Welcome to the 30th Anniversary Season! I am very pleased to introduce this 30th anniversary orchestral series at the Cambridge Corn Exchange. We have an exciting programme for 2019/20 which has been curated by Robert Sanderson, an original director of the venue and most recently interim managing director at Cambridge Live. Robert has brought together a truly wonderful line-up of leading orchestras and top international soloists for local audiences to enjoy in the heart of Cambridge. I would also like to offer thanks to Boldfield Computing for their continuing and much valued support for the series. Acknowledging these are challenging times for many, I am pleased to announce that starting this autumn, tickets to the Series for students and people aged under 26 will cost just £5. I hope very much that you enjoy this special anniversary season. Councillor Anna Smith Executive Councillor for Communities Cambridge City Council BOOKING 03

We spoke to Andy Irvine, Managing Director of Boldfield Computing and a long-time supporter of at the Cambridge Corn Exchange.

Q: Tell us a bit about your interest in classical music and how you became passionate about it. Andy: My father played music constantly at home across all genres and usually sang along if he could. Like him, I am fond of many different styles but over the years I have found that classical music moves me the most. Even with all the excellent recordings and ways to listen to music wherever you are, hearing live concerts is a special experience for me and I try to catch as many as I can. Q: Do you have favourite composers or pieces of music? Are there special performances you’ll always remember? Andy: I like a lot of different composers but would rank Rachmaninov as my favourite. My first foray into sponsorship was to support the visit of Vladimir Ashkenazy to Cambridge, as he is a favourite of mine, and I am excited that he is returning this season. Some of the performances I have liked best have been at the Corn Exchange, among them Esther Yoo playing Glazunov, Alexandra Soumm playing Bruch and Valentina Lisitsa playing Rachmaninov, to name but a few. I really love it when the soloist plays a little encore at the end of their performance. Q: You recently decided to name the long-running Orchestral Series the Boldfield Orchestral Series. This is a major milestone, both for Boldfield and for the Corn Exchange. Why do you feel it’s important to support the arts in Cambridge? Andy: There is a debate to be had about the role of business and private individuals in supporting the arts in Cambridge and beyond. With the many competing priorities for funding, I believe it is important for classical music lovers to step up so we can continue to have this type of music. There will always be a gap between what you can earn from tickets and the high cost of bringing world class orchestras and artists to Cambridge. We are proud of our involvement.
