Upon graduation from Rummel in 1972, Cummings opted to attend Southern Methodist University, after being recruiting by other colleges such as Texas, Tennessee, LSU, Louisiana Tech, Jacksonville, Vanderbilt and, ironically, Tulane. After a pair of seasons in Dallas, he transferred back home to Tulane where he would average 19.5 points and 11.6 rebounds for the Green Wave over his two years on Willow Street from 1975 to 1977. • Renormalizing Individual Performance Metrics for Cultural Heritage Management of Sports Records
Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.

  • NBA Returns for a Break-Neck Finish to Regular Season
Sports42 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2017 NBA legend Yao Ming named Chinese basketball chief BEIJING: NBA Hall of Famer Yao Ming called for “urgent” reform and said he was facing a multitude of problems as he was elected president of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) yesterday. The giant former Houston Rockets centre, 36, arrives at the post as China searches for new superstars and more glory days for its national team, which has largely stalled since his retirement in 2011. Yao, the first league head not drawn from government ranks, has long advocated reform of how basket- ball is run in his country, which has failed to produce anyone close to his calibre. “At the moment, the most urgent matter is the reform of the CBA, which we must set on a virtuous cycle that will increase our influence and vitality, and bring new ideas to the fore,” he told a news conference in Beijing. “The biggest problem is that there is no ‘biggest problem’. The problems are everywhere. I believe this is a common thing to encounter in the process of reform.” He did not give specifics. DENVER: In this Nov 10, 2016, file photo, Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, center, jokes with teammates Yao was quoted by Chinese media as earlier telling the CBA Kevin Durant, left, and Klay Thompson during the Warriors’ NBA basketball game against the Nuggets in Denver. With he would work in the spirit of an official push by Communist all that was made before the season about adding Kevin Durant to an already star-studded roster, Golden State’s play- Party authorities to reform China’s sports management, part ers have jelled just fine.

Entraîneur d’une équipe de lycée à San José. Propos recueillis le 24 février 2014 en marge d’une conférence à USC. « It was like you had black kids from New York in the 1960s being coached by white men from Mississippi. The cultural disconnect was that drastic. France, because of its colonies, half the team is black. There was a serious disconnect between the players and the staff. When I was a rookie, we had 3 meetings: one to manage your money, one for security matters, one to handle lovers. All this was meant to protect the NBA brand, the corporate brand. We’re athletes, but we’re more than athletes. I would love to see these corporations consider athletes as individuals, just as they consider themselves.
