The History of the Kinks Singalongs and The Kinksfan Kollektiv by Geoff Lewis Photos courtesy of WhyKinks, Retroman Blog, Brigitte Jeffs, Ben Elsendoorn, Ruud Kerstiens, Alison Neale, Olga Ruocco, Dave Quayle, Simon van den Bergh, Jeanine Hoedemakers, Jurrien Schadron, Rob Williams, Steph Williams, Julia Reinhart, Rebecca G Wilson There is a tradition of fans getting together for a few drinks before Kinks-related events, Ray Davies gigs, Dave Davies gigs etc., and in 1998, a few Dutch fans suggested meeting up the evening before the annual Official Kinks Fan Club Meeting (known colloquially to the fans as “The Konvention” and held on a Sunday afternoon late in November). The Clissold Arms has always been well known to the fans as the home of the Kinks, as it was the site of the first ever live performance by Ray and Dave Davies, so that was the obvious place to meet up. About a dozen of us had a very pleasant evening in the saloon (now the main restaurant - the layout of the pub in those days was somewhat different) discussing all matters Kinks and examining the small area of wall that contained a few pieces of Kinks memorabilia and photos, and it became a regular feature of the Konvention weekend for those who had travelled to London on the Saturday to gather at the Clissold. The Clissold Arms Kinks wall 1998 The numbers meeting gradually increased over the years and in 2002, Henny Stahli and the late Herman Gombert (“The Kinky Two”) were among our number. Herman got his guitar out and started strumming and the rest of us happily sang along to a few Kinks classics. -

CORRECTIONS TO EXISTING ENTRIES PLUS ADDITIONS THROUGH 1993. Included here are all corrections to existing entries and text for material issued through 1993 as published in the 1994-97 Supplement as well as corrections which have been realized since that time. Not included are additions from the supplement for material issued 1994 onwards. Many but not all of these corrections have been made when possible to the existing text and entries in the new limited reprint edition. As these corrections are made only in the interest of eliminating outright errors in the original edition and not as any kind of incentive to purchase the reprint even if one owns the first printing, we are presenting this on-line version of the corrections for the benefit of customers of the original edition. It is still the hope to wholly revise and update You Really Got Me into a new and completely up-to-date format but the focus of all efforts now are on completing work on at least an initial volume of the long-promised All Day And All Of The Night, or "Part 2" of this series which will examine the Kinks' career and activities on a chronological day by day basis. This page can also act as a forum for further corrections to the original text if readers have new or improved information to add. Muswell Hillbillies (1971)
Muswell Hillbillies (1971) Nearly every band or artist of renown has had a “return to roots” record, the first batch being near the end of the 1960’s. Bob Dylan marked his return to the fray after his 1966 motorcycle accident with John Wesley Harding in December 1967. The Rolling Stones’ Beggar’s Banquet in 1968 was a throwback to acoustic blues and folk (the influences of their own influences) after dabbling in acid-soaked psychedelia. The Beatles worked fervently on the Get Back project throughout January 1969, vowing no overdubs and rehashing old rock and roll standards as well as Lennon/McCartney tunes from a much simpler time. With Muswell Hillbillies, Ray Davies tapped into his past and influences as well, though the era he evokes is anything but a simpler time. Muswell Hillbillies takes the wistful nostalgia of The Village Green Preservation Society and twists it on its head. The simpler way of life depicted on Village Green has been transplanted into the modern world, where it is rapidly fading away. While by no means a concept album, like Village Green it functions as a thematic piece, focusing on the life of the working class. Besides Ray’s own life, other characters from his family (and a family friend or two) provide inspiration, or at least get a name check. The modern world ominously looms over their heads; the change may be inevitable, but each tale on the album shows a different reaction to it. Various characters get militantly angry, delve into escapism, or simply go mad. It is important to note that no matter what, even in the album’s closing track, where the titular characters are being relocated to “identical little boxes”, there isn’t a hint of complacency or resignation; they instead pledge defiance by refusing to change. -

It provides a cre- ative outlet that exists only in a safe zone like this college: uncensored, student-led and created, and entirely new every year. As we readied to produce this year’s magazine, we went through many older versions of the publication, all the way back to when it was known as The Word. Every pub- lication was different, the product of that year’s staff and contributors, and ours has similar influences; it’s a result of the efforts of those who created it. Primarily, yours. While this magazine gets assembled and finessed by a devoted staff, the real labors of love are those of the budding writers, poets, photographers, and artists of Young Harris College who so generously share their tal- ents with us. Merlin The Smell of Kerosene A Test Pilot’s Odyssey The Smell of Kerosene tells the dramatic story of a NASA research pilot who logged over 11,000 flight hours in more than 125 types of aircraft. Donald Mallick gives the reader fascinating first- hand descriptions of his early naval flight training, carrier operations, and his research flying career with NASA and its predecessor agency, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). Mallick joined the NACA as a research pilot at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory at Hampton, Virginia, where he flew modified helicopters and jets, and witnessed the NACA’s evolution into the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. After transferring to the NASA Flight Research Center (now NASA Dryden Flight Research Center) at Edwards, California, he became involved with projects that further pushed the boundaries of aerospace technology. These included the giant delta-winged XB-70 supersonic research airplane, the wingless M2-F1 lifting body vehicle, and the triple-sonic YF-12 Blackbird. Mallick also test flew the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle (LLRV) and helped develop techniques used in training astronauts to land on the Moon. This book puts the reader in the pilot’s seat for a “day at the office” unlike any other.
