“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!” ― Hunter S. Thompson

“Wow! What a Ride!” I couldn’t have said it better myself. My year as President has been a rollercoaster of people, places, and emotions; but, I wouldn’t trade it for anything! To everyone who has supported me on this e-ticket ride, “THANK YOU!”

Although the year will be drawing to a close when you read this, I write it with Thanksgiving looming just a week away – a huge reminder that there are thousands of Aggies and friends who deserve my thanks, now and always. I had so many things that I wanted to accomplish when I took on this role. Some worked out, others didn’t, but I can honestly say that I’m skidding in broadside, thoroughly used up and worn out, but loudly proclaiming this to be the best year it could have been, all thanks to the Aggies I’ve worked with, met, and have yet to meet in person.

Thanks to for making football entertaining again and reminding me why I love the game. I’ve had the privilege of watching the two greatest quarterbacks of all time live at . Bucky Richardson ’92 taught me to love the game and Johnny Football brought me back to it (along with second deck, 45 yard line seats). But it is Mike Evans who took my lucky number to new heights and made Johnny look good. Thanks Mike! I can’t wait to watch y’all next year, wherever that turns out to be.

Thanks to Bowen Loftin ’71 for being the best mentor a president could ask for and representing everything great about the Aggies. Bowen, I am honored to have served with you. Your friendship means the world to me and I look forward to visiting Columbia next time we play the Tigers. The University of Missouri system is lucky to have you, my friend.

Thanks to all the Aggies who gave their time this year to ensure that the Houston Aggies stayed connected. I don’t think most people realize how many Directors, Officers, and Chairs it takes to put on the events and activities the HAMC hosts throughout the year, not to mention the Club, Howdy Club, and Aggie Moms. Y’all are my rocks, the firm foundation on which the Houston Aggies stand and prosper.

Finally, thanks to Adriana Dean, who helped transform this Newsletter into what it is today. And thanks to the Aggies who have reached out to me to share their stories and photos. You are the true heart of the Houston Aggies. Please continue to send your stories to me. I love sharing them with each and every one of you.

So as my presidential journey draws to an end, I invite you to stay connected to me as I start a new adventure. You can find me planning events at the Sam Houston Race Park, where live horse racing returns in January. If anyone is interested in fun and unique meeting and event space, please be sure to give me a call. I’d love to share the excitement with you. I can’t wait to see what 2014 brings.

Thanks and gig ‘em! deborah lawson ‘92

45011_.indd 9 12/17/13 9:51 AM Spirit of an Aggie Entrepreneur

What would you do if you had access to a machine, woodworking, or metal work shop? An electronics lab with advanced 3D design software and a 3D printer? With access to the tools, equipment, space, and training, anything you can image could be possible. The Inventor’s Mill brings the ultimate tool shop to the Houston area.

Phil Birkelbach ’93 grew up in a small West Texas town, working as a ma- chinist in the machine shop that his Grandfather started after the war. After graduating from high school, Phil attended Texas A&M, where he met, and later married, Shannon ’94. (You may remember Shannon from a story Spirit of an Aggie Entrepreneur in the Second Quarter 2012 HoustonAggie.) For the In his free time, Phil flies. He’s been a pilot most of last eighteen years, Phil has been working as an engineer for a small company his life, soloing a glider when he was just 14. In 2005, that builds control systems for the offshore oil and gas industry. he finished building his own airplane and has really enjoyed flying it. “I love to build things, which is why I went to engineering school. Lately, I miss having access to the tools that I Fellow Students: had growing up in that machine shop. I have more ideas than I have time, A Collection of Aggie Poetry but I want to build bigger and more interesting inventions.” To reach that Glenn Phillips ’01 has spent a long time in Aggieland, with a lot of time to think about what it goal, Phil started a small business: means to be an Aggie. When he found that meaning difficult to explain, he wondered if poetry The Inventor’s Mill, which will allow would make it easier. Seven years and 120 pages of poetry later, he has his answer. “It is still member to use tools and equipment hard to explain, but poetry helped me document my experience as part of the Aggie family,” that may not have been possible be- fore. For more information about this As he prepares to receive his fourth degree this May, Glenn collected his poems into a book as a Aggie start-up: please visit farewell to Texas A&M. All profits from the sale of the poems will fund an Aggie Ring www.inventorsmill.com. Scholarship named in honor of his cousin, Jeff Wetuski ’91, who passed away while still a student.

A&M has made me the person I am today. This book, the poems, and the scholarship it will endow are just a small thank you. The book is separated into four sections: Campus, Traditions, Classroom, and My Experience. The poems are not meant to be universal, but I hope they help Aggies reconnect to their own experiences in Aggieland.

Fellow Students: A Collection of Aggie Poetry is available online at www.aggiepoetry.com, in bookstores around Aggieland, and from Glenn directly at [email protected].

