It is well known that athletes from a specific region or country are dominating certain sports disciplines such as marathon running or Ironman triathlon; however, little relevant information exists on cross-country skiing. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the aspect of region and nationality in one of the largest cross-country skiing marathons in Europe, the “Engadin Ski Marathon.” All athletes ( = 197,125) who finished the “Engadin Ski Marathon” between 1998 and 2016 were considered. More than two-thirds of the finishers (72.5% in women and 69.6% in men) were Swiss skiers, followed by German, Italian, and French athletes in both sexes. Most of the Swiss finishers were from Canton of Zurich (20.5%), Grisons (19.2%), and Berne (10.3%).

Forum Nordicum 3 Deine Belohnung. Ski Championships Lahti will host the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2017 for a historic seventh time. We are extremely proud to be the first city to achieve this record. To celebrate our unique history, we decided to name the event the Centenary Championships. The Centenary Championships are both an exciting and carefully prepared world-class sports event and one of the festivities that celebrate the centenary of Finland’s independence. A rare occasion for us Finns – and hopefully for our international guests. Lahti offers an optimal setting for record-breaking performances. The traditional venue has undergone extensive renovation and is now a fully functioning stadium that meets today’s requirements. We are also proud to have Vierumäki Olympic Training Center as our athlete’s village that allows the athletes to unwind and focus all their energy on performing at their best. We hope that the 2017 World Championships will leave their mark on future decades of sports events in Lahti and in Finland. The event has gained a great deal of popularity among young people, and we will soon have a new generation of volunteers for sports events.

Despite the vast amount of research focusing on this sport, no review has yet addressed the pacing strategies of elite XCS racers or the factors that influence their performance. The aim was to review the scientific literature in an attempt to determine the effects of pac- ing strategy on the performance of elite XCS racers. Methods: Four electronic databases were searched using relevant subject headings and keywords. Only original research articles published in peer- reviewed journals and the English language and addressing performance, biomechanics, physiology, and anthropometry of XCS racers were reviewed.

  • 50Th Anniversary of the Engadin Skimarathon
MUSEUM ALPIN PONTRESINA VIA MAISTRA 199, CH-7504 PONTRESINA www.pontresina.ch/museumalpin [email protected] Special Exhibition: 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ENGADIN SKIMARATHON. The success story of the largest cross-country skiing event in Switzerland In 2018, the Engadin Skimarathon takes place for the 50th time. To mark this very special anniversary, numerous activities look back over the history of this tradition-steeped race from Maloja to S-chanf. In addition, the entire Marathon week in March is accompanied by a varied programme. A special exhibition at the Museum Alpin in Pontresina from December 2017 to October 2018 pays tribute to the jubilee, while a photo exhibition in the renowned St. Moritz Design Gallery, housed in the Serletta indoor car park, also illustrates the 50-year old history of this cross-country skiing event. Films, exhibits, eyewitness accounts and numerous pictures evoke memories stretching right back to the very first race. Museum visitors can watch the ski marathon on a huge screen, almost as if they were experiencing it live. The idea of staging a major public cross-country race in the Engadin was repeatedly discussed during the second half of the 1960s. Although cross-country skiing was relatively new, it quickly became clear that it had an exciting future ahead of it as a public sport. However, at that time, nobody could have foreseen that the Engadin Skimarathon would one day become the largest cross-country skiing event in Switzerland and even the second largest in the world. The path from the initial idea to the first race being held proved to be a long, upward climb, for all kinds of obstacles had to be overcome along the way.

Engadin Ski Marathon The Largest skating Event in the World Date: March 13th, 2022 This Alpine valley located in Switzerland’s Grisons canton represents for a large number of peo- ple an idyllic location for cross-country skiing. The Engadin Valley with its lakes that go to the foot of its fascinating mountain range presents postcard-perfect beauty for which there are not enough adjectives to describe. The Engadin Valley has it all perfect snow, perfect geographic location, perfect altitude, and perfect dry and cold climate in the winter. Thus, you are assured of excellent Nordic skiing condi- tions almost all the time and certainly in March. In 1969, the Engadin Ski Marathon started. It has never stopped. It starts on the frozen lake of Maloja and goes to the little village of S-chanf at the lower level of the Engadin Valley. Every Nordic skier should, at least once in his or her life, race this course. Many, to be sure, come back year after year because the organization is perfect; the transportation is perfect; and the way the race is run is always perfect. And don’t forget, every village you pass through offers new goodies to eat and drink. 42 kilometers never seemed shorter! The Engadin Ski Marathon is the largest Nordic skating race in the Worldloppet circuit. Every year there are about 14,000 partici- pants. Don’t be fooled by some commentators who say that the course is easy. You have to have good technique and, of course, lots of endurance. And make sure that you know how to go downhill! Otherwise, you might not feel comfortable during the famous descent to the Staz Lake, for example.

News from Vasaloppets Veteranklubb January 2021 No. 1 MINI-PROFILE Board member 819 Bosse Wallin Vasalopps veteran 819 Bosse Wallin was born in the village of Östnor in Mora. It's not surprising that he started skiing given where he came from. Östnor has trained a number of talented skiers. The first IFK Mora winner in Vasaloppet, Anders Ström came from Östnor as well as both Nils "Mora-Nisse" Karlsson (nine wins in Vasaloppet and a 50 km Olympic gold in St Moritz in 1948) and Gunnar Eriksson (relay gold in St Moritz in 1948 and world championship gold in 50 km in Lake Placid). We should also mention our first "50-racer", Vasalopps veteran number 9 Gösta Aronsson, also from Östnor and related to Bosse! Bosse says that when Gösta Aronsson finished his 50th race between Sälen and Mora, Bosse caught up with Gösta between Gopshus and Hökberg and accompanied him up to the control station in Hökberg. Bosse Wallin had prominent role models in Östnor– there is no doubt about that! Bosse himself has been a sharp Vasaloppet skier in his day! How about the time 4:53 in 1983? Bosse became a Vasaloppet veteran in 2013 and has also ridden Stafettvasan, Kortvasan and Halvvasan as well as Marcialonga, Engadin Ski marathon, Vasaloppet China, Birkebeinern and Svalbard Ski marathon and a number of other races. When Bosse returned to his childhood and youth in Östnor, he tells us that many other young people, started in Lilla Vasaloppet. Getting to and from school on skis during the winter was the rule than the exception.
