    Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment.

    Guide to the Flora of the Carolinas, Virginia, and Georgia, Working Draft of 17 March 2004 -- LILIACEAE LILIACEAE de Jussieu 1789 (Lily Family) (also see AGAVACEAE, ALLIACEAE, ALSTROEMERIACEAE, AMARYLLIDACEAE, ASPARAGACEAE, COLCHICACEAE, HEMEROCALLIDACEAE, HOSTACEAE, HYACINTHACEAE, HYPOXIDACEAE, MELANTHIACEAE, NARTHECIACEAE, RUSCACEAE, SMILACACEAE, THEMIDACEAE, TOFIELDIACEAE) As here interpreted narrowly, the Liliaceae constitutes about 11 genera and 550 species, of the Northern Hemisphere. There has been much recent investigation and re-interpretation of evidence regarding the upper-level taxonomy of the Liliales, with strong suggestions that the broad Liliaceae recognized by Cronquist (1981) is artificial and polyphyletic. Cronquist (1993) himself concurs, at least to a degree: "we still await a comprehensive reorganization of the lilies into several families more comparable to other recognized families of angiosperms." Dahlgren & Clifford (1982) and Dahlgren, Clifford, & Yeo (1985) synthesized an early phase in the modern revolution of monocot taxonomy. Since then, additional research, especially molecular (Duvall et al. 1993, Chase et al. 1993, Bogler & Simpson 1995, and many others), has strongly validated the general lines (and many details) of Dahlgren's arrangement. The most recent synthesis (Kubitzki 1998a) is followed as the basis for familial and generic taxonomy of the lilies and their relatives (see summary below). References: Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (1998, 2003); Tamura in Kubitzki (1998a). Our “liliaceous” genera (members of orders placed in the Lilianae) are therefore divided as shown below, largely following Kubitzki (1998a) and some more recent molecular analyses.     1 COMPOSTING AND COMPOST UTILIZATION FOR AGRONOMIC AND CONTAINER CROPS S. Kuo1, M. E. Ortiz-Escobar2, N. V. Hue2, and R. L. Hummel3 Abstract Stabilization of organic wastes by composting is highly desirable as composting eliminates odor, increases nutrient contents, and prevents the organic wastes from becoming phytotoxic when incorporated into the soil. It is a microbial-mediated process, which breaks down some of the organic N to more readily useable forms, with the release of a sizable portion of organic C as CO2. The viability of composting depends very much on the quality and consistency of compost produced as they affect compost marketability and its end use. The article reviews the composting processes, various techniques used in compost production, and the methods used in the determination of compost maturity and quality. The selection of a technique and a location for composting should consider the availability of feed stocks and the land, and the proximity to urban population. The review also focuses in some detail on nitrogen and the ratio of carbon to nitrogen in various composts and how effective the composts are in promoting crop productivity and soil quality as well as in replacing peat as a growing medium for container crops. Because of a significant impact of compost metals on compost quality and soil metal accumulation, an extensive review was made on the concentrations of various metals in composts using municipal solid waste and/or sewage sludge (or biosolids) as feed stocks. The concentration limits of various metals in the finished composts imposed by different countries around the world and the resulting effect of compost application to soil on plant uptake of metals and the transferability of the added compost metals from soil to plants were discussed.

Carica papaya ● Water Science & Plants Protecting Endangered Plant Species Sweetwater slope: Bill and Pam Anderson To date, a total of 117 listed taxa have been recorded in 26 panhandle parks, making these parks a key resource for the protection of endangered plant species. 4 ● The Palmetto Volume 28:1 ● Winter/Spring 2011 in Panhandle State Parks by Gil Nelson and Tova Spector The Florida Panhandle is well known for its natural endowments, chief among which are its botanical and ecological diversity. Approximately 242 sensitive plant taxa occur in the 21 counties west of the Suwannee River. These include 15 taxa listed as endangered or threatened by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), 212 listed as endangered or threatened by the State of Florida, 191 tracked by the Florida Natural Areas Inventory, 52 candidates for federal listing, and 7 categorized by the state as commercially exploited. Since the conservation of threatened and endangered plant species depends largely on effective management of protected populations, the occurrence of such plants on publicly or privately owned conservation lands, coupled with institutional knowledge of their location and extent is essential. District 1 of the Florida Sarracenia rosea (purple pitcherplant) at Ponce de Leon Springs State Park: Park Service manages 33 state parks encompassing approximately Tova Spector, Florida Department of Environmental Protection 53,877 acres in the 18 counties from Jefferson County and the southwestern portion of Taylor County westward.

I first joined this organization while still an undergraduate at the University of Georgia many years ago. One day I was walking through the halls of what used to be the Botany Department (now it is the Plant Science Department) and stopped to look at the posts on a bulletin board (sort of the original Internet). Among the “roommate wanted,” “Summer Field Work in Costa Rica,” and Doonesbury comic strips, I found a stack of member registration forms for something called the Georgia Botanical Society. That sounded interesting to an aspiring field botanist, so I took one and filled it out, joining at the special student rate. A couple of years later, my wife and I joined together at the family rate. Here I am, more than three decades later, and this Society isn’t just interesting…it is a sort of home for me.

METHODS TO CHARACTERIZE HABITAT The following are some methods that can be employed to characterize habitat: ECOLOGICAL COMMUNITIES ANALYSIS Every detailed natural resources evaluation should incorporate an ecological community analysis. This consists of identifying, describing, and mapping the community types present within the project area. The characterization of ecological communities is primarily based on vegetative types, but it may also consider abiotic factors and wildlife usage. Descriptions of ecological communities should generally follow Ecological Communities of New York State. In some cases, the dominant plant species listed in the community descriptions contained in this document may differ from the matching urban commu- nities found in New York City. Descriptions of the various plant communities can vary widely with re- spect to the species composition in New York City. It is important to note that all species listed under a particular plant community composition are not required to be present at each location to classify that particular plant community. Rather, each location must be viewed in context with the potential altered elements of the system, such as, past site disturbances, filling and depletion of soils and hydro- logic alterations to the site and adjacent areas that influence the vegetation composition. Therefore, relation to the these changes and additional collection of field data with respect to dominant and co- dominant vegetation, understory species composition, soils, and hydrology provides additional infor- mation as to the appropriate ecological community classification.