45011_.indd 10 12/17/13 9:51 AM HAMC Builds Bridge from College Station Students to Houston Non-Profit

Several years ago, the College of Engineering decided to establish a multi-year, multi-discipline, real-life project-type program that would allow students, freshmen through seniors, to gain real-world experience. As with so many things, ideas were exchanged, but actual plans were slow to materialize. Until now. . . In August, members of the Houston A&M Club were asked to identify Houston-area non-profits interested in being a part of the program. Our long-time partner Elves & More was an obvious choice. Elves & More is a non-profit organization that helps at-risk children living in the greater Houston area by partnering with schools and teachers. Elves & More rewards, with bicycles, the children that achieve their personal educational goals, which can be related to behavior in class, attendance, reading level, academic performance, etc.

Executive Director Rebecca Roberts was thrilled to be asked to participate. Despite the success of a previous project with Industrial Engineering students, more help was needed. So after some discussion, a cross functional/cross college/cross discipline program was envisioned that included engineering/computer science, business, and education components.

The challenge, in the first phase of the project, was to develop a way for teachers to set goals for the students, have the parents approve the “goal contract,” allow the teachers to update all parties on each child’s progress, and if the child reaches the goal, have Elves & More provide a bicycle at Christmas time. To that end, the College of Engineering assembled a team of students, freshmen to juniors, to build an online database to allow teachers to enter their students’ grades, parents to check their students’ progress during the semester, and Elves & More to get instantaneous updates on which students will be eligible to receive a bike.

This phase was documented in posters that were presented to a group of engineers who evaluated the functional definition of this database. From the posters, the students will develop a report to be passed on to the next group of students who will start to map out the key requirements of the database and establish the relational requirement for the date elements.

Stayed tuned for the next phase . . . 99 Bottles of Beer…Aggie Volunteers at iFest On Sunday, 28 April 2013, 36 volunteers from the Houston A&M Club took control of three beverage booths at the 43rd Annual Houston International Festival. This year, iFest took guests to Brazil’s Carnaval, featuring a music and culture perhaps best highlighted by samba-dance demonstrations, colorful parades, and capoeira exhibitions. Throughout it all, Aggie Volunteers served this thirsty crowd, keeping them on their feet and dancing to the rhythms from the Bud Light World Stage.

By 1987, what began as a simple salute to the arts in 1971, had grown into the “Houston International Festival,” celebrating Houston’s role as an international city, highlighting its ethnic diversity, and better educating Houston youth in the arts and cultures of other countries. Each year, iFest spotlights the arts and cultures of an individual country or region of the world, assisted by participating governments at the highest levels possible. The Aggie Volunteers are proud to be a vital part of this Houston tradition.

A HUGE thank you to all of the volunteers who came out and helped us! You made our 15th year of volunteering a HUGE success! We hope to see everyone again next year!

45011_.indd 11 12/17/13 9:51 AM An Aggie Abroad: Ubud, Bali

One of the many advantages of living in SE Asia is being able to hop on a plane and take a short flight for a weekend trip to one of the many islands near Singapore. We happened to travel to Ubud, Bali, Indonesia on the weekend of the Royal cremation ceremony of Tjokorda Istri Sri Tjandrawati.

Tjokorda is the late wife of Tjokorda Gde Putra Sukawati, head of Ubud’s royal family. This weekend of celebration brought the Balinese people together to show their respect for the Puri Agung Ubud royal family and celebrate the purification and release of Tjokorda’s spirit so that she may reincarnate.

The Queen was carried by 300 Balinese men in a 25 meter high tower from the town square to the cemetery. Thousands of Balinese locals and visitors watched as Tjkorda’s body was lowered from the man-made tower to a bull-shaped sarcophagus and cremated. My husband and I were honored to be in the presence of such a beautiful ceremony. The cheers, dancing and music of the Balinese people celebrated the life of Tjokorda. This was an experience of a lifetime.

The following day we visited the Holy Spring Water Temple of Bali. It being the autumn Hindu festi- val, Diwali, we witnessed a mass number of Hindus enter the water temple to rid themselves of all the bad influences in their bodies and purify their mind and soul. Hindus believe that the springs at this temple eliminate all kind of disease and give the people new holy spirits. Families and individuals filled the parking lot, ate their meals and then merrily made their way to the Holy Spring.

I wanted to jump in the spring for the firsthand experience, but chose to remain a spectator as we walked to see the worship at the temple. Women and men must wear sarongs to enter the temple, and visitors are not allowed entrance when worship is taking place, but we were able to watch from outside the gate. Diwali is a time for celebration and victory of light over darkness and we definitely joined in the celebration. I had wanted to visit Bali since the movie “Eat Pray Love” was released in 2010. We consid- ered it as a honeymoon destination but never went. Then finally! We booked the flight to celebrate our second anniversary. We visited the Monkey Forest Sanctuary where a scene was shot for the movie. We also visited the rice fields and walked down (and up!) 300+ steps to see the Gunung Kawi temple royal tombs.

Bali is a place we’ll have to visit again. What a trip and cultural experience! AMAZING!

45011_.indd 13 12/17/13 9:52 AM Put a Bit of Aggieland in Your Next Event

There is not a single thing I do not miss about Bryan/College Station, and I spent two years after moving away thinking about and researching the possible ways I could get my husband and me back to B/CS! I might hail from Spring, TX, but B/CS truly is what feels like home to me, which is likely what I miss most about the area; the feeling of home.

