    Artists' Biographies Mel Chin was born in Houston in 1951; he now lives in New York City. Chin earned a B.A. in 1975 from George Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville, Tennessee. The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, toured a solo exhibition of Chin's work to The Menil Collection, Houston; The Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati; and the Queens Museum of Art, Flushing (1990-1992). Other one-person exhibitions of Chin's work have been presented by the Fabric Workshop, Philadelphia (1992); the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. (1989); Frumkin/Adams Gallery, New York (1988); Loughelton Gallery, New York (1987); and Diverse Works, Houston (1985). On view September 5–December 20, 2014, the exhibition features approximately fifty works from the past forty years—including sculpture, video, drawing, painting, and rarely seen documentation of Chin’s public land art and performance works. Rematch provides an overview of Chin’s complex and diverse body of work, stressing the collaborative nature of many of the artist’s endeavors and exploring his engagement with social justice and community partnerships. Encompassing a wide variety of media, Chin’s work evades easy classification and often includes multi- disciplinary and cross-cultural teamwork.     Disaster Response by Any Means, I immediately felt a need for a project, and feverishly penned a graphic novella under the pseudonym of Ignacio Moreles. Organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art, the traveling retrospective will launch its Houston run on Saturday, January 17, 2015 with a roving opening at all four venues. Chin will present a staggered series of artist talks throughout the day, starting with Blaffer at noon, Asia Society at 2 p.m., and CAMH at 4 p.m., followed by a party at the Station from 6-9 p.m. Mel Chin: Rematch continues through March 21 at Blaffer, and through April 19 at CAMH and Asia Society Texas Center. The website http://rematchhouston.com will serve as an online portal to the Houston presentation’s four components. Working across media including sculpture, video, drawing, painting, collage, land art and performance art, the Houston-born Chin has adopted mutability as his operating premise over his four-decade career, with works ranging from intimate sculptures and drawings steeped in the legacy of Dada and Surrealism to ambitious site-specific, research-driven, collaborative projects involving scientists, fellow artists and community members.
