What a Ride!” ― Hunter S. Thompson “Wow! What a Ride!” I couldn’t have said it better myself. My year as President has been a rollercoaster of people, places, and emotions; but, I wouldn’t trade it for anything! To everyone who has supported me on this e-ticket ride, “THANK YOU!” Although the year will be drawing to a close when you read this, I write it with Thanksgiving looming just a week away – a huge reminder that there are thousands of Aggies and friends who deserve my thanks, now and always. I had so many things that I wanted to accomplish when I took on this role. Some worked out, others didn’t, but I can honestly say that I’m skidding in broadside, thoroughly used up and worn out, but loudly proclaiming this to be the best year it could have been, all thanks to the Aggies I’ve worked with, met, and have yet to meet in person. Thanks to Johnny Manziel for making football entertaining again and reminding me why I love the game. I’ve had the privilege of watching the two greatest quarterbacks of all time live at Kyle Field. Bucky Richardson ’92 taught me to love the game and Johnny Football brought me back to it (along with second deck, 45 yard line seats). But it is Mike Evans who took my lucky number to new heights and made Johnny look good. Thanks Mike! I can’t wait to watch y’all next year, wherever that turns out to be. Thanks to Bowen Loftin ’71 for being the best mentor a president could ask for and representing everything great about the Aggies. Bowen, I am honored to have served with you. Your friendship means the world to me and I look forward to visiting Columbia next time we play the Tigers. The University of Missouri system is lucky to have you, my friend. Thanks to all the Aggies who gave their time this year to ensure that the Houston Aggies stayed connected. I don’t think most people realize how many Directors, Officers, and Chairs it takes to put on the events and activities the HAMC hosts throughout the year, not to mention the Reveille Club, Howdy Club, and Aggie Moms. Y’all are my rocks, the firm foundation on which the Houston Aggies stand and prosper. Finally, thanks to Adriana Dean, who helped transform this Newsletter into what it is today. And thanks to the Aggies who have reached out to me to share their stories and photos. You are the true heart of the Houston Aggies. Please continue to send your stories to me. I love sharing them with each and every one of you. So as my presidential journey draws to an end, I invite you to stay connected to me as I start a new adventure. You can find me planning events at the Sam Houston Race Park, where live horse racing returns in January. If anyone is interested in fun and unique meeting and event space, please be sure to give me a call. I’d love to share the excitement with you. I can’t wait to see what 2014 brings. An electronics lab with advanced 3D design software and a 3D printer? With access to the tools, equipment, space, and training, anything you can image could be possible. The Inventor’s Mill brings the ultimate tool shop to the Houston area. Phil Birkelbach ’93 grew up in a small West Texas town, working as a ma- chinist in the machine shop that his Grandfather started after the war. After graduating from high school, Phil attended Texas A&M, where he met, and later married, Shannon ’94. (You may remember Shannon from a story Spirit of an Aggie Entrepreneur in the Second Quarter 2012 HoustonAggie.) For the In his free time, Phil flies. He’s been a pilot most of last eighteen years, Phil has been working as an engineer for a small company his life, soloing a glider when he was just 14. In 2005, that builds control systems for the offshore oil and gas industry. he finished building his own airplane and has really enjoyed flying it. “I love to build things, which is why I went to engineering school. Lately, I miss having access to the tools that I Fellow Students: had growing up in that machine shop. I have more ideas than I have time, A Collection of Aggie Poetry but I want to build bigger and more interesting inventions.” To reach that Glenn Phillips ’01 has spent a long time in Aggieland, with a lot of time to think about what it goal, Phil started a small business: means to be an Aggie. When he found that meaning difficult to explain, he wondered if poetry The Inventor’s Mill, which will allow would make it easier. Seven years and 120 pages of poetry later, he has his answer. “It is still member to use tools and equipment hard to explain, but poetry helped me document my experience as part of the Aggie family,” that may not have been possible be- fore.
