Boris' roadmap has given plenty of encouragement that we will soon be getting our lives back to some form of normality. The vaccine data from Israel is very encouraging and it now very much feels as if it's more a question of when our lives will return to normal rather than if they will. Mystery Angel and Silent Queen are two fillies who should give their owners plenty of excitement over the next couple of months and both ran great races this week under new retained rider Kevin Stott. Mystery Angel was having the run to put her spot on for Saint Cloud after having a racecourse gallop at Southwell last week. Kevin rode Mystery Angel at Southwell and it was fair to say that he was disappointed in her work. That put a slight doubt in our minds ahead of Wolverhampton but it was great to see Mystery Angel quickly remove those doubts and after finishing an unlucky second, Kevin, George, myself and the owners can now all start to dream of Group success in 2021. Mystery Angel's target is the Group 1, Saint Alary in May and she will head to Saint Cloud on March 11th where I think she will be very hard to beat in the Listed Rose de Mai. Silent Queen was drawn in the car park and then missed the break at Chelmsford, but Kevin kept his cool and rode her very well delivering her on the outside of the field to win with plenty in hand. We could see Silent Queen running at Listed level at the weekend and she will be aimed at the 3yo race at the All Weather Championships Final day at Lingfield. Share sales are strong and we now only have 10% remaining in two 2yos. Both of them are going well at their respective yards. The Olympic Glory is one of the nicest fillies I bought at the sales and Richard is happy with her progress to date. The Decorated Knight is held in high regard at Roger Fell's so if anyone is thinking of purchasing one of the remaining shares then I wouldn't put them off these two horses. I have moved to add to our string with the Cotai Glory filly bought who joined Karl Burke and I will be adding potentially two more 2yos to the string this week. Look out on the website for more details. On the farm we now have seven foals on the ground, as is usually the case the fillies are outnumbering the colts and at the moment it is 5 to 2. What is more important is that all the foalings have been straightforward and looking at the stock we have, they are definitely above average as a group. We already have 15 of the 18 mares on the farm covered who weren't due to foal in 2021. This is ahead of where we were this time last year. We scanned the first two mares on Saturday 15 days after they were covered and I was delighted to see that both of them were scanned in foal. Next Stop Saint-Cloud for Mystery Angel Mystery Angel ran a great race on Friday night at Wolverhampton. Kevin Stott got after her out of the gates but Mystery Angel wasn't quick enough to get to the lead and then unfortunately Joshua Bryan slowed the pace right down from the front which was the opposite to what we wanted pre race. Going down the farside the two horses who wanted a stamina test were in the rear and the two quicker horses had the prominent positions. Kevin kept Mystery Angel up to her work and when she was green or outpaced he stoked her along to retain his track position. Turning in, the leader quickened from the front and we lost a length on the leader as we were caught for a turn of speed. Kevin stuck at Mystery Angel and as he did the winner was on his outside which restricted his racing room. Mystery Angel only really got going inside the final furlong and took off but had nowhere to go due to horses being on her outside. She was promoted to 2nd as a result of the stewards enquiry and we now head to Saint-Cloud for the Listed Rose de Mai full of confidence. Silent Queen Explodes at Chelmsford Silent Queen burst through the field on Saturday night to win her second race of 2021. Silent Queen behaved in the stalls on Saturday night unlike some points this season. She missed the break and Kevin very quickly dropped employed Plan B and dropped her in at the rail. We discussed beforehand that a lot of the winners had come up the middle recently as pointed out to me by Hugh Taylor and Kevin switched her to the outside going around the bend. Silent Queen took off in the straight and won the race very easily. We will look to enter her in the Listed race at Lingfield next Saturday over 7 furlongs for 3yos only and if it is weak and she comes out of the race well she will take her chance. There are also handicap options at Lingfield on 10th March and Wolverhampton on 13th March if we swerve the Listed race. There can't be many 3yos ready to run next weekend so it could be a very weak race for her. Four More Foals at Glebe Farm The fourth foal of the foaling season was a filly by Inns Of Court out of the Lope de Vega mare Overheard. She has already bred a winner in the form of Dandys Derriere who is rated 79 who lost by just 2 lengths to the highly touted New Mandate in August at Sandown. The next foal was a filly out of Ninja Lady who comes down the famous Meon Valley line of Reprocolor and Colorspin. Her sire Cotai Glory will be having his first runners this Summer in 2021. The latest filly to be born is by Acclaim who like Cotai Glory will be having their first 2yos run in the coming weeks. Our fillies mum Peach Melba is by Theatrical a winner of the Breeders Cup Turf all the way back in 1987. Sunday night saw our second colt born by first season sire Land Force out of the mare Climene. Climene is by Frankel and was bought in France before coming over to Glebe Farm six years ago. As you can see the foal is slightly back at the knee, over the next week he will strengthen and that will rectify itself. Help Nick with his Mating Decisions To try something new in the latest newsletter. Nick has asked if anyone would be interested in submitting their very best ideas for mating one of his own mares. The best submission will be in with a chance of Nick listening to them and choosing to mate Bristol Fasion with your selection. Email any of your homework to: [email protected] and [email protected] Selecting a Stallion for a mare is very much an inexact science and it's a case of trying your best, and hoping for the best when it comes to selecting a stallion. There are many factors to consider which are listed below: Physical Make up of the Mare and the Stallion Successful Crosses (Nicks) Avoiding In breeding At what point the mare/progeny will be sold. Attached below is Bristol Fashion's page when Nick bought her back in 2012. For updated progeny you can visit her Racing Post page via: Bristol Fashion Bristol Fashion was one of two mares we bought for Glebe Farm way back in 2012. She is now a 12 year old mare and is carrying a foal by Calyx with a due date in Mid April. Bristol Fashion is a daughter of Dansili. She was unraced probably due to her size as she stands at around 16'3. Like many mares she toes in on her near fore. She has had five foals to date. Voyager Blue was a very good looking son of Footstepsinthesand who sold for 92,000 at the foal sales. He was a big yearling who was a very good horse for Jamie Osborne before being sold to Hong Kong for a large undisclosed amount. Her second foal was Cribbs Causeway (Rip Van Winkle) who was Group and Listed placed achieving a rating of 97. Megans Approach (Dawn Approach) had soundness issues and was ultimately slow. Her filly by The Gurkha died in a paddock accident as a foal. Her most recent foal, a son of Kodiac made 85,000 Guineas at the Foal Sales. He was a very good mover, had plenty of bone and was very well liked at the sales. So the question is, who should she be covered by in 2021? At the moment, Nick is still undecided, she didn't make the list to get into Seathestars or Lope de Vega. Stallions like Galileo and Dubawi are beyond her. All suggestions should consider the stallion fees attached to them and take into account that the progeny would be sold at the foal sales.
