Some pro tips By KATHERINE ROTH Associated Press To reduce waste and avoid unnecessary plastic bottles and chemicals — and to save money — many people are opting to make cleaning products from scratch at home. You can find an abundance of recipes for household cleaning products online, along with reusable glass spray bottles designed to hold them. But not all homemade cleaning products are created equal, and some simple concoctions can be downright dangerous. “To have an unlabeled cleaning product in a Mason jar with kids around can be a dangerous thing,” warns Carolyn Forte, director of the home appliances and cleaning products lab at Good Housekeeping. “And be careful never to mix bleach with anything but water. Certain combinations can be toxic.” Baking soda and vinegar also should not be combined. Mixed together they are ineffective at cleaning and, if con- tained in a jar, likely to explode, she warns.

So when making your own cleaning mixtures at home: • Double check the safety of the combination you choose; This photo provided by Cleaning Essentials shows some of This photo provided by Cleaning Essentials shows the com- • Keep all products out of reach of children or pets; the company’s reusable glass cleaning bottles available pany's reusable cleaning bottle and recipes for nontoxic • And list all ingredients clearly on the jar or spray bottle. online and in stores. Test your cleaning mixture before using it. “Making your own window cleaner may be OK, but years of chemistry and safety research have gone into products like laundry and dish- washer detergents and furniture polishes, and you don’t want to risk accidentally damaging something that’s precious to you,” Forte says. Even so, it can be useful to know what to use in a pinch when you don’t have time to rush to the store, says Stephanie Sisco, home editor at Real Simple magazine. And many homemade cleaning combinations do work, with far fewer chemicals than in many store-bought brands. To help people make gentle cleaning products at home, Mike and Martha Robinson founded Cleaning Essentials, which sells sturdy glass bottles in various colors and sizes, labeled with recipes for solutions that can be made using mostly vinegar, water and essential oils. “Sixty years ago our grandparents wouldn’t have gone to the store for cleaners. They would have used vinegar, baking soda, some elbow grease, and been healthier for it,” says Mike Robinson. Katy Kiick Condon, senior editor for home design at Better Homes & Gardens magazine, agrees: “Just steam, hot water and some elbow grease can accomplish a lot.”

But with the right choices, says interior design- er Gabriel Anderson, you can have an exceptional master bath without overspending. “Having huge expanses of marble is amazing and wonder- ful, but you don’t have to have that to have an amazing bath- room,” says Anderson, co-founder of the New York design firm Dean and Dahl. There are “little touches you can incor- porate that really bring a master bath to life.” We’ve asked Anderson and two specialists in bath design — Julia Walter of Boffi Georgetown in Washington, D.C., and Nadia Subaran of Aidan Design in Silver Spring, Maryland — to tell us what those little touches and smart strategies might be.

PLANNING A BETTER SHOWER When you reach in and turn on your shower, does your hand get soaking wet? Wouldn’t it be nice if it didn’t? “One of the things that I always do now is installing the handles for the shower in a place that’s not directly below the shower head,” Anderson says. That will require the pipes to be extended a bit further, so “the plumber will be bugged by it. But in the end, it doesn’t really cost a lot more.” Another impactful adjustment: Design a shower that’s enclosed by a partial glass wall, with an open space but no door and no step where you enter. The floor needs to be pitched downward just slightly near the drain so that water doesn’t run out of the shower area. This is easier to do in a larger bathroom, especially if you’re doing new construction rather than just remodeling, Subaran says, but it’s worth con- sidering. This photo shows the contrast of painted walls and tiled areas, as seen in this McLean, Va., master bathroom, which can “Folks are thinking about wanting the ability to just kind of make the tiles a more noticeable focal point. In assessing trends for the new year in bath design, interior designer Julia walk into a shower,” rather than stepping over something to Walter says many homeowners are only tiling parts of their master bathrooms. DADDY’S HOME Tony Rubino and Gary Markstein YOUR ontract ridge HOROSCOPE C B By Jaqueline Bigar

