THE WAY TO PARADISE Saint Ann Maronite Church Scranton, PA INFORMATION BOOKLET Price and Sumner Avenue Scranton, PA 18504 (570) 344-2129 Page 1 of 27 THE FAITH AND LIFE OF THE CHURCH ARE EMBODIED IN HISTORY HANDED ON BY TEACHING EXPRESSED THROUGH LITURGY AND MEMORIALIZED IN ARCHITECTURE Msgr. Ronald N. Beshara Page 2 of 27 OUR PAST ... Maronite history has its origins in Antioch where the early Christians received their faith from Saint Peter after he fled persecutions in Jerusalem. According to Acts 11:26 the followers of Christ were called Christians for the first time in Antioch. The seat of the Church remained there for 7 years before being transferred to Rome. Prior to 741 there were 7 Syro-Catholic Popes, 5 of them were Syro-Maronites. Antioch was a Hellenistic city while Edessa to the Northeast maintained a Syriac-Aramaic culture followed by the Christians who later were to be called Maronite. Their tradition followed the language, theology and liturgy of Christ and His Apostles thus reflecting their mentality. After divisions and persecutions the Christians gradually migrated to the safety of the mountains in Lebanon. Thus the liturgical roots of the Maronite Church can be traced to Antioch and Edessa. In the 4th century Saint Maron, a friend of Saint John Chrysostom, fought the heresies that beset the Catholic Church at that time, particularly Arianism, Monophysitism and Nestorianism. His monastery became the principal center of pastoral and spiritual care for the area. The monks and followers, then called Maronites, were continually called upon and willing to sacrifice their lives for their religious convictions.

  • Lebanese St. Charbel Makhlouf, Known for Miraculous Healings, Unites Christians and Muslims
Lebanese St. Charbel Makhlouf, known for miraculous healings, unites Christians and Muslims St. Charbel Makhlouf is known in Lebanon for the miraculous healings of those who visit his tomb to seek his intercession – both Christians and Muslims. “St. Charbel has no geographic or confessional limits. Nothing is impossible for [his intercession] and when people ask [for something], he answers,” Rev. Louis Matar, coordinator of the Shrine of St. Charbel in Annaya, Lebanon, told CNA. Speaking in Arabic with the help of an interpreter, Mater said the shrine, which encompasses the monastery where the Maronite Catholic priest, monk, and hermit lived for nearly 20 years, receives around four million visitors a year, including both Christians and Muslims. Matar, who is responsible for archiving the thousands of medically-verified healings attributed to the intercession of the Maronite priest-monk, said that many miraculous cures have been obtained by Muslims. St. Charbel Makhlouf A family in Edmonton has also attributed their son’s medical recovery to the intercession of St. Charbel. Since 1950, the year the monastery began to formally record the miraculous healings, they have archived more than 29,000 miracles, Matar said. Prior to 1950, miracles were verified only through the witness of a priest. Now, with more advanced medical technology available, alleged miracles require medical documents demonstrating the person’s initial illness and later, their unexplainable good health. One of the miracles documented by Matar at the end of December, when he spoke to CNA, was that of a 45-year-old Italian woman. Suffering from a neurological disease, she was hospitalized after it was discovered she had tried to commit suicide by consuming acid.

  • Conflict on Mount Lebanon: Collective Memory and the War of the Mountain
CONFLICT ON MOUNT LEBANON: COLLECTIVE MEMORY AND THE WAR OF THE MOUNTAIN A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History By Makram G Rabah, M.A. Washington, D.C. December 12, 2016 Copyright 2016 by Makram G Rabah All Rights Reserved ii CONFLICT ON MOUNT LEBANON COLLECTIVE MEMORY AND THE WAR OF THE MOUNTAIN Makram G Rabah, M.A. Thesis Advisor: Osama Abi-Mershed, Ph.D. ABSTRACT The Druze and Maronites, the founding communities of modern Lebanon, have clashed on more than one occasion over the past two centuries earning them the reputation of being primordial enemies. This study is an attempt to gauge the impact that collective memory had on determining the course and the nature of the conflict between these communities in Mount Lebanon in what came to be called the War of the Mountain in 1982. This dissertation will attempt to reconstruct, perhaps for the first time, the events of the 1982 war through the framework of collective remembrance. In doing so, the thesis hopes to achieve better understanding of the conflict as well as the consequences it had on the two communities and beyond, most importantly the post-war reconciliation process; which maybe applicable to other communal conflicts in the region. This dissertation extensively utilizes oral history, in some of its parts, to explore how collective memory has shaped the conflict between the two communities, by interviewing a number of informants from both (inside and outside) the Druze and Maronite communities who have been involved or were witnesses to the conflict.

  • The History of Lebanon Holy Sites
1 The History of Lebanon Holy Sites Saint Elije Monastery – Mayfouq “Mayfouq” is a Syriac word which means “the water found above”. The village of Mayfouq is in Caza of Jbeil (Byblos) at an altitude of about 850m above sea level, and at 64km from Beirut. The Elije region has several religious sites that testify to its history and importance across ages. Most important among those sites is the Monastery of Saint Elije. The history of this monastery is still somewhat vague. It is built with natural un-chiseled building boulders. The oldest evidence of its history can be seen in the Syriac inscriptions dated AD 1120 found above a window in the monastery’s north façade. The inscriptions state: “In the name of the living eternal Lord, four patriarchs built the monastery, Jeremiah, Jacob, and John in AD 1221. The construction of the Lord’s mother monastery, so her prayers be with us, was completed by the sinners father David, Peter, and John.” In this context, it is important to note that some of the inscriptions found on the walls of the monastery relate part of its history: to the right of the main entrance, there is a relief of a bull’s head which signifies the remains of a pagan temple; above the doorsill of the main gate, a cross stands as an evidence of the Crusade era. This monastery remained deserted until the Lebanese Maronite Order received it as a donation from the ruler of Mount Lebanon Prince Youssef Chehab, and restored it. On one of the walls, we read the following inscription: “This temple was renovated in 1746 by the priests Amon and Manila.” Based on historical evidence, sixteen patriarchs lived in this monastery which was considered the most prominent see of the Maronite Patriarchate in Lebanon.

  • 07-24 Saint Charbel
“Everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life” (Mt 19:28). At the age of 23, Youssef Makhlouf left his home village and his family never to return. He entered religious life undertaking a life of fasting and prayer. In honor of a 2nd century martyr, he took Charbel as his religious name, symbolic of his new way of lifei. After his ordination to the priesthood in the Maronite Rite, he lived in a Lebanese Monastic Community for 16 years. Father Charbel once said: “Persevere in prayer without ceasing ... to understand and live according to his will, not to change it.” ii In 1875, he embarked on a new phase of religious life, alone with God in a hermitage. He spent the next twenty-three years of his life in quiet, solitary prayer and hard manual labor. His life of self-denial was characterized by his vows of Poverty, Chastity, and Obedience to the rule of hermits and to his religious superiors. While living in the harsh climate of the mountains, he had the simplest housing, clothing, and diet possible. His isolation was only interrupted by requests from his superiors to help administer the sacraments to nearby villages.iii Pope Paul VI, who canonized him in 1977 put his vocation in context. “Today's social life is often marked by exuberance, excitement, an insatiable search for comfort and pleasure, combined with a growing weakness of will: it will not regain its balance except with an increase in self-control, asceticism, poverty, peace, simplicity, interiority, silence.” iv Saint Charbel virtuously lived the vocation that God called him to.