When I think back to my tenure as a student at Texas A&M, traditions are, of course, unique/special/memorable when it comes to reminiscing. However, even though Ring Dance, for which I served as director, clutches a special place in my heart for contrib- uting to my current career, I still am unable to show partiality to one tradition over another. Thus, the memories that seem most touching revolve around the final weeks of Dr. Robert Gates serving as president at Texas A&M. He arrived on campus with our class (2006), and he left with a significant portion of our class in December of 2006. It was poignant to me to have the opportunity to lead a prayer for him as invocation speaking in our graduation, but being a part of the crowd that met him outside the steps of Rudder Tower on his last day in the office was unique and special. His tearful, “I’ll miss ya forever” was touching and quite memorable! “...B/CS truly is what feels like home to me, which is likely what I miss most about the area; the feeling of home.”

I feel blessed that somehow there seems to not be a separation personally/professionally when I think about what Texas A&M has done for me. Because I truly invested myself in the culture and environment while a student and new graduate, I feel as though the connections I still hold with individuals there are what draws me back, pulls me to stay associated, and excites me about transformations for the University that might otherwise leave me a grumpy newer-Ol’ Ag. As a full-time student assistant at The Association of Former Students for about a year at the end of college combined with starting my career in the Office of Admission and Records, I felt networks grow beyond the enriching connections I made with peers as an undergraduate. Each relationship I developed has transcended beyond a professional network and developed personally as well. Overall, my investment in others while at Texas A&M seems to come back to me in greater ways than I anticipated or thought to imagine; it’s humbling.

Fast forward to today, and I’m the owner/principal of Event Identity, LLC, an event coordination and planning firm based here in Houston. We work in most all events and keep a specialty around weddings which serve as the majority of our business. Without a doubt, my clients are what excites me most about my work and the contribution I give to their events. The joy and happiness that I can provide to them in the coordination/planning of their events is priceless and gives me the adrenaline I need to continue on the following week with planning the other events on our company’s calendar. I thrive on the ability to make each event unique to each client. “my clients are what excites me most about my work...”

As a business owner who works diligently Tuesday-Saturday, I make it a point to reserve Sundays solely for my husband and family (our precious dog, Ember). After a morning at church, I’m excited to spend the afternoon and evening doing what my husband prefers or occasionally requesting him to join me in a shopping trip, perhaps! On weekends without an event to coordinate, our social calendar is usually full in some manner whether with our church small group, friends, or family activities. There’s never a dull moment!

page 8 | www.HoustonAgs.org

Over the next 5 years, I hope that my husband, Henry ’05, and I will have welcomed a child into our family (maybe two), and I’m open to whatever changes come otherwise whether that be a move or something similar. Even better, it’d be great to be season ticket holders yearly (Aggie football, of course)! Professionally, I hope to be guiding other event planners in our firm in a flourishing and well-respected business. I greatly look forward to the opportunity to work with those future employees to make a diversified and exciting place to work each day.

45011_.indd 15 12/17/13 9:52 AM Farewell Address from President Loftin To the Aggie Family,

When I announced, in July of this year, my resignation from the presidency of Texas A&M University, I noted that my love for students is and has been my primary motivation. At that time a return to the faculty and to teaching and research seemed the logical path for me. Since that announcement I have devoted a great deal of thought to how best to continue doing what I love— serving students. Recently, a unique and exciting opportunity came my way, an opportunity to continue affecting the lives and futures of thousands of students, not just a few dozen enrolled in the classes I would teach or working in the laboratories where I would do research. While it is very difficult to imagine ourselves anywhere else but Aggieland, Karin and I have found a new home with many of the attributes of Texas A&M. Today the University of Missouri System is announcing that I will become the 22nd Chancellor of its flagship campus in Columbia, Missouri. “...a piece of me will always be here, and my love for this university’s students will not lessen.” As a Fightin’ Texas Aggie, a piece of me will always be here, and my love for this university’s students will not lessen. We look forward to maintaining the friendships we have forged here while we develop new ones in the State of Missouri. I will be leading the oldest public university west of the Mississippi, a land-grant institution that shares much with Texas A&M—a rich history, membership in the Association of American Universities and the , an outstanding faculty and staff, and a passionate student body and alumni. We wish only the best for Texas A&M and for its students, former students, faculty and staff.

Freddie Wong ’69 recently received the K-12 STEM Literacy Committee Educator-Engineer Partnership Award from IEEE-USA, which presents awards and recognitions to recognize excellence, outstanding service and contributions in furtherance of its objectives. After his retirement, Freddie helped the IEEE Houston Section start a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) teacher in-service program utilizing www.tryengineering.org lesson plans. The Houston Section was the first in the nation that earned a state approval (Texas Education Agency) to grant professional development hours for teachers who attend the workshops. Freddie, along with Sam Williams ’68, has also been instrumental in launching the Caring Aggies Mentoring Program (CAMP) to provide long term mentoring for disadvantaged children in the Houston area. After launching with 35 students in 2006, the program has grown to 300 students and involving more than 150 volunteers.
