ALL MONTH Virtual Thematic Tours: John Jay & Alexander Hamilton John Jay and Alexander Hamilton were the two

most influential New Yorkers in the early republic. To celebrate the anniversary of the first of the Federalist articles, now known collectively as , being published on

September 27, 1787, check out our thematic tour that explores the relationship between these two men and how their ideas helped shape the country.

Self-Guided Historic Landscape Tours John Jay began to inherit his land near Bedford, in 1785, three years after his father died. He began developing the land as an income-producing farm in 1787, strictly as an investment at first. He developed it further in the late 1790s, to become his home in retirement. His descendants lived into the 1950s, and as you walk around the property, you will see many features developed by the different generations of the Jay family. Self-guided historic landscape tour booklets are available for download from our website and at the Carriage Barn Education & Visitor Center. The grounds of John Jay Homestead are open daily from sunrise to sunset. Free admission.

Living with Pollinators: Biodiversity and Artistic Practice in the Hudson Valley with Lisa Sanditz, Paula Hayes, and Fox Farm Apiary September 15, 5:30-6:30pm

Presented by Thomas Cole National Historic Site and The Olana Partnership at Olana State Historic Site Join artists Paula Hayes, Lisa Sanditz, and beekeeper Chris Layman from Fox Farm Apiary for a virtual conversation centering around art, ecology, and environmental stewardship. Work by Hudson Valley-based artists Paula Hayes and Lisa Sanditz are included in “Cross Pollination: Heade, Cole, Church, and Our Contemporary Moment”, on view at the Thomas Cole National Historic Site and Olana State Historic Site. Hayes and Sanditz both explore human interactions with and within the natural world. Hayes sculpts and forms living artworks, including hand-blown glass terrariums that require regular care and examine the implications of growing and maintaining large and small-scale ecosystems. Lisa Sanditz’s work and new artists’ map created with Emily Sartor, “Thrilling Tales and Startling Adventures – An Unofficial Guide to Pollinators of the Hudson Valley,” illuminates the importance of our local pollinators and their habitats, while flagging human impact on biodiversity. The artists will be joined by beekeeper Chris Layman of Fox Farm Apiary, a honeybee rescue and sanctuary in the Hudson Valley that also maintains an apiary at Olana’s farm complex. This webinar will explore the timely artistic and ecological connections between art, environmental stewardship, and our role in local habitats. The panel will be co-moderated by Amanda Malmstrom, Assistant Curator at Thomas Cole National Historic Site, and Carolyn Keogh, Director of Education and Public Programs at The Olana Partnership. Virtual Young at HeART: Memoir as Sight and Sound Tuesdays, September 21 - November 9, 2021, 6:30 Just as acclaimed 19th-century artist Martin Johnson Heade captured visual and aural stimuli on canvas, so are the senses essential to the craft of memoir. In this six-week course, participants will each craft a memoir essay of 1,500 words and will consider such essential topics as: the narrative arc, describing a setting, creating a reliable narrator, and writing dialogue. The course will reference Cross Pollination: Heade, Cole, Church, and Our Contemporary Moment, which highlights Martin Johnson Heade’s 19th century painting series of hummingbird and habitats. By exploring the artist’s commitment to the vivid representation of the natural world, participants will be encouraged to explore a similar pursuit in their own writing.

Emily Sachar is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and the author of the memoir, Shut Up and Let the Lady Teach (Poseidon Press/Simon & Schuster), which chronicled the author’s year teaching public school in one of the most challenging urban districts. Ms. Sachar has also written travel memoir for Newsday, the Long Island newspaper, and Cowboys & Indians, a West Coast lifestyle magazine. Her 15 years’ experience as a reporter at Newsday earned her more than 25 writing awards, including two as the prestigious grand prize winner of the Education Writers of America. MELISSA MILLER

Office Manager

Taconic State Park

A seasonal summer job turns into a career…

I was born in Catskill NY and went to kindergarten there. After my sister was born, we moved to Copake NY, where I was raised. I spent a lot of my childhood at the Copake Fire House. My father was a volunteer fire fighter in the Copake Fire Department, along with the fathers of most of my friends and cousins. The fire house was the center of our family’s social activities.

What led you to your career in parks? My uncle Amon worked at Rudd Pond as a maintenance worker. He told me the park was hiring for summer jobs. I still remember my interview with the park manager Tom Scofield. I worked for seven summer seasons at Rudd Pond as a booth attendant and carpooling with my uncle most days. When Rudd Pond closed for the season, Tom Scofield kept me on into the fall and winter seasons at Copake Falls doing winter trail maintenance, sign painting, inside cabin painting, and then eventually into the spring, doing maintenance to get the park ready for opening season!

What do you do here at Taconic State Park? My name tag says Office Manager, so, I manage the office staff with scheduling, greeting patrons, checking in campers and as the Park’s Mission Statement reads; I thrive “ to provide safe and enjoyable recreational and interpretive opportunities for all New York State residents and visitors and to be responsible stewards of our valuable natural, historic and cultural resources.” And like many staff, we do a little of everything in the park. I have been known to take on some Ranger duties and maintenance tasks where needed. Behind the scenes I take care of much of the financial business, purchasing, and bill processing for the park.

What experiences have you had that are unusual or unique? Meeting Governor George Pataki when he landed in a helicopter at Copake Falls, then went by motorcade to Rudd Pond, where the staff was awaiting his arrival. Back in 90s, Mariah Carey filmed her music video for “Dreamlover” at Bash Bish Falls.

Why do you love the line of work you are in? I get to meet so many people. I enjoy seeing the returning visitors to the park year after year and some who I have formed lasting friendships with over the years. And also the people I work with who I call my “park family.” Speaking of family, the park is such an amazing place to work, that besides my uncle & cousins that worked here, my mother Cindy worked in the nature center, my sister Jennifer worked in the booth and has now returned 20 years later, to work part-time cleaning cabins! My father Deryll worked for almost 20 years at the park doing maintenance and running the weed harvester.

Here I am, 29 years and counting, in a park with inspiring views and quiet places to meditate. I am fortunate for having three great bosses, Tom Scofield, Ray Doherty, and now Chris Rickard and loving my 7-mile commute! In baseball terms, I’ve spent my entire parks career with the same “team” or “franchise,” if you will, all these years and I received a 25 years of dedicated service award a few years ago. Good times and so many memories I hold in my heart. I tell everyone, the park is hiring! You never know how far it will take you. UPCOMING FUNDRAISERS // SEPT. - OCT. 2021
