Executive Producer, Brook Lapping “The rise of documentaries over the past two decades owes more to Nick Fraser than to any other single person. For so many of us who make non-fiction films, Nick’s peerless brand of tough love and mischievous curiosity have inspired us to aim higher as we try to promote greater understanding of the major events and issues of our time.” Eugene Jarecki Documentary film maker “This expert lament is beautifully written.