HAPPY BIRTHDAY for Friday, Jan. 11, 2019: This year you make a strong effort to commu- nicate on a deeper level. You often sense things, or have premonitions, that become reality. Someone in your life -- it could even be you -- is into having power and control. Know that this behavior will push others away. If you are single, you’ll want to claim your power but not make demands of others. By Steve Kelley and Jeff Parker You could meet the right person toward the end of DUSTIN the year. If you are attached, when you or your sweetie becomes controlling, you push the other person away. You cannot control others, only yourself. PISCES loves to chat with you.

The Stars Show the Kind of Day You’ll Have: 5-Dynamic; 4-Positive; 3-Average; 2-So-so; 1-Difficult

ARIES (March 21-April 19) HHH Be more attentive to your feelings than you typically are. You might observe someone you respect being the source of general upheaval. You might want to avoid making a judgment at the Mark Buford moment. See what develops. A discussion likely SCARY GARY will ensue. Tonight: Keep your plans hush-hush. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) HHH Zero in on what is important to you. A meeting could prove to be a good source of infor- mation. You might feel the need to revise your thinking with the help of another person. Be direct in your choices. You might inadvertently delight a friend. Tonight: Out and about. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) HHH You might not be as comfortable in the limelight as you had expected to be. An associate Crosswords shares more of what he or she thinks. You might take this person’s words as criticism, but know that Mick and Mason Mastroianni his or her comments are simply a reflection of who DOGS of C-KENNEL he or she is. Tonight: Join a friend. CANCER (June 21-July 22) HHH Break past restrictions that seem to be coming in from out of nowhere. You might not realize that some of your actions could be in response to a respected and admired person’s com- ments. Walk around this person’s power play. Tonight: Follow someone else’s lead. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) HHH You might be pulled in by a particular person in your life. As a result, you will want to adapt your path or ideas. Make sure you’re ready for the repercussions of this type of choice. Open up a discussion to get feedback. Tonight: Have a B.C. Mastroianni and Hart conversation with a favorite person. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) HHH Defer to others and listen to their feed- back. You see someone you care about draw oth- ers in with his or her high magnetic energy. Let this person express his or her feelings or perhaps even act on them. Say little, observe a lot and watch what unfurls. Tonight: Go along with a request. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) HHH Pace yourself, as you have a lot of ground to cover. You might feel pressured by a situation in which the other party demands to have his or her way. You will want to bypass this situa- tion for the moment and get into a favorite pastime ONE BIG HAPPY Rick Detorie instead. Tonight: Relax with the moment. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) HHH You could be heading in a new direc- tion; however, you might not be sure of the out- come. You feel pressured in conversations with those involved. You likely will want to resist the inevitable, but the more you do, the more difficult the situation becomes. Tonight: Feeling frisky. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) HHHH You could feel as if someone is using money to pressure you. The more this behavior appears, the angrier you get. Be more in tune with your long-term desires. Calm down and consider a change on some level that might clear out this ANDY CAPP Mahoney, Goldsmith and Garnett hassle. Tonight: Make it an early night. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) HHH You could be beyond logic when mak- ing a demand that you refuse to back down from. You might want it to appear as though you don’t care how much chaos you are creating. Be aware that a loved one could be distancing him- or her- self from you. Tonight: Tell it like it is. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) HHH Your spending could be out of control. You might not like what happens if you continue to refuse to rein in your spending. Other indul- Cryptoquip gences will not pay off for you right now. Your personality emerges as you relax. Your power is obvious. Tonight: Keep an eye on your budget. ZACK HILL John Deering and John Newcombe PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) HHH You might be off thinking and consider- ing some fun fantasy. In the here and now, how- ever, a friend could become controlling. You will have to decide whether you want to get into a disagreement in support of your desires. Tonight: Others cannot seem to resist you.
