A Chat with the DJ – Andy Clayton

MB.. You Have very kindly agreed to do a mix for the podcast but I feel its always good for listeners to get to know you a little with a 5 step Q & A.. So we know that you play the deep, melodic and progressive style but when did you start to DJ and what made you take the step from punter to player ?? (as in the DJ kind)

Andy: I got my first set of Technics 1210s in 1992 whilst studying at University and played on vinyl-only until making the transition to digital DJing in 2010. I believe the skills developed mixing on vinyl have enabled me to gain a fundamental understanding of the DJ art form and to be more creative now using digital systems including both a Serato set-up and industry standard Pioneer Nexus2s.

MB.. If you can share one musical memory with us, as a DJ or punter, which has lodged itself in the memory bank, what is it??

Andy: There are so many highlights it’s difficult to single one out! As a punter it would have to be regular nights at The Rex Club when I lived in Paris where was resident and Carl Cox made regular guest appearances – absolutely brilliant memories.

MB.. Tell us about a significant moment in your Dj’ing career?? (A warm up slot for a name, release of a track, the moment we asked you to do a mix J !!)

Andy:

As a DJ my performance at the Festival was a definite highlight as was the after-party in the Artists’ enclosure rubbing shoulders with some very famous names!

www.melodicbeatspodcast.com [email protected] Of all the podcasts I’m involved with, being invited to provide a mix for MelodicBeats is a real privilege given the incredible line up of previous guest mixes on the channel and I’m very proud to be able to add my name to the list!

MB: What are your 5 all time significantly important and memorable house tracks, ever….. The ones which you hear and it takes you to a time and place and just makes you smile !!!!!

Andy: There are so many great tracks over the years it’s difficult to narrow down to 5!

From a retro perspective I would single out Whatever You Dream – React 2 Rhythm and Slid - Fluke from the original Renaissance Mix Album – still the GOAT in my opinion.

Some of my favourite recent tracks include Satoshi Fumi’s Marine Remix of Solen – The Signal alongside the Camilo Remix of Organist by M&D Substance and Tunnel of Light by rAin (MU) which features on my November 2020 mix for MelodicBeats!

MB.. What is your favourite place in the world and what makes it so special to you ??

Andy: My lovely villa in southern Spain with easy access to and all my local DJ residencies! I can switch off from the world, enjoy fantastic weather and indulge my addiction to – perfection!!
