Welcome Welcome to the first issue of Arthropods of Canadian Forests. This newsletter is a product of a collabora- tion between Natural Resources Canada, Canadian Forest Service and the Biological Survey of Canada, Terrestrial Arthropods (BSC). The goal of the newsletter is to serve as a communication tool to encourage information exchange and collaboration among those in Canada who work on forest arthropod biodiver- sity issues, including faunistics, systematics, conservation, disturbance ecology, and adaptive forest man- agement. As well, the newsletter supports the Forest Arthropods Project of the BSC. This annual newsletter will be distributed electronically (pdf) in late March. If you wish to be placed on the distribution list, please contact David Langor. Newsletter Content will include project updates (short articles that introduce ongoing relevant projects in Canada); feature articles (overviews, summaries, commentaries or syntheses); a graduate student section featuring brief summaries of thesis research, funding opportunities, employment notices, etc.; brief news articles concerning meetings, symposia, collaboration opportunities, collecting trips, etc.; and a listing of new publications and websites. SCHMIDT Abstract Two new species of Ground Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Platynini) are described: Anchomenus bellus sp.n. from southern and eastern Turkey, and A. alcedo sp.n. from northern Israel and Lebanon. In external characters they are very similar to the western Turkey endemic A. dohrnii FAIRMAIRE, 1866, but differ distinctly each in male genitalic characters. A third new species of Anchomenus BONELLI is described from eastern Afghanistan: A. kataevi sp.n. The relationships of the new species are briefly discussed, and a key to the Palaearctic representatives of the genus Anchomenus is pro- vided. Anchomenus dorsalis infuscatus CHEVROLAT, 1854, formerly considered a junior synonym of A. dorsalis PONTOPPIDAN, 1763, is here regarded as a good subspecies. INTRODUCTION HAYDAK, in 1936, managed to rear Oryzaephilus surinantensis (L.) in the la- boratory using an artificial diet. Many researchers have followed in his footsteps, so that since then, approximately 260 species of Coleoptera have been raised on nonnatural diets. Among these species there are 121 which are eminently xylophagous. They belong to seven families (Buprestidae, Elateridae, Bostrychiclae, Lyctidae, Myc- teridae, Cerambyciclae and Curculionidae). Their importance, from the economic point of view, varies widely : some of them attack living trees making them a pest ; others feed on dead or decaying wood so that they may be considered harmless or even beneficial (for example in the decomposition of tree stumps in forests) ; finally, a few cause damage to seasoned timber. Therefore, specialists in artificial breeding have been motivated by different objectives, and so have chosen the insect or insects in each case which were most suitable for obtaining specific desired results. It is clear that in the majority of cases the choice was not made at random. Generally, the insect studied was either recently established as a pest or well documented as such. •With these laboratory breeding experiments it is possible on the one hand to draw conclusions about the insects' nutritive requirements, parasitism, ethology etc ; and on the other to obtain enough specimens to try out different phytosanitary treatments with them. Both of these achievements are applicable to effectiye control of the insect problem.

Multiple-funnel traps baited with (j)-a-pinene (released at about 2 g/d at 25–28-C) were attractive to the following Cerambycidae: Acanthocinus nodosus, A. obsoletus, Arhopalus rusticus nubilus, Asemum striatum, Monochamus titillator, Prionus pocularis, Xylotrechus integer, and X. sagittatus sagittatus. Buprestis lineata (Buprestidae), Alaus myops (Elateridae), and Hylobius pales and Pachylobius picivorus (Curculionidae) were also attracted to traps baited with (j)-a-pinene. In many locations, ethanol synergized attraction of the cerambycids Acanthocinus nodosus, A. obsoletus, Arhopalus r. nubilus, Monochamus titillator, and Xylotrechus s. sagittatus (but not Asemum striatum, Prionus pocularis,orXylotrechus integer)to traps baited with (j)-a-pinene. Similarly, attraction of Alaus myops, Hylobius pales, and Pachylobius picivorus (but not Buprestis lineata) to traps baited with (j)-a- pinene was synergized by ethanol. These results provide support for the use of traps baited with ethanol and (j)-a-pinene to detect and monitor common large wood- boring beetles from the southeastern region of the USA at ports-of-entry in other countries, as well as forested areas in the USA. Un dispositif d'échantillonnage a été déployé dans 4 blocs expérimentaux du 5 juin au 22 août 2007 et a permis de capturer 26 906 coléoptères regroupant 407 taxons de coléoptères répartis au sein de 52 familles distinctes. Les résultats montrent que la CPRS et la CPPTM modifient davantage la structure et la composition des communautés de coléoptères retrouvées dans l'aire d'étude que les coupes de jardinage. L'ouverture du milieu de même que les débris ligneux au sol et sur pied semblent des facteurs déterminants dans l'établissement de plusieurs espèces saproxyliques et non- saproxyliques. Entomol. 35(4): 950Ð957 (2006) ABSTRACT We used pitfall traps to study the effects of Þre and salvage logging on distribution of carabid beetles over a forest disturbance gradient ranging from salvaged (naturally burned and subsequently harvested) to unsalvaged (naturally burned and left standing). SigniÞcantly more carabids were caught in the salvaged forest and the overall catch decreased steadily through the edge and into the unsalvaged forest. We also noted a strong negative correlation between carabid abun- dance and percent vegetation cover. Beetle diversity as measured through rarefaction was signiÞcantly greater at the edge relative to both the unsalvaged and salvaged forest. This stand level study suggests that the amount of edge habitat created by salvage logging has signiÞcant implications for recovery of epigaeic beetle assemblages in burned forests by inßating the abundance of “open habitat” species in the initial communities. Carabid beetle responses to salvage logging can differ from responses to harvesting in unburned boreal forest suggesting that management of postÞre forests requires special consideration.   • Entomologists of Saskatchewan Second Edition
    ENTOMOLOGISTS OF SASKATCHEWAN SECOND EDITION Meghan Vankosky, Martin Erlandson, and Cedric Gillott, editors 2019 Foreword and Acknowledgements In 2017, Owen Olfert gave me a copy of Entomologists of Saskatchewan. Being new to the entomology community in Saskatchewan at the time, I read it with interest and especially enjoyed seeing pictures of my new colleagues from almost 30 years earlier. Paul W. Riegert did an amazing job capturing the history of entomological expertise in Saskatchewan in the 1990 edition of Entomologists of Saskatchewan. Seeing value in historical records and knowledge, I suggested that the book be updated at the December 2017 meeting of the Entomological Society of Saskatchewan (ESS). I also ended up inadvertently volunteering myself for the task, with the generous assistance of Martin Erlandson and Cedric Gillott. The process of updating a nearly 30 year-old document of this nature was challenging. Entomologists have retired and moved away from Saskatchewan, and in one case, retired and moved TO Saskatchewan. Entomologists included in the 1990 edition have sadly passed away or have slipped out of touch. Although there has been a loss of entomological expertise in Saskatchewan, there has also been renewal in the form of newly graduated students, newly identified professionals and amateurs, and in the immigration of new professional entomologists. Renewal of this nature is indicative of the ongoing importance of entomological knowledge, basic and applied. Some of the new entomologists are studying bee taxonomy and biology at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, aquatic entomology at the Water Security Agency, and agricultural entomology at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
