Before Bob Rukavina, the 2015-16 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division Coach of the Year, took over the men’s basketball program in 1989, the Mountain Cats had only four winning seasons from 1969 to 1987. In 29 years, Rukavina, the 2006 National Independent Coach of the Year, has turned the Mountain Cats into one of the top Division II programs in the country. Pitt-Johnstown has made four NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and has posted seven 20-win seasons, including four in a row from 2005-06 through 2008-09. In addition, 2016-17’s 19-11 record marked the best since 2008-09. In 2007-08, Pitt-Johnstown became a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC). That year, Rukavina guided Pitt-Johnstown to a 23-8 overall record and the WVIAC regular season title with a 17-3 conference record. Rukavina, the 2007-08 WVIAC Coach of the Year, also led the Mountain Cats to their third NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2008-09, Pitt-Johnstown won the WVIAC Tournament title and advanced to its second straight NCAA Tournament. Pitt-Johnstown then joined Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) to begin the 2013-14 season., where Rukavina has guided the Mountain Cats to four consecutive conference tournament berths, including back-to-back appearances in the quarterfinals in 2016 and 2017. Rukavina, who earned his 450th win at Pitt-Johnstown with an 88-67 victory at California University (PA) on Feb. 15, 2017, ended his 29th season with an overall record of 468-331. He ranks among the leaders of active Division II coaches in wins (468) and winning percentage (.586). In 1998-99, Pitt-Johnstown finished the regular season ranked fifth in the country. The Mountain Cats also tied the school record for wins in the regular season, duplicating the 23-4 mark set in 1997-98. Pitt-Johnstown posted an 87-23 record (.791 winning percentage) between 1996 and 2000. 1999-00 also marked the program’s sixth straight winning season. In 1997-98, Rukavina guided the Mountain Cats to a school-record 24-5 record and a second consecutive NCAA Tournament bid, before losing in the East Regional Semifinals by one point to eventual Regional Champion Fairmont State (W.Va.) College. A year earlier, the Mountain Cats earned their first-ever NCAA Tournament bid and finished with a 21-6 record. In 1992, Rukavina led Pitt-Johnstown to its first winning season since 1979, clinching it with a win over Division I Youngstown State University. It was the first win over a Division I opponent in school history. The Mountain Cats have been one of the most efficient offensive teams in the country over the last 20 years. Pitt-Johnstown led the nation in field goal percentage in 2008 and 2010, and was the best three-point field goal shooting team in all of college basketball in 2012-13 and 2013-14. Coach Rukavina's strength is recruiting. The Mountain Cats have had four players lead the NCAA in statistical categories on six different occasions. They have had five players receive accolades ranging from All-American Honorable Mention to All-East Region performers. Nine former Mountain Cats have continued their basketball careers at the professional level in various countries. One statistic you will not see posted anywhere may be the most important to Rukavina--the rate at which his players graduate. Since he took over in 1989, the program has graduated over 90 percent of its players, a rate that will stand up to any institution in the country, especially at an institution with such high academic standards as Pitt-Johnstown. In August 2004, Rukavina was selected to be an instructor with former NBA Coach of the Year Jack McKinney at the MedQuest Coaching Clinic in Beirut, Lebanon. The clinic, sponsored by the Federation of Lebanese Basketball, taught Middle Eastern basketball coaches about the game. Prior to that, Rukavina coached an all-star team that traveled to Madrid and Vigo, Spain in the summer of 1998. The team won four of five games. The trip opened up contacts for recruiting and opportunities for playing professionally after college. Rukavina, his wife Sharon and their son Nicholas, reside in Lower Burrell, Pa.

This Is The Sports Center

The Sports Center, which has been the home of Pitt-Johnstown Athletics since the 1977-78 season, offers the Mountain Cats and Lady Cats a home court advantage that is second to none. A seating capacity of 2,400 provides an electrifying atmosphere that includes a cheerleading squad and nearly 800 Mountain Cat Maniacs. The fan support is well appreciated, as the Mountain Cat men’s basketball team wins nearly 80% of its home contests! The building also serves as a recreation and exercise area for Pitt- Johnstown students. It provides a swimming pool, dance studio, cardio fitness center, a weight room and a location for physical education classes. In addition, the Pitt-Johnstown athletics offices are located in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown's wrestling team now has access to a training facility fitting a nationally ranked, championship squad. As part of the Sports Center expansion, which included the addition of the Wellness Center, the wrestling room was being expanded to double the square footage in the facility. Construction of the 40,000-square-foot Wellness Center, at a cost of $9.7 million, was completed in December 2010. In addition to a climbing wall, the facility includes an elevated three-lane running track; cardiovascular and strength-training areas, dance space, and two multipurpose courts for basketball and volleyball.

Sports Center Floor Dedication

RICH RAGAN FAMILY COURT

On Saturday, November 18, 2017, the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown dedicated its new wooden floor between the women’s and men’s basketball home-openers against Bloomsburg University.

These games were the first basketball games played on the new court, which was made possible through the generous support of alumnus Rich Ragan ’78 and partnering donors. ‘ During his time as a Pitt-Johnstown student-athlete, Ragan made his mark on the basketball court as a record- setting player and team leader which culminated in his induction into the Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010. Now, as a champion of philanthropy, he leaves an indelible mark on the new Pitt-Johnstown Sports Center playing surface, which is named for him.

Ragan currently serves as the Executive Director of Global Facilities, Safety and Security for American Axle and Manufacturing, AAM, an $8 Billion global manufacturer of automotive and SUV axles and driveline components.

Ragan was a three-time NAIA All-District selection and a two-time NCAA All-District choice who set multiple Pitt-Johnstown records as a player from 1974-78. Mr. Ragan, the second 1,000-point scorer since Pitt- Johnstown made the transition from a two-year school to a four-year school a decade earlier, broke Don Elzer’s scoring mark of 1,147 points and held the title as the Mountain Cats’ All-Time Leading Scorer with 1,303 points from 1978-92. He currently ranks 15th on the scoring list.
