1 RESISTANCE MADE IN HOLLYWOOD: American Movies on Nazi Germany, 1939-1945 Mercer Brady Senior Honors Thesis in History University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of History Advisor: Prof. Karen Hagemann Co-Reader: Prof. Fitz Brundage Date: March 16, 2020 2 Acknowledgements I want to thank Dr. Karen Hagemann. I had not worked with Dr. Hagemann before this process; she took a chance on me by becoming my advisor. I thought that I would be unable to pursue an honors thesis. By being my advisor, she made this experience possible. Her interest and dedication to my work exceeded my expectations. My thesis greatly benefited from her input. Thank you, Dr. Hagemann, for your generosity with your time and genuine interest in this thesis and its success. Thank you to Dr. Fitz Brundage for his helpful comments and willingness to be my second reader. I would also like to thank Dr. Michelle King for her valuable suggestions and support throughout this process. I am very grateful for Dr. Hagemann and Dr. King. Thank you both for keeping me motivated and believing in my work. Thank you to my roommates, Julia Wunder, Waverly Leonard, and Jamie Antinori, for being so supportive. They understood when I could not be social and continued to be there for me. They saw more of the actual writing of this thesis than anyone else. Thank you for being great listeners and wonderful friends. Thank you also to my parents, Joe and Krista Brady, for their unwavering encouragement and trust in my judgment. I would also like to thank my sister, Mahlon Brady, for being willing to hear about subjects that are out of her sphere of interest.

Journalists and biographers and film historians have been dipping W into Bergman’s life (1915–1982) so relentlessly for so long that it is easy to forget that it wasn’t always in the public domain. The woman’s career, off and on screen, started being dissected so minutely so many decades ago that just about the only survivors from all those labors are her children and a hand- ful of actors from the already-41-year-old Murder on the Orient Express. In short, and though many of us are loath to admit it, the world of Ingrid Bergman seems to have warp-sped away from us to distances we might not have thought possible. It may not be as remote as Planet Garbo, but it is still out there, back in that century they used to call the 20th with an air of self-satisfaction making it sound like the tiniest of steps before infinity. (“My God, man, it’s the 20th century!”) There is, of course, the record of her many performances—filmed, kinescoped, taped, digitized, hologrammed, whatever technical development preserves them next.

October 4, 2016 (XXXIII:6) Joseph L. Mankiewicz: ALL ABOUT EVE (1950), 138 min All About Eve received 14 Academy Award nominations and won 6 of them: picture, director, supporting actor, sound, screenplay, costume design. It probably would have won two more if four members of the cast hasn’t been in direct competition with one another: Davis and Baxter for Best Actress and Celeste Holm and Thelma Ritter for Best Supporting Actress. The story is that the studio tried to get Baxter to go for Supporting but she refused because she already had one of those and wanted to move up. Years later, the same story goes, she allowed as maybe she made a bad career move there and Bette David allowed as she was finally right about something. Directed by Joseph L. Culture, Power, and Mission to Moscow: Film and Soviet-American Relations during World War II Todd Bennett For suggestions on how to use this article in the United States history survey course, see our “Teaching the JAH” Web site supplement at ,http://www.indiana. edu/~jah/teaching.. Following a sumptuous feast (and copious amounts of vodka), the guests, gathered around a banquet table deep within the Kremlin’s walls in May 1943, toasted Soviet- American friendship. Premier Joseph V. Stalin and Foreign Minister Vyacheslav M. Molotov praised the Grand Alliance. Anastas I. Mikoyan, the Soviet commissar for foreign trade, Lavrenty P. Beria, the head of the People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs (Narodnyi Kommissariat Vnutrennykh Del, nkvd), and Maxim Litvinov, the Soviet ambassador to the United States, offered toasts, and the Anglo-Americans present—including the British ambassador to Moscow, Adm. William H. Standley, the reigning United States representative, and Joseph E. Davies, Washington’s former ambassador—reciprocated. The American emissary from 1936 to 1938, Davies was there because President Franklin D. Roosevelt had sent him to arrange an introductory summit with Stalin, a meeting at which Roosevelt was sure all out- standing Soviet-American differences could be ironed out. Although Davies’ pres- ence was unusual, thus far the evening had been little different from similar receptions held by Soviet leaders for their Allied comrades during World War II. On this occasion, however, the former ambassador had brought with him a movie that both he and Roosevelt hoped would convince the Soviet dictator to eschew separate peace negotiations with Adolf Hitler and to remain within the tenuous Big Three Todd Bennett is visiting assistant professor of history at the University of Nevada, Reno.

  • Hollywood in 1939
The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release July 1989 HOLLYWOOD IN 1939 August 4 - September 12, 1989 Widely regarded as the height of the Hollywood studio system, the year 1939 produced an unparalleled variety of enduring films. Thirty-five of the most memorable movies released that year by major studios and independent producers are presented in HOLLYWOOD IN 1939, opening at The Museum of Modern Art on August 4, 1989. In addition to the acknowledged classics of the time, the exhibition also includes modest genre films and B movies which sustained the industry and entertained an avid public worldwide. In 1939, a decade after the entrenchment of talkies and with the Depression on the wane, the film industry reached a new level of technological, artistic, and economic confidence. In terms of theme, style, and budget, Hollywood's output was remarkably diverse. This series reflects the range of films produced at the time, from opulent adaptations of literary classics, such as William Wyler's Wuthering Heights, to massive biographical portraits, such as William Dieterle's Juarez. Also included are B pictures of the time featuring continuing characters—the thirties' equivalent of network television series--such as Harold S. Bucquet's Calling Dr. Kildare, Alfred Werkers's The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Edwin L. Marin's Maisie, and Richard Thorpe's Tarzan Finds a Son. Although all the major studios produced a wide variety of films, many concentrated on specific genres for which they demonstrated a particular flair. Raoul Walsh's The Roaring Twenties, starring James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart, is an example of Warner Bros' underworld melodramas; Rowland V.

  • HUAC and the Red Trilogy of World War II
HUAC and the Red Trilogy of World War II ONE OF THE CONCERNS that supposedly brought the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) to Hollywood was that the Communist Party-U.S.A. had quietly infiltrated the film industry. Members of the CP and fellow travelers were charged with having surreptitiously inserted ideological messages into mainstream American cinema. Screenwriters were considered particularly culpable. Among the primary HUAC concerns was what it considered grossly flattering and inaccurate depictions of the Soviet Union. Three films cited as prime examples were Song of Russia (1944), Mission to Moscow (1943), and The North Star (1943). The first two had been made by major studios, Warner Brothers and MGM, and the third by Samuel Goldwyn, an important independent producer who released this particular film through RKO. All three films had considerable artistic input from persons known to be affiliated in some way with the Communist movement. HUAC was absolutely correct in its assertion that these films totally distorted Soviet realities. The Hollywood dream factories had indeed turned black into white. The process that produced that result, however, was not the leftist conspiracy HUAC charged was at play. Nonetheless, the hows and whys of the making of this red trilogy offer valuable insights into the role of the Communist left in the studio system of the 1940s. Anyone even slightly knowledgeable about that period of filmmaking understands that the studio chiefs controlled the making of films from start to finish in a process that usually involved years, not months or weeks. The producers approved each film project, hired the artistic personnel, approved original and revised scripts, watched daily takes, supervised editing, and decided on the final cut.
